THE THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE EXHIBITION
PROMPT NO:22: What role do experts play in influencing our consumption or
acquisition of knowledge?
CORE THEME: KNOWLEDGE AND THE KNOWER.
WORD COUNT: 950
1
Introduction
For this exhibition I focused on the question “What role do experts play in influencing our
consumption or acquisition of knowledge?” According to me, to acquire knowledge, one
needs the expertise and skills, which an individual gains only through experience or
education. [42]
Object 1- My Cricket Bat
The first object chosen by me is my personal cricket bat. This bat is used by me regularly
during my cricket coaching under the strict guidance of my coach. I believe my cricket coach
is an expert, as he clearly understands the game and helps me explore various bowling
scenarios, based on the requirements of my batting position in a match. Coach has been in
this field for a long time and has acquired in-depth knowledge about the game through
personal experience and practise. Furthermore while coaching us he links his acquired
knowledge to real life matches, exploring the good shots and mistakes made by players, this
helps me understand the game better with an example to connect the information to. As a
coach with immense experience, he has helped me design my own style of batting which is
2
solely based on my abilities as a batsman. This makes him an expert as he has shaped my
growth as a cricketer by continuous motivation and advice.
This object links to the prompt because it is a means of producing and acquiring knowledge
that is very current and relevant to my personal development as a sportsman. The cricket bat
allowed me to implement the advice that was shared by my coach and develop the skill set
required by me to develop a batting style unique to me and blend my game to different
scenarios with the sport.
This object has been included in the exhibition as it explores the values of the role of an
expert while influencing the spread of acquired knowledge. In this example value equates the
help given by an expert to a novice to consume years of developed skills and knowledge to
improve skills required. Thus one can argue that the core value of imparting knowledge to
develop a skill is the true intent of an expert and clearly done with the help of the above
object. [310]
Object 2- Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar
My second object is picture of the diet plan by Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar. Ms. Diwekar, is
a very popular nutritionist, who gives advice to many celebrities who have adopted her
recommended diet plans. Most people have achieved positive results from her diets and thus
believe her advice and find her diets reliable when it comes weight loss. As a family we also
3
have a tried out her diets and have experienced a positive outcome in our health (Diwekar),
due to her advice. Furthermore, she personally also follows the diets and the results are
visible to all. Her knowledge combination foods is in-depth and her planned exercises have
also help me to a certain extent. Her expertise in her field has made her knowledge more
trustworthy, which makes the acceptance and consumption a positive outcome over the
knowers.
The object links to the prompt as the expert knowledge allows the knower to consume the
knowledge to the best of their ability and develop an analytical understanding of the diets
and their impacts. Besides in direct connection to the prompt, the diets are created after a
detailed study of us as a family and designed to achieve results effectively to us. Thus, as am
expert the knowledge shared by Ms Diwekar, has helped us explore our personal abilities
focused to our personal health (Diwekar).
This object is relevant to this exhibition as it allows individuals to consume the knowledge
shared by an expert and also tests the faith individual knowers have on experts and their
knowledge. The object helps understand the role of experts when it comes to presenting
accurate and reliable knowledge to the knower. The opinion of the expert in this exhibition
allows the knower to objectively test the results of the diet and thus, consume the presented
knowledge without innate biases. [300]

Object 3- Neserine Malik Article on Covid Pandemic
My third object is an article by Neserine Malik, focused on the proliferation of
misinformation of data on the extent of covid19 information and its impact on the economic
development of states. Her role as an expert journalist is to acquire accurate knowledge
through personal introspection and peer research, which is then passed down to knowers
through her articles. Since Ms. Malik is a renowned columnist of the Guardian where she has
analysed data by using focused research on various topics. Thus, this analysis and research
adds to the reliability of her content in the current article ( Malik). The focus of the article is
to provide reader relevant and required information on how leaders of various nations are
dealing with the pandemic, she has compared different practises of various nations to analyse
5
their social and economic viability. Ms. Malik is considered an expert as she focuses on the
key aspects of her research and provides targeted arguments that make a knower think and
question the knowledge received.
This object links to the prompt because the article is an important research tool we use to
understand knowledge about issues that are not clearly explained to us by the government and
helps the knower in consumption of the information of how various economically stable
governments are dealing with the spread of Covid in their nations. Furthermore, the article
also clearly highlights the various areas of research. Thus, we do not get a distorted picture of
the facts but a focus on varied perspectives of the same issue. The knowers consumption of
knowledge is based on analysing different perspectives and finally reaching their own
understanding of the pandemic without being affected misinterpretation. Hence it can be
clearly seen how experts can help knowers in the consumption of knowledge.
This object has been included in the exhibition as, unlike the earlier two objects the article
conveys the message that all acquired knowledge is not always positive, also explores the
idea that even experts need to provide evidence and justification for the knowledge that they
are sharing and the reliability of the information is very important for the knower ( Malik).
The object highlights that an expert is also aware of personal flaws and limitation that can
impact the reliability of the information and this can impact the final outcome of the
information’s received by the knower. [310]
