Finding the main idea:
Assignment 1:
Look at these details from a paragraph about fairs
People can win different kinds of prizes at fairs.
Fairs often have many rides to go on.
Many fairs have delicious treats to buy
Choose the main idea that ties all the details together
a. Fairs have fun things for people to do.
b. Some people can make cotton candy at home.
Answer and explanation:
All three details talk about how fairs offer a lot of fun things for people. So,
this is the main idea that ties the details together:
Fairs have fun things for people to do. (Correct)
This sentence does not tie all of the details together, so it does not show the
main idea:
Some people can make cotton candy at home.
This sentence talks about making cotton candy at home. However, the
details from the paragraph are only about fairs.
The main idea of a text is the key point that the author is trying to make. It
is the idea you learn from all the parts of the text together.
Details are parts of a text that support, prove, or show the main idea.
You can use the details in a text to figure out the main idea. The main idea
should cover all the details, not just some of them.
Assignment 2:
Smartphones
Smartphones are phones that are used for more than making calls and
sending messages. People count on them for getting directions and finding
information on the internet. People also have fun listening to music, taking
pictures, and playing games on their phones. On the other hand,
smartphones have some downsides. They can make it hard to keep your
mind on important things, like studying. Some people even text during
meals, or when spending time with their family. Driving while using a phone
puts people in danger. Smartphones are useful, but they can cause problems
if not used safely and politely.
What is the main idea of the passage?
a. There are many good things about smartphones.
b. Smartphones can be used in both good and bad ways.
Key idea related to assignment 2:
A main idea is what a text is mostly about. Usually, it is the key point that
the author wants the reader to remember. The details in a text support,
prove, or show the main idea.
Answer and explanation for assignment 2:
The main idea of the passage is Smartphones can be used in both good
and bad ways.
Notice the words useful and downsides. This tells you that the main idea
involves good and bad things about smartphones.

the main idea?
Assignment 2: What do the details in a text do in relation to the main
idea?
