1. Why do you think people know very little about Africa?
People around the world are not clueless about Africa. They know this land most by how the people here
look like and the place that is filled with the unique wildlife. If we are going to trace back the history about Africa, it
will reflect and answer the question why people know very little about it, and it is because Africa is the last
continent to feel the Western Civilization. Since it took a long time before they finally reached of technology and
modern influences, of course it affects the source and amount of information people can have from them. If we are
going to observe today’s culture, one of the most influential came from the America, Russia and Asia because of the
media. The amount of media exposure determines the level of information gathered by the rest of the world. Since
Africa are not technologically advance, we don’t know much about it unless we go there to visit, or others does and
feature them in documentaries.
2. Why are Africans looked down upon?
Africans are looked down by many people, it is because of their status and nationality. Due to their state
where they lack of technology, their wealth and color are also what other people use in their scale of judgment.
Also, due to racism and discrimination, people looked down Africans in various reasons. Like for instance, during
1960s, in America there was a white supremacy, so there were ideas that regulates the ownership of Black people.
They made them slaves, they raped and kill black people. This issue in African people still informs global economy,
in which former colonies are indebted to their colonizers and African states remain trapped in an extractive
economic structure. There can be no doubt that race was a key factor in the colonial exploitation of the African
continent and the resultant legacies of colonialism and the slave trade.
3. What is the contribution of animals to the overall appeal and beauty of Africa?
We know that one thing we can really admire about Africa are animals living there. They conserve wildlife,
so it means there are also ensuring that future generations can enjoy our natural world and the incredible species
that live within it. At the national parks, you can see wild animals in their natural habitats without risk of being harmed
Having animals contribute in the overall appeal and beauty of Africa since this thing add and preserve more beauty
and color, and it keeps the country more natural on its own. Aside from that, animals add to have a rich culture,
diversity in Africa or difference in traditional customs and beliefs, because base on their religion, animals are sacred
and are offered to gods and ancestors.
4. What musical instruments/s is/are used and what is usually the main purpose of the music.
The instruments used in Africa range in size and complexity from hand-held objects to large, elaborate
devices constructed of many parts and, even today, they are mostly crafted from natural materials using age-old
methods. Some examples are the most widely spread and played instruments are the drum, the xylophone, the mbira,
rattles and shakers. Musical instruments are very important to them. Those are not are only used for making music,
but also in communicating to both man and spirit, where they translate and emit daily experiences and events.
5. How Westerners regarded African art in recent years?
Since the continent was o the home of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, we can say that their arts are
associated with treasured culture and beliefs and religion. Due to the beauty of Primitive African art, this has been
copied and imitated by Western nations. Since there were seeking alternatives before to realistic representation,
Western artists admired African sculpture for its abstract conceptual approach and aesthetic preferences to the
human form. Western increased their interest among artists and their patrons gradually brought African art to
prominence in the Western art world. That is why the legacy of early Western taste, with its emphasis on sculptural
forms such as masks and figures, continues to inform most museum collections of African art.

Answer the following questions about the short story “Anticipation”
1. Describe the setting.
The story took place in Nkwabi, the capital of Akwasin, the state park of the village and in the house of Nana
Adaku II.
2. What atmosphere is created by this setting?
It creates an atmosphere of having a celebration, and there are lot of people enjoying the company.
3. What African customs and traits are revealed in this story?


They practice the polygamy, where African men can marry women as many as they want.
African men must give a marriage dowry to the woman they want to marry.
4. Compare the African ways of celebrating with those Filipinos?
Africans and Filipinos have similarities when it comes to celebrating occasions. Hospitality in most African
countries is very similar to the Philippines. They would invite you to eat and share their meal, and they will
welcome you in their homes that is why also in celebrations, people are welcome. Both Africa and Filipino
consider the attire to be we wear depending on the occasion and celebrate with plenty of foods, both also love
to sing and dance and are natural performers. accompanied with music and dancing.
5. Characterize Nana Adaku II.
Nana Adaku is a man who practiced polygamy because he had has forty wives. He is aggressive when it comes
to the things or people he wanted to have. Like when he saw the dancer, he also wants to get what he desires
immediately no matter what it takes. Since he is rich, he also thinks that he can get everything and please
everybody through money.
6. Comment on what the author says about the attitudes of men toward women andvice versa.
The attitude of men toward women is that men have the power and authority to choose whoever they like. Men
have the responsibility towards his family and they are get easily attracted with the physical appearance of a
woman. On the other hand, women are weaker than men, and do not that after with the looks of a man but
instead, they are looking for men with wealth.
7. Did you expect the story to end the way it did? Why?
I did not expect the ending of the story because its unusual. If we love someone and get married to them, two
years are not enough to forget how they all started, unless you have an illness to forget everything in a short
period of time. I also expected that Nana Adaku II will get angry and hurt his wife for telling that they were
married before.
8. Explain the title of the story.
The title of the story simply describes the manner of anticipating or predicting. “Anticipation” in the side of the
author wants the readers to set expectations in the events happened to the story, and the story itself where the
protagonist, the Omanhene of Akwasin, Nana Adaku II decided to marry again a woman whom he thought he
just saw her for the first time.
