Digital wellbeing
Digital Wellbeing is about fashioning and sustaining a healthy relationship with
technology. As technology plays a big part in our lives, we find ourselves spending
an increasing amount of time online and on our devices. Our wellbeing is
dependent upon our mental and physical health and thereby our digital wellbeing
is influenced by our online interactions and the amount of time we spend on our
devices. Whilst technology and the internet can simplify and enhance our lives,
they
can also be distracting, be a cause of anxiety, and make us feel upset. Being in
control of technology.
enables us to use its full potential and gain all the benefits of it. This unit will
enable students to explore some of the areas of digital wellbeing from the
standpoint of a prospective computing professional. It will provide the opportunity
for students to investigate digital wellbeing within computing systems and explore
the responsibilities and solutions to the problems presented.
.
pg. 21
Research objective/question
Students are to choose their own research topic for this unit. Strong research projects are those with
clear, well focused and defined objectives. A central skill in selecting a research objective is the ability
to select a suitable and focused research objective. One of the best ways to do this is to put it in the
form of a question. Students should be encouraged by tutors to discuss a variety of topics related to the
theme to generate ideas for a good research objective. The range of topics discussed could cover the
following:
 How to find the balance towards a healthy relationship with devices?
 Are tech companies responsible for the health, safety and wellbeing of users?
 What tools and strategies can a company use to develop a system(s) that addresses digital
wellbeing for users?
 What impact will future digital tech have on human wellbeing?
The Learner requires to produce a research proposal that clearly defines a research question or hypothesis,
supported by a literature review (Use the project proposal and ethical consideration form template
formats)
Project Proposal should cover following areas.
1. Definition of research problem or question. (This can be stated as a research question, objectives or hypothesis)
2. Provide a literature review giving the background and conceptualization of the proposed area of study. (This
would provide existing knowledge and benchmarks by which the data can be judged)
3. Consider and define research methodology and research process. Demonstrate understanding of the pitfalls and
limitations of the methods chosen and ethical issues that might arise.

human activities. Invention of smart devices was limited the desktop and laptop usage, because
of the ease the work and user-friendly also. But every new development has both positive impact
and negative impact. To solve the health-related issues, new development introduced, and named
as Digital Wellbeing. Which offers healthy association with technology and provide the
awareness of online consumption of end-user. It includes different tools which are assist us to
develop and conserve the technological habits in healthy way, according to the impacts of
domains such as education, science, health care, economy, and governance.
The research argues the what is digital wellbeing, relationship between digital devices with
human beings and how they are impact in the day by day of individuals, how can we measure the
benefits and negative impacts of digital consumption, how far the digital wellbeing fixes those
potential harmful of individual’s work and in personnel life without losing data security and
other barriers, like cultural, education level, financial stages, possibilities across the world and
more.

1. Introduction of Wellbeing
Digital wellbeing is referred to provide when the users (human being) interact with digital
devices or simply called technology, ensure the health both physical and mental as a measurable
aspect. It’s fully focused in the health of end-users, like improve the healthy use and guide the
user to make their lifecycle in healthy manner. (Passey, 2021)
They are mainly considering to optimize the health, that including, nowadays in smart mobile,
there are some extraordinary features introduced. Such as, sleeping mode, eye comfort, app
timers, focus in work time. Just a one clicks to allow them and it automatically remember the
work or time. Limiting screen time, if the number or hour passed next day only, we can use the
mobile. And also mute the notification it’s help to work peacefully without any distraction.
Additionally, heart beat tracking, pressure meters, weight gaining/ losing. All of those features
are provided daily, weekly and monthly reports according our options.
Variety of tools are used to increase digital wellbeing, such as website blockers, limit app usage,
and also, we can set timer for each apps in mobiles.
To increase the sense of wellbeing in digital technologies, that offers some ways monitoring the
digital activity, it provides detailed insight of out tech usage. Keep record how much of time we
spend in digital devices. And for each app also. Next point is set the boundaries or limitation of
app and website usage. Once you reach the limit, the app automatically pauses and mute the
notifications. Bed curfew is focus on the sleeping time of end-user, that disconnect the smart
devices to assist them get a better sleep. Silence the notifications and turn the screen to grayscale
that minimize the blue light feature. Another service is gadget free meal time, to relax the time
with lovable one and build high cohesion among them. Focus mode decrease the distraction
while working, that we need to focus on some important tasks. Parental control is assisted us to
keep monitoring the kids who under 18, that restrict the dark unwanted websites, gamming timer,
view their search history, control the YouTube videos and so. Lastly social media, plays the large
part of well-being, that keep connect with people and sharing the thoughts arise from the mind.

