FINAL YEAR PROJECT TITLE: WET EXTRACTION OF INULIN FROM SISAL BOLE INTRODUCTION Inulin are group of naturally occurring water-soluble prebiotic fiber or polysaccharides produced by many types of plants like onion, leeks, garlic, asparangus, Jerusalem artichoke and many other foods. Sisal bole is a part of the 98% of the sisal biomass which is traditionally counted as waste. Sisal boles as a raw material for extraction of Inulin are advantageous since it is not competing with food. Extraction is the separation of medicinally active portion of plant using selective solvent through standard procedures. PROBLEM STATEMENT Inulin demand in Tanzania is increasing since it is used most in food industries, medical purposes. Various cheap natural source such as sisal boles could be used to extract inulin at low cost compared to imported inulin at the same concentration. This project aimed at extracting inulin from aqueous extract of agave sisalana boles (sisal bole) so as to increase potential of local market OBJECTIVES MAIN OBJECTIVE Wet Extraction of Inulin from sisal bole SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Determination Determination of moisture content of inulin extraction yield.
