Going to the filed away from the class was not just important as a necessity but also important towards exposing my personality and training me while preparing me to the work expected in the outside world after college. This attachment report aims at giving the feedback to my awesome school, Accra Technical University. The report aims at addressing the importance of field attachment to the life of a student according to my personal view, the structure and organization of my place of attachment, my experience at the place of attachment, knowledge and skills obtained at the site of attachment as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the site of attachment. The report will also acknowledge the very important people that made my industrial attachment and submission of this report successful. Declaration I ZEGAH ERNEST ELIKPLIM, hereby declare that this report is the result of my own original piece of research work conducted by the supervision of MR. FELIX MANIGAR of the IT department at St. Dominic’s Hospital. In instances where other works have been cited, full acknowledgement has been given I dedicate this report to God Almighty who guided and protected me through my going and coming during the attachment. And to my parents who taught me the immense value of taking decisions and acting only on the basis of accurate information and sound knowledge. I also dedicate this report to the staff and entire personnel of the St. Dominic’s Hospital, Akwatia for their most essential role played in my acquisition of both practical and theoretical knowledge. I am grateful for the St. Dominic Hospital fraternity. I also thank my family for the great support it gave me towards making this dream come true. I had all I needed from them and am very grateful. Above everything am so grateful to the Most High God who did not only enable me get the best opportunity but also assigned to me the best people I have ever worked with. All glory belongs to Him for every success I saw during my field and industrial attachment period. INTRODUCTION Long before attending an industrial attachment, I never knew how important it was to the life of any serious student especially from Accra Technical University until I faced it myself as a university requirement. Industrial attachment forms part of the institution’s curriculum and it is seen as an integral part, where the students need to use their initiative to translate theories learnt in classrooms and perform assignments in an actual working environment; instill in the students the right kind of work attitudes and professionalism through interaction with people in the organizations, and observation of their future roles in industry. It also makes the students more effective and productive to their respective organizations much sooner is usual for fresh graduates. Students are required to participate and work as industrial trainees in their chosen disciplines. 6|Page Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND I used to take it a waste of time especially when it coincides with my holiday. Attending this one was not just an academic eye opener in terms of grades but also a great exposure to the outside world. First of all the opportunity given to each student by school to go out there and find places for attachment by themselves has a great impact towards improving the confidence of students and creating a network with others outside the school. I was among those who were successful in finding a place for attachment through the help of friends. I successfully secured a place in St. Dominic Hospital in Akwatia, Eastern region. This attachment period is usually a maximum of one month and, during which the students are expected to acquire additional practical experience to supplement, their course of study in the University. They are also exposed to the real world of work and its challenges which will prepare them towards their future careers. This report is the outcome of the one month practical training I undertook at St. Dominic’s Hospital. It is said to be a supervised program since supervisors from the institution visit the students within the period of the program to ascertain the success of the program and the amount of seriousness students attached to it. learn to nurture ethical and interpersonal skills for a successful career development and to meet new ke the transition from school to methods which are not taught in the school institutions and to make access to products equipment not normally available in th -enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in institutional activities and in the entire educational process -life practices and implementation of theoretical lessons and principles. 7|Page Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ST. DOMINIC’SHOSPITAL St. Dominic’s Hospital is located at Akwatia in the eastern region of Ghana.it is among the social Advocacy organization industry and it’s registered under NCHS. In 1960, The Local Authorities from Akwatia approached the Bishop of Accra with request that the Catholic Mission should take over the newly built Clinic in Akwatia. The Chief of Akwatia then was Barima Kofi Bempong II. Bishop Bowers, the then Bishop of the Accra Diocese, in turn asked the Superior General of the Dominican Sisters, Rev. Sr. Fabiola Quack for help which was generously granted. The four Dominican Sisters who made the initial trip to Akwatia were Sr. Victricia Koch, Sr. Theresita Ohmer, Sr. Irmina Radke and Sr. Fatima Schmitt. They were all qualified nurses. The pioneering Sisters were joined by Dr. Karl Hoheneck, an experienced Surgeon from the St. Mirren Hospital in Germany in June, 1960. The work started in the Clinic under quite primitive circumstances. The main building consisted of four rooms, two