Revised March 16, 2021 DePaul University School of Accountancy & MIS ACC 250 ‐ Career Management for Accountants Spring 2021 – Remote Course Syllabus Instructor: XXX Office: 6000 DePaul Center (312) 362‐6760 (office) Email: XXX Hours by appointment Course Description: This course is a 2 credit course designed to explore and manage the professional expectations and career potential of your Accounting major. Students will participate in hands‐on resume building activities, practice interviews and apply research and evaluation skills to execute job search and career management strategies. Students will learn about Career Center resources and internship opportunities as ways to prepare for successful job searches and to maximize their potential for long term professional growth. This is a remote class, so there will not be any live class sessions. All material will be posted on D2L, based upon the schedule in the most current syllabus. Course Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be assigned a mentor who is a member of the accounting community, and who are model examples of an accounting education in action. Students will apply networking, research, and communication skills in the process. 2. Students will apply writing skills in the preparation and/or updating of professional quality resumes, cover letters, emails, follow‐up letters and building a professional LinkedIn profile. 3. Students will analyze and demonstrate the key elements of an effective approach to a job interview, including practice interviews, preparation, follow‐up, and appropriate standards of business etiquette, offer acceptance and appearance during the interview and on the job. 4. Students will learn about career opportunities in the accounting field and different company environments. 5. Students will gain an understanding of the transition from college to a first job and learn realistic expectations for this transition and beyond. Online Course Blueprint Each week, we will address some area of career strategy and management. Here are the expectations for a typical week: Recorded lectures: The recorded lectures for each week are similar to the type of lecture you would expect in a classroom setting. Assignments: Each week, you will have an assignment designed to advance your career strategy and success. Other online material: As appropriate, I may post third party material (podcasts, etc.) that may be helpful to your understanding of the material covered each week. Discussion board: Each week, I expect you to actively participate in the “issue of the week”, and share at least one thoughtful comment. You should also use the Discussion Board for any general questions you have about the material or our class. For purposes of this class, the week will run from Monday through the following Sunday. So, material related to the first class will be posted on Monday, March 29, and then weekly on every subsequent Monday.
