FACULTY OF LAW Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Honours Degree Programme BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FACULTY In 1984, the Lagos State House of Assembly passed Law No. 9 of July 1984 officially establishing Lagos State University as the University of the Lagos State Government. With the founding of the University came the Faculty of Law and Humanities as one of the foundation faculties; the other two were the Faculties of Science and Education. Adopting the National Universities Commission (NUC) Approved Minimum Academic Standards (AMAS), the Faculty commenced with the admission of its first set of students for the 1984/85 academic session for the LL.B programme. The Faculty’s cardinal philosophy and objective is to recognize the unique role of sound legal education “as a stimulus to stir the student into critical analysis and examination of the prevailing social, economic and political system’’. To this effect, the Faculty has witnessed remarkable development both in its standard and status as a foremost institution of learning. In 1989, the Faculty established The Law Centre as a semi-autonomous Consultancy cum training unit of the Faculty. The Centre has organized Conferences and Workshops on topical legal issues and established two-year evening Law Diploma Programme (currently under the School of Part Time Studies of the University). The University Council approved the Institute of Maritime Law in 1995 as a pioneering research and training centre in contribution to the development of the maritime industry in Nigeria. In 1996, the Faculty commenced its general and specialized LL.M programme, which has continued to provide academic and practical training at advanced level to Lawyers and prospective Academics. At present, the Faculty consists of five departments, namely Business Law; Jurisprudence and International Law; Private and Property Law, Public Law and Islamic Law. A Law Library, a rapidly expanding teaching and research infrastructure supports the Faculty with an active faculty membership that has provided acknowledged record of legal scholarship and professional excellence. The Faculty developed its curriculum through a periodic review and addition of new courses as part of its response to current developments in the interaction between legal knowledge and wider social, political and technological development in the society. The Faculty continues to strive to provide legal education to successive students who continue to add to its rich alumni in the professional industry, as well as in government. Philosophy The philosophy of the LL.B programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Laws of the Faculty are clearly articulated “to ensure that the Graduate of Law will have clear understanding of the place and importance of Law in society”. The Faculty recognizes the need for Law students to have a broad knowledge of and exposure to other disciplines in the process of acquiring legal education. Legal Education should, therefore, act first as a stimulus to stir the students into critical analysis and examination of the prevailing social, economic and political systems of their community and, secondly as an intellectual exercise aimed at studying and assessing the operation, efficiency and relevance of various rules of law in the society. 1 Objectives The objectives of the programme are to: 1. embrace various careers, including careers in the Civil Service and the Private Sector, national and international. 2. serve as adviser to governments and their agencies, ministries, companies, business firms, associations, individuals etc. 3. perform judicial and legislative functions, criminal prosecution and civil litigation, arbitration, negotiation and administration of estates, etc. Admission Requirements There are two modes of admission of students into the Faculty of Law.
