Name: _______________________________________________________________ Date: _____________ Measuring Mass: Triple Beam Balance Activity Directions: In this activity, you will have to find the mass of 5 objects. Some of the objects will be easy to mass and others will be more of a challenge. After you find the mass of all the objects, you will then have to read sample measurements and write their masses. How to measure mass using a Triple-Beam balance 1. With nothing on the pan, move the sliders ALL the way to the left. 2. The two white lines should line up. If not, calibrate. 3. Place the object on the pan. 4. Starting with the 100g mass, slide it in the notches until the indicator drops below the white line. 5. Move the mass back 1 notch. This is your hundreds number. 6. Repeat with the 10g and 1g masses. 7. Add the numbers together. 8. ***OPTIONAL*** If you needed to use a container, subtract the mass of the container ***If the mass object is less than 100g or 10g, the indicator line will fall at the first notch. Replace it to the left and move on to the next mass*** Activity 1: As a whole class, write the mass of the two objects. ONLY MASS THE OBJECT, not container! Also convert the measurement in grams (g) to kilograms (kg) by dividing by 1000. Object Number Object 1 20 mL of Water 2 Large Highlighter Mass (g) Mass (kg) Activity 2- Find the mass of the following: Object 40 mL of water (use 50 mL beaker) Your Shoe Your Pen/Pencil Mass (g) Mass (kg) Directions: Write the measurement indicated on the balances next to grams (g).
