Stages of the Listening Process
Pre-Assessment. Arrange the following events based on how you predict them to happen. Use numbers

Processing of the Activity
Which stages of the listening process should come in the same order all the time? Why?
The receiving stage should come first all the time because, it includes hearing and joining in. Going to is
the course of precisely distinguishing and interpreting specific sounds we hear as words. The sounds we
hear have no importance until we give them their significance in context.
What stages of the listening process can be interchanged? Why?
The stage of understanding in the listening process can be interchange because it is where the listener
determines the context and meanings of the words that are heard. The listener might get the wrong
interpretation from what he/she heard that’s why it is really important to listen carefully to the
message.
Enhancement Activity. Determine the stage of listening described by each of the following situations.
There should be no duplication of the answer.
Attending 1. Imagining how flu virus infects the human respiratory system as you listen to the lecturer
explain it.
Responding 2. Answering a job interview question from a member of the panel.
Receiving 3. Waking up suddenly at 3:30 in the morning to the ringing sound of your mobile phone.
Understanding 4. Keeping the doors and windows closed while watching movies in your bedroom.
Remembering 5. Memorizing cooking steps from Youtube before preparing the food in your kitchen.
Generalization. Brainstorm with a partner. Reflect on the importance of each stage to effective
listening.
Stage 1. Receiving
The first stage of the listening process is the receiving stage, which involves hearing and attending. As
clear as it might appear, to successfully assemble information through listening in, we should initially
have the option to truly hear what we're paying attention to. The clearer the sound, the simpler the
listening system becomes.
Stage 2. Attending
Matched with hearing, attending is the other portion of the receiving stage in the listening process.
Attending is the course of precisely recognizing and deciphering specific sounds we hear as words. The
sounds we hear have no significance until we give them their importance in setting. Listening is a
functioning cycle that builds significance from both verbal and nonverbal messages.
Stage 3. Understanding
The understanding stage is the stage during which the listener determines the context and meanings of
the words that are heard. Understanding what we hear is essential to gathering information.
Stage 4. Remembering
The remembering stage occurs as the listener categorizes and retains the information she’s gathering
from the speaker. Memory is essential throughout the listening process. Memory lets the speaker put
what she hears in the context of what she’s heard before.
Stage 5. Responding
The responding stage is the phase of the listening process wherein the audience gives verbal or
potentially nonverbal responses dependent on short-or long haul memory. When a listener responds
verbally to what she hears, the speaker/listener roles are reversed.
Application. Suggest a 5-step listening strategy for the following situations. Take note of the five
stages of listening while formulating the strategies.
1. Listening to a typhoon warning from the weather bureau.
Step 1- Wait patiently to the message relayed by the forecaster
Step 2- Listen carefully to all the information given by the forecaster.
Step 3- Understand all the data about the weather
Step 4- Remember the warning and information of the weather news.
Step 5- Time for preparing the essentials or your emergency kit and escape plans.
2. Participating in an online meeting on a group project.
Step 1- The group leader set a group meeting about the group project.
Step 2- Listen to the group leader
Step 3- Understand all the important instructions by your leader.
Step 4- Wait for the leader to say all the information and retain all the important things to do
Step 5- Ask questions or suggest any ideas that can improve the group project.

Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. As Stephen
Covey points out, we tend to listen with the intent to reply rather than to understand, or we fall into the
trap of dotting other people's stories, or we start to judge or evaluate what they have to say. On the
other hand, I think it is not always the case because some people feel eager to answer as many
questions as they can mostly when they are in knowledge of the subject, just to prove that they have
the answer to anything. Yet there are still many who truly listen because they want to understand
perspectives and opinions. It’s true for some and false for others. Nothing can be universal because we
are 7 billion individuals.

Descriptions add detail to what we read and help the reader "see" what the writer is thinking. When we
know how different descriptive words are used, we can better understand their meaning and build our
vocabulary.
Looking at the answers you wrote for item number 2 above, what does “facts” mean for you?
Facts are statements that are true and can be verified objectively or proven. In other words, a fact is
true and correct no matter what. Facts will also be unbiased. They do not support only one perspective
and present the information in an objective manner.
After reading your answers to item number 3, what does “instructions” mean for you?
The purpose of instruction is to help people learn. The goal of instructional designers is to make learning
easier, quicker, and more enjoyable. When you instruct someone, you're giving them a set of tools or
tasks to do something specific.

strategies important to informational listening?
Pay attention, show that you're listening, provide feedback, defer judgment, respond appropriately are
those common among all strategies for informational listening tasks because listening enhances our
ability to use the other language arts. Teaching listening allows students to follow directions, understand
expectations, and make sense of oral communication. As we improve as listeners, we learn to use the
same strategies to improve our command of the other language arts.