large ones with a bed capacity of eight each and two small ones with two beds each. The clinic thus started with 20 beds in 1960. There were no trained nurses to help apart from the Dominican Sisters. The Clinic lacked basic amenities like fresh water supply and electricity as well as accommodation for the Doctor and other staff. The Honorable Chief of Akwatia, Barima Kofi Bempong II heartily welcomed the contribution of the first Sisters and generously contributed 5000.00 pounds sterling for a Doctor’s bungalow and the construction and furnishing of the Operation rooms. Surgeries at the clinic were referred to the theatre of the Cast Hospital (GCD Hospital). The first surgery in the hospital was an ectopic emergency that would not have survived the referral to the Cast Hospital. The surgery was eventually done on a stretcher in the uncompleted theatre. Subsequent operations were all done in the St. Dominic theatre after the first successful operation. The theatre was completed in 1962. The Sisters will normally resume OPD duties after the emergency surgeries. The pioneering Sisters at the start of their Missionary work lived in a convent which was a local council school block at the St. Roses Senior High School. The block is currently a Dormitory for the St. Roses School. By this time every Sister had to be able to stand in for the other if the need arose. Meanwhile in 1962, the sisters moved to the newly built convent in the Hospital. Sr. Fidelia Niessner and Sr. Miguela Keller arrived in 1963 and started work as Nurse-Midwives. The organization improved after the arrival of these two Sisters. Sr. Theresita Ohmer took charge of OPD finances and business, Sr. Fatima was in charge of Children’s ward, while Sr. Lucaris took care of Male ward. Sr, Irmina worked at OPD and at the Operating 8|Page Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND Theatre. Sr. Fidelia and Sr. Miguela took charge of both the Maternity and Female wards and took turns in night duties. More hands were needed and Ghanaian Nurses and Midwives had to be employed. However, after the termination of the Enrolled Nurses’ Training course in Ghana, she joined the Battor Community. Mrs. Sarah Nyampong took over as the first Ghanaian Tutor in 1977 until the termination of the program in 1984. St. Dominic Hospital has been serving the Denkyembuor District and its environs with care and compassion since 1960. I was taken through safety orientation and other rules and regulations about the Hospital. I was also briefed on the routine work undertaken and the level of work attained as far as the punctuality and time-consciousness was concerned. I was also introduced to the various sections in the Administrative department and their functions. The IT department is responsible for the repair and maintenance for computers, terminating of Ethernet cables, network configuration, and panel installation, switch installation, IP configuration, software update, tools and equipment need for the server to communicate to the computers. It is also DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WORKDONE AT THE IT DEPARTMENT SAFETY AT THE WORKSHOP All subjects tend to use their own terminology and health and safety is no exception. The principles which were laid down in the Dockyard and the regulations that follow control our working environment. They make our workplace safer, Safety is not merely the absence of accident but the result of all persons taking positive actions to identify accident causes and taking preventive measures. Some of the safety here first aid is available in the workshop. 13 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND THE WORK DONE BY THE STUDENTS AT IT DEPARTMENT. BASIC COMPUTER EXAMINATION I and my colleagues did a basic examination on the knowledge we have about the computer. The examination was very helpful because most of the question were about things I knew nothing about and because my colleagues and I had a little knowledge our supervisors taught us the questions we got wrong and explained them for easy understanding. NETWORK CONFIGURATION, RACK AND PANEL INSTALLATION Rack Installation Panel Installation Network Configuration DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM During the internship I was introduced to networking and database management system. I was given the opportunity to download and install MySQL on my laptop. MySQL as a working platform was used to create a database management system. Relational Database model using MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access software to create a database which I emphasized on MySQL. In MySQL, using the primary key as a unique identifier and foreign key as the reference the primary key in a different table. 14 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND 15 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND MAINTENANCE ON COMPUTERS Maintenance is done to clean a computer to help it work properly. This is about cleaning the keyboard, mouse, monitor, system unit, speakers, etc. There was a care and maintenance exercise assigned to my colleagues and I by blowing dust from all computer peripherals in facility by removing and cleaning the computer’s hard disk drive and Random Access Memory (RAM) with spirit and assembling it back. The maintenance that I did was cleaning of the RAM and Motherboard of the System Unit. During the attachment I got to know that Eraser was the perfect tool to be used in cleaning the RAM and also the Spirit was the perfect liquid to be used in cleaning the Motherboard. TERMINATING AN ETHERNET CABLE Terminating of network cables was also another skill I acquired during my internship at St. Dominic Hospital. 