Invasion Games Prof. Wellington De Luna What are Invasion Games? "Invasion games or sports" are team games in which the purpose is to invade the opponent’s territory while scoring points and keeping the opposing team's points to a minimum, and all within a defined time period. EXAMPLES OF INVASION GAMES • Wheelchair Handball Basketball Netball Lacrosse Cycle polo Shinty Roller hockey Ice hockey American football Soccer Rugby Team handball Korkball Tchouk-ball Ultimate frisbee Waterpolo Stick-ball Field hockey 5-a-side football Gaelic football Australian football Hurling/Camogie Speedball Touchball (Finnish rugby) WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT? DEFENSE VS OFFENSE 01 OFFENSE OFFENSIVE STRATEGIES 01 Moving into an open space to pass to receive an object, spacing so your teammates have someone to pass to. 02 Give and go where you pass to a teammate and then run ahead in hope of receiving another pass 03 Keeping head up to find other players and look for options. 02 DEFENSE DEFENSIVE STRATEGIES 01 Zone Defense- Defending a space or an area and anyone who comes into that area 02 Man to Man Defence- When you are assigned to defend and follow the movement of a single player on the opposing team. SHARKS & WHALES Transferable Skills The following list compiled by Griffin & Butler (2005) outline examples of transferable skills that are common among most, if not all invasion games Griffin & Butler (2005) 03 TRANSITIONS Transition is a term used in an invasion games for when the ball changes possession. It is an important concept for both offensive and defensive strategies, and it is also important to transition quickly- when transitioning from defense to offense, your team may have the advantage of attacking before the other team can set up their defense. When transitioning from offense to defense, your team can set up your defense quickly and prevent the other team from scoring. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? STRATEGY VS TACTIC In short, strategic planning is used to set destination and how you are going to get there, and tactical planning outlines the specific actions you are going to take along the way. Strategy defines your long-term goals and how you’re planning to achieve them. In other words, your strategy gives you the path you need toward achieving your team’s mission. Tactics are much more concrete and are often oriented toward smaller steps and a shorter time frame along the way. They involve best practices, specific plans, resources, etc. They’re also called “initiatives.” The Electric Fence Exit Ticket 2.
