Introduction
As I was preparing to write the Bulk Up Fast program, I was reading a book called Lifelong
Writing Habits by Chris Fox, an author who helps other authors get better and more
efficient at writing.
In the book, he mentions a phenomenon known as Propinquity. Essentially, it’s the effect
that small barriers have on our day-to-day decisions.
I’ll give you an example: You wake up and you’re craving a chocolate brownie. You
went to bed thinking about it and you woke up in the morning desiring it for breakfast
(I know, I know… people don’t eat brownies for breakfast, but stick with me here). You
jump out of bed, brush your teeth, and throw on your robe in preparation to drive right
up the street to a nearby gas station. You walk outside and it’s a beautiful day. You get in
your car, drive to the store, buy your brownie and you’re happy.
Now let’s modify this scenario a bit.
This time, when you walk outside, it’s freezing cold. As soon as you step foot outside,
the breeze hits you and your instincts are to quickly run back inside and shut the door.
Rather than changing into something warmer and proceeding on your mission, you
decide that maybe cereal is a better option. That’s propinquity at work.
Think about it…
How many times have you changed your mind about going somewhere just because
your car was low on gas and you didn’t feel like stopping?
We are inherently lazy and will typically opt for the path of least resistance.

If you want to ensure that you’re sticking to your diet and eating enough to finally gain
weight and pack on muscle mass, the first thing you must do is remove any and all
barriers. The more of these that exist, the more likely you are to skip meals and under
eat.

Not only are you removing barriers that will make it harder for you to stick to the
routine, but you’re creating barriers that make it tougher to veer off your course.
These simple steps will play a huge role in your overall success with the program. The
easier you make it for yourself to avoid skipping meals, the better the chances that you’ll
reach your calorie goals on a consistent basis.

5-minute meals
The 5-Minute Meal Principles:
1. No cooking skills needed! You won’t need to know your way around the kitchen
in order to prepare these meals. In fact, these recipes are so simple that my 10
year old daughter could prepare them.
2. Every meal in this guide can either be…
• Prepared in 5-minutes (or less).
• Pre-cooked for quick consumption later.
• Made using nothing more than instant/microwaveable foods.
3. Require only basic foods that are readily available in almost all parts of the
world. No matter where you live, you’ll be able to make these meals.
4. They can be easily adjusted to fit your own calorie and macronutrient needs.
5. They’re all just guidelines and examples. You do not have to prepare the meals
exactly as they’re laid out in this guide. Some of us have preferences, allergies,
and other variables that may require us to substitute or eliminate certain
ingredients. Feel free to do so!
Whether you’re counting calories, tracking macros, or following a meal plan, these 5
minute meals can fit right into your diet.
If we’re looking to hit only a specific number of calories, use these meal guidelines to
achieve that goal. If you’re tracking your macros, you can do the same—use these meal
examples and adjust them according to your macronutrient needs. If you’re on a more
rigid approach, then plug these meals (or variations of them) into your daily meal plans.
