64-QAM Uplink
Feature Number: FAJ 121 4363
License Number: CXC 401 1946
Feature Status: L16A (new)
Background/Problem
Description
› Before LTE release 12, the highest uplink modulation is 16
QAM. This limits the user peak rate for users who
experience excellent link quality.
› The introduction of 64 QAM in uplink allows users with
excellent link quality to take advantage of the channel
condition to achieve higher uplink throughput.

Feature overview
› Support of 64 QAM modulation in the uplink for
Category 5 UEs defined in Release 8 and onwards,
as well as UL-Category 5 and 13
Feature Presentation 64-QAM Uplink | Ericsson Internal | 4/1570-300/FCP 131 4742 Uen, Rev PA8 | 2015-06-15 | Page 4
Benefits and gains
› Allows uplink peak rates of up to 70 Mbps for 64 QAM
capable UEs in FDD 20 MHz bandwidth
› Increases uplink throughput for 64 QAM capable UEs
in good coverage areas
Feature Presentation 64-QAM Uplink | Ericsson Internal | 4/1570-300/FCP 131 4742 Uen, Rev PA8 | 2015-06-15 | Page 5
Feature description
› The feature enables higher uplink data throughput for
UEs with Category 5, UL Category 5 and UL Category
13 capability as defined in 3GPP TS 36.306 v12.4.0.
› A power offset to pZeroNominalPusch is used in order
to achieve a higher target SINR which is required for
selecting the most efficient MCS
› The feature supports FDD and TDD
› The feature is optional and under license control.

› Enable/disable the UL 64 QAM feature on cell level.
› Only relevant if the license for UL 64-QAM is present and the feature is active.
› Default enabled.
– EUtranCellFDD/EUtranCellTDD::puschPwrOffset64Qam
› Power offset to the target received PUSCH Power Spectral Density (PSD) for 64QAM-capable UEs. This is used to control the received SINR target.
› It is used to enable maximum throughput for 64QAM, which in some configurations
is not possible otherwise.

network impact
analysis
› In good Radio conditions, UL Throughput will be higher
when UL 64QAM is enabled and a 64QAM capable UE is
scheduled.
› UE throughput will be improved for applicable UEs.
› Average cell throughput increase is expected.
› 64QAM capable UEs will generate more interference within the
cell and towards neighboring cells. The throughput of UEs
without 64QAM capability will be impacted.
