As teachers we spend hours trying to plan out the perfect lesson. But all of that planning is pointless if our students are unable to show they understood the content we taught. In order to see if your kids ‘got it’ you must first make sure that your assessment aligns with the standard(s) you taught. In order to be rated proficient in Component 1e a teacher must include in their plans an assessment that “ is aligned with the standards-based learning objectives identified for the unit and/or lesson.” If this is an area in which you feel you need help building capacity in then this is the tool for you. How This Tool Works: First identify the standard you plan to teach. Write your standard down in the first column: What standards will be taught? How will students show they mastered this standard? Differentiation-High (How will you challenge your higher students ?) Differentiation- Intervention (How will you assess those students who need more support?) CCSS RL. 1.1 Ask and answer questions about details in a text Then think how the students will be assessed. What do you want them to be able to do at the end of your teaching cycle? Place that information in the second column like this: What standards will be taught? How will students show they mastered this standard? Students will be able to CCSS RL. 1.1 Ask and answer answer teacher-created questions about details in a questions about the text story The Three LIttle Pigs after repeated readings of the text. Differentiation-High (How will you challenge your higher students ?) Differentiation- Intervention (How will you assess those students who need more support?) You can even use this tool to plan differentiated assessments for your students! What standards will be taught? How will students show they mastered this standard? Differentiation-High (How will you challenge your higher students ?) Differentiation- Intervention (How will you assess those students who need more support?) Students will be able to CCSS RL. 1.1 Ask and answer answer teacher-created questions about details in a questions about the text story The Three LIttle Pigs after repeated readings of the text. These students will use the text The Three Little Pigs to create 4 questions they would like to ask the wolf. They will use the events in the text to develop possible answers to their questions. These students will be asked to draw/orally respond to these prompts: Draw a character from the story Draw one kind of house that the pigs built. Draw the character that blew the house down Takeaways: Using this tool helps teachers to plan out assessments aligned with the standards they plan to teach as well as to plan differentiated assessments for their students. While this tool is best to use while you are planning your lessons it can be used as a reflection tool after a teacher’s plans have been completed for coaches/mentors/teacher teams to assess and evaluate the current assessment alignment occurring in your school.