1.1.Wellbeing Digital Devices
Nowadays development of digital wellbeing devices is emerging. Such as, wearable fitness
trackers, smart health watches, wearable ECG monitors, wearable Blood Pressure (BP) monitors,
bio sensors, and some applications also available in web, under the category of health and fitness
apps. And according to the Intelligence research 84 million users through 2022 will stay.
In android also provide some features. Such as, mute the distracting apps for focused in the
work, set limit of daily with apps and also for websites, allowing modify the notifications or
snooze the notifications or put on don’t disturb mode, bedtime mode and grayscale, flip to shhh,
that available on pixel 2 and 3 which turn on don’t disturb by flipping mobile face down.
In YouTube also offers profile of time watched, break reminds, single notification per day
feature, control the auto play. Notifications mute hours.
In google assistant, activate the wellbeing services by saying in voice. Example, dim the lights
please, set a bedtime mode at 9pm, put on the notifications silence and more.
Also in Gmail, notifications according to the high priority, auto reply or showing suggestions,
customize the tabs in glance, and save in draft and send later.
In family link features, manage apps of kids, restrict the websites and game in play store or app
store, set the time for bed once the limit is reached next day only, we can access the app or
website, and lock the device.

2. Literature Review
In the first chapter we reviewed about the concerning problems in digital devices in daily life of
individual’s life. Digital technology devices enlarge the limitations of information obtainable to
people and enhance human productivity, that means high amount of efficiency and effectiveness,
but it also suggested risks for people’s wellbeing, like cyber bullying, malicious attacks online
security and privacy. The view is point out the addiction of internet and the problems. according
to the pathological dimension, most of the internet or technologically connected users are
suffering from the health problems, like insomnia, depression and insecure so more both in
workplace and personal life. OFCOM report says 49% of people addicted to the tech for a long
time on daily basis. 37% of them spending time in social media. And also, it seems to be
acknowledged of negative responses of over consumption in digital devices.
To solve the over consumption of digital devices, well-being in digital devices a theoretical tool
used to resolve the all the negative outcomes. The conceptual framework of Organization of
Economic Co-operation and Development wellbeing broken into two categories, quality of life
and material conditions, their modules are respectively, health status, work-life balancing,
education skills, social connections, civic engagement and governance, environmental quality,
personal security, subjective well-being and for next category wealth & income, earning and jobs
and housing. To equalize the harmful effects of digital over consumption wellbeing services
implemented. By the development of wellbeing, they are increased emotions of self-awareness,

2.1.Research Methodology
Mostly, the research is conducted based on the Quantitative and Qualitative techniques. Such as,
web-based surveys, case studies, questionnaires and interview to target group, live testing
prototypes and more. (Tsatsou, 2016). Quantitative methods are close-ended questionnaires and
qualitative method is focus groups, it’s very beneficial research method.
For this research we go with mix-method research methodology. It brings high quality research
into wellbeing using scale of mixed method, and also can relent robust information that is
reliable and valid than single-method approach. It’s needs of increasing diverse society and its
health factor. Appling this method provides creative design and sensitively in the context of
wellbeing. This approach is depending on the interaction, priority, timing, and mixing.
Interaction is fundamental design of encompassing either quantitative component or qualitative
component. And also, it’s fully independent, that contains distinct strands and strands interact at
the conclusion of studying. Priority may be quantitative or qualitative or equal of both
quantitative and qualitative methods’ contribution. Timing is the sequence of strands, they are
quantitative first, qualitative first, and concurrent. Mixing is referred as integration of research
questions and responses. It may be taken place during data collection or during interpretation.
The mixed-method approach offering finer understanding about respectively effective and
affective factors, well-being comparison to usage of either qualitative method or quantitative
method solitary.
pg. 32
2.1.1. Quantitative research methods
Qualitative analysis utilizing the based theory that reveals the effective component which impact
in employee’s well-being in organization. This method is instructed and best approach when we
don’t know the exact output to define the develop an approach to problem. It’s an experience of
study something that can’t be described by numerical format, that are used to understand words,
ideas and experience. Mostly it using non-probability sample methods.
The data collection techniques are, (Relavant Insights, 2021)

the experimental or other data collection methods. They are simply named as probability
methods. Using this data, we can implement the decision tree and find out the possibilities of the
developed system. If any risk or misfortune occur, we can handle that during the risk
management process. Mostly for the researcher’s quantitative analysis methods are used, because
the data in a statistical valid way.

Quantitative hypotheses developed under the basis of qualitative exploration. Data are collected survey
technique from target groups. And for data analysis, Analysis of Moment Structure used. The final
responses are documented as a report that let out the factor which are affect or make impact in health and
well-being of organization or target group.

2.1.4. Project management methodology
Project management methodology association of practical tool regarding the logic, functions,
which determined how to plan best, implement the modules, monitor and control the whole
system along the unbroken process to succeed in the scope and completion.
Traditional approach, modern approach are the two categories of the project management
methodologies. Traditional methodology is consisting of initiation, planning, analysis, designing,
encoding the design into coding, control the project, integrated all components which are
developed, tested and evaluated and finally installation & maintenance.
But for this research paper we go with modern approach which is not follow the linear stages,
that are consuming the time and other resource into wastage. In the modern approach there some
techniques available, such as PMBOK Guide, Prince-2, CPM, Lean, Six Sigma, CCPM, Agile,
Spiral and SCRUM
For this research paper, Agile methodology is producing the best outcomes.

