DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Language is the most significant part of communication. It sharpens people’s thoughts, guides and control people’s entire activity (Bolinger, 1968). In the case of mother tongue, the child learns it easily, due to favorable environment and by the great amount of exposure to the language. However, learning a second language requires conscious effort to learn it (James, 1996). According to Tatham and Morton (2006), many report that they can understand the second language but they cannot speak it. Consequently, English languages become an essential demand for all levels and fields. One of the dilemmas of the senior high school students are reporting in English language, same situation is happening in Dalubhasaan ng Lunsod ng San Pablo Integrated School a school located in the Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City. English is considered as a universal language, which is spoken by millions of people all over the world. It is a universal language because it is the second of the largest native language and simplest and easiest natural languages in the world. (www.omniglot.com). 1 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER According to Idrus and Salleh (2008), effective communication is about being clear, fluent and to the point, which can catch the attention of the audience even in groups or one-to-one situation. The researchers observed that some students in Dalubhasaan ng Lunsod ng San Pablo Integrated School (DLSP IS) Students . Most of the times, the students are more affected when it comes in oral reporting. Especially, to those people that are not using English as their native language. (www.omniglot.com) Nowadays, many students are not sure if they will be able to pursue a Degree in college. According to Souriyavongsa (2013), main causes of low of English language learning of the students are: students of English foundation background and students lack of confidence to use English. Thus, this study is conducted to determine the problems encountered in English oral reporting of the selected Senior High School students of the Dalubhasaan ng Lunsod ng San Pablo Integrated School. Also, to help students improve their reporting skills 2 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. Future Researchers- The study may be a basis for the future researchers with a similar topic or related 6 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER Theoretical Framework Second Language Acquisition The Monitor Model “Stephen Krashen’s is one of the influential model and well known theories of second language acquisition” Gitsaki (1998). The Krashens Monitor Theory is an example of a macro theory to cover the factors that involved in second language acquisition: the age, the personality traits, the classroom instruction, the environmental influences, input, etc., but not without limitations. Mc Laughin acknowledge Krashens theory to develop an extensive detailed theory. For the investigation of Krashen’s theory the grammaticality judgements, he said that it is based on “feel” and “rule” for subconscious and conscious acquisition respectively. Krashen’s Monitory Theory of second language acquisition had a great impact on the way second language learning was viewed and, initiated research towards the discovery of orders of acquisition. 7 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER REVIEW OF LITERATURE FOREIGN According to Hendra Heriansyah (2012), there are difficulties causes of speaking problems in English of students of Syiah Kuala University. The problems faced by the students was lack of vocabulary, while the prime cause of problem is “being afraid of making mistakes” which hampered them to speak. Nor Hans Misbah et. al.(2013), they stated that the lack of English of vocabulary, influence of the first language learning and socioeconomic status of the family are the major themes that contribute the difficulties in English language learning of the students. As stated by Ahmed Gaibani & Fadil Elmenfi (2014) they concluded that gender has positive relationship with the public speaking anxiety among the study, however, no significant impact of gender on public speaking anxiety is found. This implies that being male or female has not constituted to student having anxiety in speaking. 8 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER REVIEW OF STUDIES FOREIGN Souriyavongsa(2013), stated that the main causes of low of English language learning of the students are, students of English foundation background, students lack of confidence to use English because they are afraid of mistakes and shy feeling. Moreover, students find difficult to learn English language because they are not well motivated, encouraged, and gained learning strategy. Thus, students do not practice speaking English with English native speakers. According to Baldwin (2011), he states that speaking in front of many people is one of the common phobias that students encounter and feeling of shyness makes their mind or that they will forget what to say. In addition to, Saurik (2011), identifies that most of English students feel shy when they speak the English language because they think they will make mistakes when they talk. Moreover, Ayu Rita & Nadhia Dalila (2008) in their study on anxiety and speaking, English as a second language among male and female Business studies students in University Industry, Selangor; an attempt to identify the potential sources and causes of anxiety as related to the students’ affective needs and their needs in higher institutions of learning posed a research question that asked if gender differences have an impact towards the level of anxiety of students. 9 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER The results showed that female students experienced more anxiety than male students while speaking in class. Female students were more anxious than male students when expected to speak in English language, which is a foreign language to them; both genders experienced nervousness and panic when asked to speak publicly without being pre-informed and both never felt sure of themselves when asked to speak in class. Female students exercise lower self-confidence because of their interest in the friends who might be judging them, and male students are found to be experiencing less anxiety when it comes to volunteering answers in class. Furthermore, based on the study of Sanda Kumari Chandran et. al.(2012), insufficient preparation, fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, fear of audience and lack of confidence in language skills are the causes of anxiety in oral presentations. There are more numbers of female students who are most sensible with their grades. It is important that the educators must be aware of these schoolrooms interactions to provide help. In addition, according to Rasheedha and Nishanti(2017), they stated that students used English more frequent only inside the class and less frequent outside the class. Students do not have enough time to practice English at home. Environment was the main outstanding cause for the problems in English. 