16 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND When terminating a cable one needs an RJ45PIN, Ethernet Cable, Crimping tool and Wire Stripper or Cutter. STEPS: 1). Use the Wire Stripper to remove the sheathing on the wire. 2). Separate the twisted pair with your hand. 3). Arrange the wires in sequence (Orange White, Orange, Green White, Blue, Green, Brown White, and Brown). 4). Trim excess wire with Crimping Tool. 5). Insert the wires into the RJ45PIN (connector) maintaining that specific color sequence. 6). Insert the Connector into the top middle slot of the crimping tool and clip it. CLEANING ID CARD PRINTERS WITH THE CLEANING CARD During the internship period, I was assigned to clean the ID card printer in the OPD records department of the hospital together with my colleagues and also attending to a printer with paper stacked in it. Replacing the dye film and cleaning spool in the ID card printer. RUNNING HAMS SOFTWARE ON THE FACILITY COMPUTERS 17 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND During the period of internship, I was assigned to the following departments (Administration, Accounts office, Consulting rooms, Records, Financial Controllers office, Screening rooms, Main Pharmacy room, Procurement office, Dressing room/ injection room and Biostatistics) to visit every morning and check for any faulty issues with the computers and also run HAMs software on these computers. INTRODUCTION TO HTML AND CSS At the hospital for internship training, I was introduced to HTML using Visual Studio Code as the working platform. During this period, I was thought how to rename a tag under web development, listing items using ordered list and unordered list, introducing navigations using the anchor tag example <a href=”mailto:ernestzegah@gmail.com”>Mail</a> in a web page, making a text bold and italic, underlining text, giving borders to a text, introducing headings, inserting a horizontal line, creating a table, creating a container using the <div> tag, adding background styles and adding images in a web page. Styling a webpage using CSS. DATE AND TIME SETTING OF FINGERPRINT ATTENDANCE MACHINE Also I was given the privilege to manipulate the fingerprint attendance machine of the institution by setting up the time and date on it in other to ensure accurate attendance keeping of the staffs of the company. CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED 1. Lack of proper timetable for interns to follow. NEW KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED The purpose for this training is to acquire knowledge and also get hands-on experience on the practical part of Information Technology. Knowledge acquired includes; 1. I learnt the configuration of network 2. I learnt what to do before repairing faulty computer. 3. I learnt the methods of Panel installation. 18 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND 4. I have improved on doing clean installation. 5. I also learnt how to test if an Ethernet cable is working perfectly. 6. I have learnt to be time conscious and law abiding. 7. I learnt how to configure IP address 8. I learnt how to manipulate the date and time setting of fingerprint attendance machine. CONTRIBUTIONS OF STUDENT 1. I involve and avail myself in every activity of repairing faulty gadgets brought to the Department. 2. I shared my knowledge with the interns sometimes when the staff seems very busy. 3. I was always punctual to serve as an example for my colleagues to follow. 4. I also took part in network configuration and switch and panel installation. 5. I also helped maintain a sanitary environment at the Department. 6. I also avail myself in our daily routine work. GENERAL COMMENTS Generally, I would like to say St. Dominic’s Hospital is a good training center for student who would like to undergo industrial training in the health sector. This is because they have better and competent staff and I T expects who instructs or teach the best I T practically. OBSERVATIONS I observed that everyone is equally respected irrespective of the rank or position. Every department works responsibly in achieving a common aim and also observed that some of the staffs were not comfortable sharing their washroom with the interns due to the outbreak of the covid-19. IMPRESSIONS 19 | P a g e Attachment Report by: Zegah Ernest Elikplim - 01200130D Computer Science I Accra Technical University HND I was very happy to undertake my industrial training at St. Dominic’s Hospital (IT DEPARTMENT) Akwatia, E/R. It is an organization with group of people who were ever ready to receive and work with students all over the country and all walks of life. I was much impressed with the cordial relationship I had with everyone and I was encouraged more to work. I will describe the organization as a higher esteemed one, well organized and a better place for student to attach themselves. RECOMMENDATIONS I hereby recommend the following based on my observations; The number of personnel at the St. Dominic’s Hospital (IT DEPARTMENTS) should be increased to enable them provide effective service to other departments as a whole since they play a very important role in the effectiveness and the efficiency of the hospitals management system. I also recommend that the students should be allowed to do their internships at St. Dominic’s Hospital since it will help improve upon the standard of discipline in the institution. This program should be sustained and well organized since there is much to be learnt in the ever growing IT field. CONCLUSION In conclusion, one can say this semester industrial attachment has given me the needed skills and experience. And also, it has improved my feeble work ethics. Moreover, I can boldly say that I was able to achieve my aim for this program and has also enlightened me practically in my field of work. REFERENCES 1. MR. JOHN M.
