Chapter Six - Know nonverbal cues, therapeutic communication techniques vs non therapeutic communication techniques When dealing with verbalized responses that the nurse may make, say each statement or question to yourself in your head and ask yourself -- does this sound therapeutic or non therapeutic, how would I respond if a provider said this to me? Does it sound judgmental, not relevant, snarky, etc.? Make sure you understand what the question is asking for, for example, the best therapeutic response vs. the least therapeutic response. Chapter Seven - Know individual, interpersonal and cultural factors that can affect a client's response to treatment. Chapter Eight - Know the components of the Mental Status Exam and be familiar with the techniques, observations, and questions the nurse would use to evaluate the different components.
