(SM&R) CODES. The six-position Source, Maintenance,
and Recoverability Codes are applied by the allowance
preparing activity.

a. SOURCE CODES appear on APL/AELs and will
consist of two digits entered in the first and second positions
of the SM&R code indicating the manner of acquiring
support items for maintenance, repair, or overhaul of items.
Specifically, these codes indicate whether the part is to be
procured on demand and carried in the supply system,
manufactured, obtained from salvage, or assembled with
component parts. They also indicate if the part is not to be
replaced due to the practicality of installation of the next
higher assembly or impracticality of replacement. Failure or
damage of the part indicates a requirement for complete
overhaul or scrapping of the assembly or equipment. (DEN

Support equipment procured and stocked for
initial issue or outfitting to specified maintenance
repair activities. Not subject to automatic
replenishment.
Support Equipment that will not be stocked but
which will be centrally procured on demand.
Item procured and stocked to provide for sustained
support for the life of the equipment. It is applied to
an item peculiar to the equipment, which because
of probable discontinuance or shutdown of
production facilities would prove uneconomical to
reproduce at a later time. (The use of this code will
have limited application in the Navy.)
Item procured and stocked and has been identified
as containing hazardous material. Item requires
recordation in the Hazardous Material Information
System (HMIS) and a Material Safety Data Sheet.
End item and/or support item, terminal or obsolete

procurement. On hand assets may be issued until
exhausted; then use replacement item.
Item is terminal or obsolete with no replacement;
discontinue use.

DEFINITION
Item is not procured or stocked because the
requirements for the item will result in the
replacement of the next higher assembly.
Item is not procured or stocked. If not available
through salvage, requisition, (may result in direction
to procure locally).
Installation drawing, diagram, instruction sheet, field
service drawing, identified by manufacturers' part
number and not stocked in the Supply System.
Support item with low mortality rate, not stocked.
Local purchase or requisition through normal supply
channels using CAGE code and reference number.
Not obtainable from salvage/cannibalization.
b. MAINTENANCE CODES are assigned to indicate
the levels of maintenance authorized to use, remove,
replace or repair end items and support items. They are
entered in the 3rd and 4th positions of the SM&R Code with
the 3rd position indicating the lowest maintenance level
authorized to remove, replace, and use the support item; the
4th position indicates whether the item is to be repaired and
identifies the lowest maintenance level with capability to
perform complete repair. (DENs D013A and D013B)
SM&R Third Position – Use Maintenance Code
CODE
DEFINITION
O (Alpha)
Item removed, replaced, used at the
organizational maintenance level. Its
phases normally consist of inspecting,
servicing, lubricating, adjusting, and
replacing parts, minor assemblies, and
sub-assemblies.

SM&R Third Position - Use Maintenance Code (Con’t)
CODE
DEFINITION
O (Alpha)
To distinguish between the organizational
(con’t)
maintenance capabilities on different
classes of ships the following codes may
be used intra-Navy only. On joint
programs, Navy will receive and transmit
an O to indicate organizational
maintenance level.
CODE

condemnation procedures because of specific
reasons (e.g., precious metal content, high dollar
value critical material). Refer to appropriate
manuals/directives for specific instructions.
D

disposal not authorized below depot maintenance
level.

d. SUPPLEMENTAL
SOURCE
CODES
are
assigned to the Service’s logistics community/operating
forces. Each service uses the code to disseminate specific
instructions that add to that service’s internal logistics
practices. Supplemental Source Codes are entered in the
sixth position of the SM&R Code format as follows:
(DEN

SM&R Sixth Position - Supplemental Source Code
(Con’t)
CODE
DEFINITION
J
Inter-service
DLR
considered
completely
repairable below the depot maintenance level.
P
Item is under a progressive maintenance review.
(Item will be coded O in the fourth position and D
in the fifth position). P (sixth position) will then
indicate intermediate is authorized between O
and D levels. In the unlikely event two different
service option codes apply to the same item the
progressive maintenance code P will take
precedence.
R
Gold Disc repair capability has been developed
at the organizational and/or intermediate
maintenance levels. Repair must be performed
in a certified Module Test and Repair Facility.
T
PD source coded item that has peculiar
application to training devices.