Questions related with data analysis phase.
1. What is the step that we use to identify the threats?
2. What are the negative possibilities available in wellbeing?
3. In that misfortune what are the critical to wellbeing?
4. How can we frequently be tracking the negative possibilities which we observed?
5. What are the tools and techniques available to analyze the data and what is the suitable
technique?
6. How can we implement the technique?
pg. 43
2.2.1. Tools and techniques
Nowadays for data analysis are done by the usage of data analysis tools. They are R is leading
analysis tool which is used for statistical & data modelling that complies in windows, Linux as
well as iOS, Python an object oriented scripting language to analyze the data that similar to
JavaScript, ruby and PHP, Apache spark which is used for large scale of data processing which is
works on static data, Apache storm big data tool applied when data isn’t a constant, Excel very
basic tool use for data analytical , Google Data Studio a google feature allow us to free data
analytics and data visualizing and more. It analyzes different structures of data formats (jigsaw,
2021). Such as big data, Structured/ unstructured data, meta-data, real-time data, machine data
(IoT).
Those all kind of data taken under quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques, which are
used for decision making of digital product development and identify the wellbeing features to
improve from other competitors and also, previous version of product.
For this system, using the excel spreadsheet, tabulated collected data based on the outlined.
Doing the process, check the questionnaire list and record the responses and understanding of
focus group. Additionally, data which is required further clarification also noted. Then
summarizing the data analysis into theme or group and note down preliminary responses. Further
feedbacks are derived in final response.

2.3.Analyze the wellbeing dimensions
Digital wellbeing dimensions, can be categorized according to the characteristics which is make
question who are affected by the development and how can we measure them. 1st phase of in this
approach is effect down analysis, in this online harassment and cyber bullying, subjective
wellbeing, self-transcendence, physical and mental health and more.
Subjective wellbeing defined as the cognitive and effective measurements of individuals in their
life. It takes place under the survey method to identify by asking their fulfill and negative impact
of the digital consumption. It may be eye problems, insomnia and more.
2nd one is intervention effectiveness directionality, that concerned with decrease the negative
impact, and increasing the digital wellbeing. According to the surveys mass amount of
respondents highlighted that digital wellbeing neutralized the benefits and also cost of digital
device usage. To reduce the harm, limiting time tools, promote safety, handling the time and
child protection.
3rd and final dimension are reveling who is affected? As unit of social analysis foreground on
wellbeing of individuals, self-development and self-control and also emphasized the necessitate
for online communications to allowing people to shape sensible disclosure.
pg. 45
2.4.Research measurement
According to the new developed wellbeing features tested by the target participant with their
agreement, and ask to choose concept of digital wellbeing need of interference. This may allow
us to make a decision about the stages or effects of tech. (Luciano Floridi, 2020)In the domain of
social identifying the themes by semi-systematic method.
Based on the theory of self-determination, the corresponding research survey measuring which
the designers & developers can utilize the wellbeing which is influenced in subjective wellbeing.
For an example office productivity tool is most suitable for analyzing the influence of wellbeing
in digital devices. And another service is meditation applications offering the healthy lifecycle,
that reports according to the measures of data gathered by the survey or usability of the apps for
build a healthy life sphere in better way.
Another provocation is positive in one domain may be negative for wellbeing in another region.
So, digital wellbeing approach would have equalized both benefits and harm each other
pg. 46
2.5.Future Development and Limitations
There are two limitations can arise, one the research paper written in English, which means
ethical issues reviewed offer limited of views and other limitation is the digital wellbeing devices
development may differ from country and region under the usage of artificial intelligence and
adopting this developmental feature by un-developed countries, and their cultural barriers.
To fix the limitations, educate the un-developed countries and promote their new inventions
using wellbeing devices that keep their culture clean and proper manner without losing. And
assure that the data security, with deployment of CIA which consists of confidentiality, integrity
and availability.

2.6.Conclusion
In the development of wellbeing resolve the challenges and opportunities under the concept of
healthy life of end-users through reporting. The strategic vision of the system is improving or
building the healthy lifecycle both mental and physical health and maintain them in sustainable.
The basic scope and functionalities of wellbeing are contemplated, that is clear the vague points
about the understanding of wellbeing, their cultural and before the wellbeing and after
deployment of wellbeing. How they meet the aims and objectives in effective and efficient
manner which are fulfill the end-users’ need. In the next part landing research about the system
development that includes define the scope, time span, budgeting, resource allocations, risk
management and finally quality of system. To complete those needs using brainstorming to get
aim and break into objective and also milestones that are deliver as well as documents also
modules. Like Proposal, SRS, System design, prototype. In the research part discuss what are the
methodologies are used, for this system what are methodology appropriate. Next about the
researching techniques may be quantitative or qualitative or both. And also risk analysis are
done. wellbeing, is a new emerging technology which is rapidly changing the world.
