Martin Luther king Jr
Where is the street located?
The street is located in Harlem, and it is was formally known as 125th street (Jelly-Schapiro,
2021). It is a two-way street that runs east-west in Manhattan, and it is often referred to as the
'main street' of Harlem.
Why was the person honored in that specific neighborhood?
The street was officially named after Martin Luther King's 'MLk' in 1984 to indicate
black freedom and pride. The civil leaders in Harlem also went ahead and named more streets
after other black luminaries.
The honored person
Mention the dates and achievements of the person
On 1st December 1955, he led the Montgomery bus boycott. The protest lasted for one
year and ended with the supreme court ruling that segregation on public busses was illegal. He

also gave the 'I have a dream' speech on 28th august 1963, which intensified the civil rights
movement (Anirudh, 2014).
A short history of the area
Harem was originally a Dutch village, organized in 1658. It was named after the city of
Haarlem in the Netherlands, and it has been filled with economic boom and bust cycles. The area
was culturally diverse, and it attracted many black artists, photographers, and writers, most of
them fleeing from the oppression in the south.

George Floyd
The person's achievements
He was an unarmed black man who died in 2020 after a Minneapolis killed him. He had
grand plans for his life and lived in Minneapolis. Police say that he was resisting arrest when the
white police officer murdered him roughly (Jean-Philippe, 2021). His death in police custody
empowered the black people's movements against racial discrimination and police brutality.
Where the street could be
The street could be in Chicago, where he was murdered.
Why they have not been honored yet.
Floyd has not yet been honored through a street name, most probably because the
incident happened recently. He has been celebrated in other ways, such as the George Floyd
square. His memorial celebration also happened in May 2021 at the square.
