How will we get there?
Stephen Covey’s concept of “Big Rocks”
11
12
What are our “big rocks” for the first six weeks of
school?
1. Relationships with students and families
2. Consistency (with schedules, platforms, formats,
routines, feedback) so that students can focus on
connection and learning.
3. Connection, reading, writing and math everyday

you can begin introducing routines from week 2.
Week 2
▪
▪
Building routines for asynchronous reading, writing, and math every day
Start Making Meaning and Eureka Lessons (if you didn’t in week 1)

Weeks 5&6
●
Start regularly scheduled small groups
14
The daily/weekly schedule and the Big Rocks
● Relationships: through live morning meetings/community
circles and lessons daily

understand and internalize it :) Aligned lunch, PE,
start/end times for families who are juggling
● Time for synchronous and asynchronous instruction
● Equitable - students who need more get more in the
form of small groups, gradual release, teacher office

Students will be able to calculate the area
of a square by drawing a grid and counting
the units.
Students will be able to
name two character traits
that describe the protagonist
in ____.
24
The task today:
Create (or revise) your grade level’s unit
map at least through September.
25
Steps
1. Start in grade level teams (though it’s fine to work separately after you
have a plan). Find “Unit Map 2020-2020” in schoology (also in your grade
level’s instructional folder).
2. Use your curriculums and unit plans to pace out your monthly learning
objectives for each subject. Focus on teaching the essential standards and
keep in mind that some lessons will need to be split over two days to keep
learning objectives bite sized. You may also be able to skip/consolidate
lessons!
This is a living document that can be adjusted as you gather more information,
but it will help you stay on pace to address all of the essential standards this
year.
