Introduction
The social styles test is how we were started, where we were divided into four different groups. At
that moment, I took pictures of 4 different social styles groups so I could ensure I’ll be working with
different people and how to communicate with them effectively and to also monitor how they perform
from each social style and how likely are they to be successful in the future.
Other than that, I have also asked my peers with different social styles how they performed and feel in
their recent group work. Listening to other’s people reflections has certainly made me feel the
situation in them so I can have more vast experience without working with them. This enables me to
learn quickly and how people would want to work with them most effectively. If this were carried out
in my group, they would have censored their feelings and reflection against me. As the reflection
exercise participating in class has allowed me to understand others and my self-reflection and I’m
starting to realise the power of reflection. (Sage, 2021)
How has my idea of talent in an organisation changed?
Things of one kind usually come together, Woe How has a lot in common when we first discovered
our values, creativity in one of them. But I did not see this as a threat as I thought it would have been
our strongest suit.
My first initial thought about Talents in Organisations is to work with people with similar interests so
it would bring out the best at what they do. For example, creative people who work in the same group
would inspire each other. After the group coursework, I have different perspectives about managing
talents.
The perception of what I have learnt is not about putting the best people together, is about putting the
right people and letting them be the best. From my reflection, I feel that I remain in my comfort zone
as I was only working with people that I am familiar with, and this disable me from discovering other
people skillsets and a chance to work with other people. However, it is a delightful experience to work
with multicultural people from different backgrounds.
Challenges
The main challenge is that we must gather 8 people at a time, but the cultural perception of time is
often mistaken. Other than that, we have people who were late to the meeting when the meeting is
over, and we must proceed with the meeting without their participation as our time will be
compromised as to wait for them. Besides that, we have team members who were “busy” during the
meeting and doing some unproductive work and distracted.
The second challenge is the limitation of technical know-how, which serves as our weakness as we
can only rely on one person for editing. But slowly, I realised that even in movie and video production
often work as a large team, but they were mostly working alone as this can be only handled by one
device and they will be helping on the side. (Sonaku, n.d.)
Lastly, the pains working with creative people is that everyone is madly in love with their idea and is
hard to take off the hard wire from the brain and listen to the others from another perspective. There’s
also a blind spot for entrepreneurs that sometimes as we grow feelings an attachment to our idea that
is hard to take opinion from someone.
Frustrations and Feelings
The thing that frustrates me the most is that the team has no intention of improvisation as most of the
people is carrying an attitude to wrap this thing up to making space for the next assignments. I feel
like we did not fully utilise our team efforts to the maximum as an advantage compared to other
groups that are smaller in size than us. But only half of us were only into the work.
This is also linked to the work ethics of others as were divided into two groups with the same work
and they rely on others’ work as the outcome because they know others have done the work and don’t
feel the necessity to complete the task distributed.
Solutions
I have found out that most of the problems and issues I faced had a solution, without seeking help. As
I delved deeper into self-reflection and asking myself why and understood the root cause instead of
throwing solutions to the problem.
1st- To first tackle people that are often like to be late or being unproductive we will set a schedule for
each time spent for each process and a person who was always late can have their task arranged at
later than expected start meeting time. As most of them say they don’t like to feel walking to a room
empty.
2nd- To distribute work specifications and objectives evenly, let them know why we need them to do
this work as it will influence the entire flow of the operation of the project.
3rd- Although with a teammate helping with the post-production videos, I have successfully helped
him reduce more time by creating the slideshow, background music and more. So that he will be
solely focusing on the video editing part.
4th- Even if I might be working with the same group of people that everyone is very adamant about
their creative ideas. I have an approach to encounter in the future. First, everyone is gathered and
write down their ideas for this project from the starts or each process when required and all
individuals take turns to read through other people’s work as this will work with the people is often
silenced as there will be no interruption when people are speaking their heart out and no offence
would be made towards the critique of people’s work if they might feel offended.
Managing Talents in a Nutshell.
In the future, I would first be aligned that everyone has the same goal and the same vision, to be sure
we were on the same boat at first. So that all the meetings carried out will be more effective and
efficient.
Imagine Woe How would like to pull a heist, everyone with different skill sets will be working in the
same team rather than all similar skill sets in the team. Usually, a project heist will consist of the
mastermind which makes all the planning and executions, hacker, safecracker, fighter, and getaway
driver. That is what makes a team. But in my team, we were lacking the mastermind who were
carrying out the plans and distributing workload and responsibility as the vast majority are
safecrackers. This shows that we can’t fully utilise their skills as we will lost in the directions.
To conclude, I believe that everything that requires a balance goes to the same analogy of YIN AND
YANG. (Frazier, n.d.) Therefore, I believe that in every group, there should be different people
filling up for the necessary role. Although we are peers, we need a leader who is capable to push the
group members to unleash most of the talent from everyone so we can track individuals’ progress,
managing talents. Imagine we have a project leader; we would have to distribute workloads
accordingly with each role and responsibility as this will reduce the rate of team members “freeriding” and overly relying on others.
Although we have only worked for a very limited time due to loads of failed meetings from gathering
all the people, I’m still shocked about the results. But I still feel proud for our work not because
compared to other people’s work but the given with the talents is the group that mattered things work
even not all people in working and devote their time in full capacity. In that, I believe that we can
work better with more people also based on what I’ve learned from the vast experience of others as
my reflection.
In the future, I hope I could work with people with serious work ethics else the people in the group
have different social styles and behaviours. The smaller group so can achieve better productivity like
the 80/20 Rule. So, I look forward to having a mixture of blend with the team in the future for group
work so all the teams in the future will be capable of providing competitive content.
I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude towards my team member as I realise video
editing is a hard skill I was lacking. In the modern world, a video would capture the audience
attention rather than a photo or word post. I would say picking up what the team is lacking will
enhance my opportunity in the future and thank my teammate would supporting and educating me on
the basics of video editing. This has enabled me with a new skill set to accomplish future work. This
group project has shown that all people and even ourselves could be our teachers if you go deeper
through the reflection practices.
