Course Description
Lecture and laboratory course on the structure and function of the human body. The
cellular, tissue, organ and systems levels are considered. Emphasis is on the circulatory,
lymphatic, digestive, urinary, respiratory, endocrine, and reproductive systems. The
laboratory supplements the lecture with the use of torso models, articulated/disarticulated
skeletons, and a variety of system models for review. Lecture and lab will also consist of
online homework and virtual lab assignments using the following on McGraw Hill

There is no cost to you for this online resource. A free code will be given in class.
Lecture Objectives
The student must be able to demonstrate an understanding of:
1. The composition of blood, knowledge of blood groups and the mechanisms of
homeostasis.
2. The structure and the functions of the major parts of the human heart, the role and the
operation of the conducting system and the cardiac cycle.
3. The major organs of the respiratory system and their respective functions and what
occurs during pulmonary ventilation.
4. The structure and function of the major organs of the digestive system, and the
digestion of the major food groups.
5. The body's use of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates.
6. The structure and functions of the major organs of the urinary system and the process
of urine formation.
7. The major electrolytes found in the body, the fluid compartments of the body and the
movement of fluids between body compartments.
8. The homeostasis of acid and base levels within the body and the mechanisms that the
body uses to maintain homeostasis.
9. The major glands of the endocrine system, their secretions and the actions and effects
of the secretions.
10. The structure and functions of the organs of the male and female reproductive
systems.
Laboratory Objectives
The student must be able to demonstrate a recognition and understanding of:
1. Blood cell identification.
2. Human heart anatomy.
3. Models, charts of human viscera (including the digestive, respiratory and urinary
systems).
4. Sheep kidney, human kidney models and charts.
5. Selected histological specimens from all the systems covered.
Classroom Procedures
All college rules and procedures apply. No children are allowed in the classrooms. No
cell phones or pagers will be allowed on during the class. No food or beverages are
allowed in the laboratory. Masks are required during class.
Laboratory Procedures
Laboratory rules and procedure will be explained during the laboratory session and will
be enforced to ensure safety and efficiency in the laboratory. ANYONE IN THE
LABORATORY IS REQUIRED TO WEAR A LONG WHITE LAB COAT AT
ALL TIMES.
Attendance Policy
Attendance will be taken every time there is class. It is strongly recommended that you
attend lecture as much as possible. Very few students can master this class without good
attendance and taking good notes during lecture. All students should have a
buddy/classmate to obtain information/notes if you miss a lecture. Lab meets only once a
week. There are no make up for labs or repeat labs. If a student misses 3 labs, this
will result in an automatic failure of the lab.
Faculty and Student Responsibilities
It is the instructor’s responsibility to give you a syllabus and organize assignments and
classroom activities to assist you in learning the course material. The instructor will
inform you in advance of exams and will return to you the results within a week. You
can expect that the instructor is committed to the goal of having every student
successfully complete the class. You also have responsibilities to fulfill this term if you
hope to be successful in this class.
You are expected to:
1. Attend the class, come to the class on time and remain until the end of the class.
2. Perform class assignments before coming to the class and submit the work on
time.
3. Take notes during lecture and ask questions.
4. Show good listening skills by focusing on the speaker and restating in your notes
what is being said.
5. Prepare for exams and take them on time.
6. Exhibit positive attitude and cooperate with the instructor and classmates.
7. Keep record of your grades to determine your progress.
8. Explore college resources such as the library, learning center and tutors.
Tests and Grading Procedures
The lab will account for 40% of your grade. The lecture will account for the other 60%.
There is a total of 1000 points. The exams will be multiple choice, true/false, fill in the
blank, and matching and you will need to provide a scantron for each exam. Online
assignments given to students each comprise the homework. There is a quiz/exam every
week.
The breakdown of points is as follows
Midterm 100 points
Final 100 points
Quizzes 200 points-quizzes are 20 points each. Highest 10 quizzes counted toward grade
Lecture homework 200 points
Lab practical exams 200 points
Lab homework 100 points
Anatomy and Physiology Prep homework 100 points
There will be a total of two lab exams (100 points each). The lab exams will consist of a
practical part and a written part and will be made up from material that was covered in
the lab and from lab assignments. The lab exam dates will be given at the beginning of
each unit. All lab exams will be worth 100 points. Lab is a very important part of the
learning experience.
The following is the WCCCD grading system:
900 – 1000
800 – 899
700 – 799
600 – 699
