Go to the following website:
Choose “Start a New Game”
From the Main Menu Choose “What Are Enzymes?”
What are Enzymes?
1. What is an enzyme? What do they do?
Enzymes are proteins that speed up or Catalyze chemical reactions
2. What is a hydrolysis reaction? You may use a picture to explain.
Hydrolysis is a type of reaction that involves the Breakdown of a large moleculecalled Polymmer
into its building blocks (also known as Monomers). Like foods during digestion.
3. What is a dehydration reaction? You may use a picture to explain.
Dehadration synthesis is a type of reaction that involves building large molecules called
Polymers by joining together building blocks ( monomers). Like when your cells when you need
to build large molecules such proteins, fats, nucleic acids or complex carbs.

Specificity
4. What makes an enzyme specific?
Each enzyme has unique shape that makes and active Site. Each active site can only fit specific
Substrate or Substrates
5. How do the enzyme and substrate “fit” together?
It has a shape that fits the substrate like a glove fits a hand or a lock fits a key.

6. What three factors impact enzyme function?
Temperature, pH, concentrate of substance
Enzymes and Temperature
7. What do you observe at low temperature, medium temperature and high temperature? What
do you think “Denature” means?
At low temp the substrates move slow, medium they are moving faster and high the substrates
are moving eve faster
8. What is the best temperature for the enzyme?
40 degrees Celsius
9. Sketch the graph of enzyme function and temperature.

Enzymes and pH
10. What numbers on the pH scale are acidic?
1 through 6
11. What numbers on the pH scale are basic?
8-13
12. What do you observe at low, medium and high pH values?
*Note: Different enzymes function optimally at different pH ranges.
13. Sketch the graph of pH and enzyme function.
Take the mini quiz. My score was:___100_____
Enzymes and Substrate Concentration
14. What does substrate concentration mean?
Substrate concentration is the amount of substrate present that can be turned into product
15. Write down your hypothesis (Remember, “If, then” statement format!)
If substrate concentrate
Answer the following questions to help write your hypothesis.
a. What will happen to the enzyme reaction if the substrate concentration increases?
Initially, an increase in substrate concentration leads to an increase in the rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction.
b. What will happen to the enzyme reaction if the substrate concentration decreases?
This means that as the enzyme concentration decreases, the reaction rate will decrease.
16. What do you observe at low, medium and high substrate concentration?
At low enzyme concentrations or high substrate concentrations, all of the available ... We can graph dp/dt as a function of S to see
how the reaction rate .
17. Sketch the graph of enzyme function and substrate concentration.
Take the mini quiz. My score was:___100_____
The Enzymatic Machine
18. What is the optimum temperature for the enzyme?
40 ddegrees celcius
19. What is the optimum pH for the enzyme?
1.5
20. Can the enzyme be used more than once?
Yes they can be used more than once
21. What kind of reaction is being driven by the enzyme?
Enzymes involved in synthesis reactions have an active site which combines with the
two or more reactants, aligning them in such a way that they combine to form the
required product. Synthesis reactions require an input of energy from ATP. It also
releases energy in these reactions.
