Science Department High School Physics Project on Vector Operations Follow all the instruction of in this project and show all your work. The declaration in Part VI of this pdf is for your guardian(s)/parent(s) to sign indicating that they have helped you and that you have taught them the physics necessary to understand your calculations and the concepts. Materials For this project, you will need a stop watch or mobile phone stop watch application or a watch with a timer on it, a map (print map, map from Google maps or other internet mapping site), a compass (magnetic north/south kind) or a mobile phone compass application, a protractor and a scientific calculator. You will also need the help of a parent(s) and/or another family member with a car and a driver’s license to complete this project. Part I: Velocity Vectors - - Plot a route on your map from your home to another location perhaps, a near-by supermarket, post office, gas station, McDonalds, this is your choice; it should be several kilometers from your home and must have a minimum of five directional changes. Using the stopwatch, your compass and the car’s odometer, drive the route you plot. Muhammad Abbas Science Department High School Physics - - Mark the distance to each change in direction you make, and the time to travel that distance, mark the direction in degrees using either a 16-point compass rose or the compass app on your mobile phone. Record the time taken for each leg of the trip. NOTE: Do NOT look at the speedometer while doing this. Parents, you may drive at a constant speed, or speed up and slow down as you wish. Using the equation for average velocity, calculate the average velocity of the car (and you) over each time interval. Make sure to include a direction, as velocity is a vector quantity. Tabulate your data for each leg of the trip showing the name of the location, distance travelled, direction, time taken, average velocity. All units should be expressed in SI units, so you may have to do some converting. Part I-A: Graphical & Algebraic Analysis of Displacement Vectors - Add the displacement vectors that you have covered graphically and algebraically. Part I-B: Graphical & Algebraic Analysis of Velocity Vectors - Add the velocity vectors that you have calculated graphically and algebraically. Part II: Calculating Acceleration while speeding-up - On a highway, or major road, time how long it takes your parents to accelerate from rest - (v = 0 km/hr) to different speeds. Parents, you may accelerate as quickly or a slowly as you are comfortable with (at no time should you drive at an unsafe speed or above the speed limit). Do several (not less than 5) different trials. Tabulate your findings showing the location you did the trial, the starting speed, the ending speed, the time taken, and the calculated acceleration indicating the make, year, and model of the car you rode in for this experiment. Remember that all units should be expressed in SI units. Part III: Calculating Acceleration while slowing-down (deceleration) - - For this part, the student will time how long it takes their parents to slow down, either by braking or by coasting (I recommend doing both), from a known speed to another known speed. They will calculate the deceleration (acceleration while slowing down) of the car themselves. Muhammad Abbas Science Department High School Physics - Do several (not less than 5) different trials. Tabulate your findings showing the location you did the trial, the starting speed, the ending speed, the time taken, and the calculated acceleration indicating the make, year, and model of the car you rode in for this experiment. Remember that all units should be expressed in SI units. Part IV: Your Submission - - Each group will submit a report, digitally as one pdf file, and a chart. The report should be typed with the exception the graphical addition. All equations and substitutions should be made with an equation editor not in plain text. The report should include the following details 1. Cover Page with title, your names and date (5 pts) 2. Creative Title (Please don’t use Physics Project :|) (3 pts) 3. Map (5 pts) 4. Tabulated Data (10 pts) 5. Calculations (10 pts) 6. Graphical Analysis of Vectors (10 pts) 7. Algebraic Analysis of Vectors (10 pts) 8. Parent Student Signature Page PRINTED, SIGNED, and SCANNED (5 pts) The chart should include the following: 1. Creative Title (Please don’t use Physics Project :|) (3 pts) 2. Map (5 pts) 3. Abbas’ class. I have been patient with them and worked with them until they understood the material and was confident that they knew the main ideas. I am grateful that they have taken an interest in me and my academic progress. ____________________________, [parent(s)] have helped my/our child with this project and been patient with them, while they were explaining to me the concepts and equations to be used in these experiments. I understand the physics that they are learning in Mr. M. Abbas’ class and I am grateful to have been a part of their learning process. The student discussed the following terms with me: Concept Discussed Vector Quantities/Scalar Quantities Speed/Velocity Acceleration Speeding up/Slowing down Displacement/Distance Graphical Addition of Vectors Algebraic Addition of Vectors Muhammad Abbas Parents’ Initials Science Department High School Physics Part VII: General Notes - - We will follow the same groups of the first term project.