10 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER REVIEW OF LITERATURE LOCAL Leonardo Opetina and Marian Laxa (2008), stated that students have low chance to speak English in places other than school. Some of the students were shy to express their thoughts and they also limit themselves from asking and communicating with other in their class with the use of English language. Also, as stated by Barcelon (2015) Filipinos have difficulties in speaking grammatically correct English. Most of the problem in English is grammar because of changes in the ending of the words. In addition, they have problems in preposition and auxiliary verb. Clearly, this is one of the problem that may affect their speaking skill. However, According to Claro (2012) he states that learning English starts in school. But English language will not only be the common medium of exchange among people but will be the language practically used in some fields. Also, according to Sta.Ana (2013) The environment designed to speak no other foreign language but Filipino and other local dialects. Many people are too shy to speak English because of the culture of making fun for others who are trying to learn and speak English. Incapacity results to decreased self-confidence. 11 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER This proves that environment like learning atmosphere is one of the factor in speaking English. REVIEW OF STUDIES LOCAL Abao (2013), stated that effective communication is considered the bedrock towards globalization. English communication is made as the medium of instruction in the Philippines. But upon observation some stated universities and colleges in the country like Cebu Normal University Integrated Laboratory School. Observation noted that they still lack the proficiency of the language. In addition, according to Carissa C. Cabaysa & Lourdes R. Baetiong (2010), Leaners encounter difficulties in expressing the ideas during interaction especially when they are lack of knowledge to the target language. Their study also noticed that most of the students were used gap-filling devices. Their study shows that these problems have a significant effect in Reporting in English. They suggest that students could further improve their speaking abilities if they would gain knowledge. Moreover, according to the findings Dela Peña et. al. (2004), the study conducted in Senior Students of San Pablo City National High School. 12 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER The result of their study shows that problems encountered has a significant effect in reporting in English. They identified the problems are environment factors, individual factors such as afraid to commit mistakes and fear of embarrassment. Definition of terms Reporting – to make a report, to make or give an account of, especially formally, this is way or reporting in front. ESL- “English as a second language” the teaching of English to the people who speak different language or native language. L2- also known as second language in the country speaker lives in. Acquisition – something or someone acquired or gained; the act of acquiring 13 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER CHAPTER 2 METHODOLOGY Research Design The researchers used descriptive method on this study. Descriptive method is a method use to discover facts on which professional judgement could be based (Rivera and Rivera 2007) with a quantitative – qualitative approach. A quantitative approach involves the collection of numerical data in order to explain predict or control phenomena of interest and data analysis is mainly statistical. The qualitative approach utilizes triangulation, which involved the collection of intensives narrative data to gain insights into phenomena of interest. The researchers conducted the study at Dalubhasaan ng Lunsod ng San Pablo- Integrated School and the researcher chose the selected Senior high school students as their respondent. 14 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER Sampling Technique The researchers employed a Random sampling technique to get the number of respondents. The population consists of 29 males and 21 females of selected senior high school Dalubhasaan ng Lunsod ng San Pablo Integrated School S.Y. 2018 – 2019. Research Instrument The researchers employed an adapted and modified questionnaire from the study conducted by Dela Peña et. al (2003) to ensure faster gathering of data. To test validity and reliability of the research instrument, the researchers sought the help of their research Teacher and Adviser before administering it to the respondents. The questionnaire used in this study is composed of two parts. The first part consists of the following information: respondent’s profile- age and gender. On the other hand, the second part consists of fifteen (15) questions that relates to reporting in English. 15 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER The Researchers used Likert Scales, according to Saul Mcleod (2008) it is quite popular because they are one of the most reliable ways to measure opinions, perceptions, and behaviors. This scales are great for digging down deep into one specific topic to find out (in greater detail) what people think about it. The researchers used the frequency Always, Often, Seldom and Never in the instrument design. Data Gathering Procedure After the research teacher approved and validated the instruments and tools, the researchers wrote a letter of permission to Ms. Lilian B. Dela Cruz, Principal of DLSP- Integrated School. After seeking the approval of the Principal for the request, the researchers informed the respondents of what they were going to do. Then, the researchers informed the respondents, the researchers took charged in distributing and gave a right amount of time to answer the questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire were secured for documentary analysis in order to come up with valuable, reliable, and valid information in accordance to the variables used in the study. 16 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. San Jose, San Pablo City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER Statistical Treatment of Data The researchers used Sample Mean and Standard Deviation as their Statistical Treatment, which was also used to analyze and interpret the data to determine the problems encountered and the significant effect in reporting in English. ∑𝑛𝑖=1 𝑋𝑖 𝑥̅ = 𝑛 ∑(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2 𝑆𝐷 = 𝑛 17 DALUBHASAAN NG LUNSOD NG SAN PABLO INTEGRATED SCHOOL Brgy. According to Henna Paaki(2013),student experienced difficulties in speaking in English such as embarrassment, fear of making errors, problems with oral production, pronunciation and accent. The study reveals that they “often” ask assistance in reporting. According to Baldwin (2011), he states that speaking in front of many people is the one of the common phobias that students encounter and feeling of shyness makes their mind go blank or that they will forget what to say.
