TKaM Final Project - (In class completion) Assignment: Choose one project to show your understanding of theme and character development in To Kill a Mockingbird. If you choose a partner project, your partner must be in your English class--no groups of three or more. You may also work independently. All responses will be typed and submitted through Turnitin to check for plagiarism. Choice 1: Partner or independent Choice 2: Partner or independent Diary entry series Character Growth Timeline Write a series of diary entries from Atticus’s perspective showing how Scout or Jem grows over the course of the text in relation to a particular theme (see page 2). Create a timeline showing events in the life of either Scout or Jem. The events should show how the character grows over the course of the text in relation to a particular theme (see page 2). Each diary entry should be dated and discuss specific events from the text related to either Scout or Jem (choose one). All entries must focus on the same theme. The series of entries should work together to show Scout or Jem’s development through the course of the novel related to the theme you choose. Diary entries must span the entire book: beginning, middle, end to effectively show character development. If working with a partner, you must write at least four diary entries. If working alone, you must write at least three diary entries. Each entry must include a direct quote from the text that relates to Scout or Jem’s development. This does NOT have to be something Atticus said; it could be something Scout, Jem, or another character said that was important to Scout or Jem’s development. Your timeline must cover all parts of the novel: beginning, middle, and end. Partner projects: 8 timeline events; independent projects: 5 timeline events Each event must be relevant to one specific theme and how Scout or Jem showed growth related to that theme. Each event should be named, dated (as close to the date as you can get), and given a 2-3 sentence description. At least 3 events must include a direct quote from the text, cited with MLA format, that was important to the character’s development. Timeline should include color illustrations that correspond to places in Maycomb, symbols from the text, events from the text, or other thematically related material. A one-paragraph reflection on the theme and how the character showed growth related to that theme throughout the novel must be submitted. Choice 3: Independent only Essay: Write an essay showing how Scout or Jem grows over the course of the novel in relation to a particular theme (see below). ● Format: 5 paragraphs: ○ One introductory paragraph ○ Three body paragraphs discussing three different stages of the character’s development ○ One conclusion paragraph. ● Body paragraphs will focus on unique examples of experiences or interactions from the text that illustrate the growth of the character. ● Each body paragraph must include a direct quote from the text that relates to Scout or Jem’s development. This could be something Scout, Jem, or another character said that was important to Scout or Jem’s development, or you could directly quote a line or passage that was not speech, including thought, effect of others, action, or look (character description) . ● Body paragraphs should cover the span of the novel: beginning, middle, and end. Theme choices: All projects must trace a character’s development in relationship to ONE particular theme. See the list below. ● Courage ● Innocence ● Growing up ● Justice ● Good vs. Evil ● Prejudices ● Gender roles Direct Quotes ● See list of some important quotes from the novel (view in Canvas) Submission: Anything that is written should be typed in ONE Google Doc and submitted on Canvas (Turnitin). From the Google Doc, things can be printed and pasted or handwritten onto postcards, timelines, etc. TKAM Final Project Title Page Name(s): _____________________________________________________________________ Period: Blue Gold 1 2 3 4 Project Choice: Choice 1: Atticus’s Diary Choice 2: Character Growth Timeline Choice 3: Essay Which theme are you tracking?
