Laurio last November 2, 2021. Mr. Rañada: Before we just want to inform that this meeting will be recorded. Just for documentation purposes only. Would that be okay ma’am? Ms. Laurio: Alright, okay. Mr. Rañada: (Introduction) Good day maam! We are the group 2, I am Razzyno Ranada, Dave Palomo, Angelica Iris Suarez, Paulo Ralar, and Patricia Francisco. We are all from Far Eastern University taking up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. And we all would like to thank you for being with us today despite your busy schedule you give us time to interview you as part of our final requirement in one of our courses Leadership and Decision Making. This interview will focus more on your characteristics and skills as a leader in your own business. In which it will help us to determine the leadership style you tend to employ So, without further ado let’s start. First of all, may we humbly request for you to have a brief introduction of yourself. Ms. Laurio: I’m Marilou Laurio but they just call me Malu, and I am running 5 businesses. I am running my GEMBAR Enterprises Incorporated and the president CEO of GEMBAR Enterprises Incorporated. It is an ISO certified company. And we also have the construction company, the OLYMPUS BUILDERS AND MINING CORPORATION, I am also the authorized managing officer, and I am also the president CEO of the company. We also have casino; I am also the 17 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester president CEO of the casino located in Calamba. Also, we have the mining I am also the president CEO of our mining company in Pangasinan, so we have a lot of companies that I am running. For now, I think what’s written here is that we would just be talking about the GEMBAR Enterprises Incorporated, most of our companies is ISO certified. I’m 50 years old already and maybe we have lots of employees here, maybe that’s all for now. Mr. Rañada: On behalf of my group members, it’s our pleasure to meet you ma’am. Ms. Laurio: Thank you. Me too. Mr. Rañada: For our first question ma’am, may we ask, when did you start your business? What inspired or motivated you to decide to be in this kind of business? Ms. Laurio: I started doing business during my mid 20s but some of those businesses are closed already. And I change it with this GEMBAR Enterprises that was 2008 but of course even prior to that I started doing various transactions already in the same line of business. Just like our business which is trading company, we started trading company like a sporting goods, etc. Of course, my inspiration of doing business is first I earned a lot of money. Well, necessity and because I am the breadwinner of the family. You know because I came from a poor family also and it is my responsibility of helping my parents and specially, I have younger siblings to send to school so maybe that’s my motivation, that’s what inspired me to do business. Mr. Rañada: Yeah, I think that’s true ma’am. It’s true that when you have your family at your back, that really inspires you and motivates you to do well in your business. And without a doubt that’s the reason why you are successful in this business. For the next question, in business and entrepreneurship, it requires a variety of tasks such as marketing, accounting, customer service, and more. When you started your business Sir/Ma’am, have you earned any of the following in preparation for the business? 18 Course Code: AY: Ms. Laurio: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester Yes, I have earned a college degree on business entrepreneurship. I studied at PUP for the course BSCM. I took a degree on entrepreneurship as I already know that the knowledge and skills will be helpful in my future endeavors, but I am a believer of continuous education so until now I am currently enrolled at PUP to take my master’s degree. At my age, I am still studying so even today I do not stop learning. I also took formal education at Harvard University for entrepreneurship, and training through my practical practices were also needed since it is important. Mr. Rañada: So, it’s nice to know that ma’am. Even though you’re already 50, you still find studying interesting, so that’s good to know ma’am. So that’s all for my questions ma’am. The next questions will be asked by Dave Palomo. Mr. Palomo: Thank you for that Mr. Rañada. Good morning, ma’am once again I am Dave Palomo, and for the next questions ma’am in connection for the previous question, do you still think it is necessary to have a degree to start entering the entrepreneurship and business matter? Ms. Laurio: Yes, as with all things in life, to be able to succeed, the first most important thing is to believe in yourself and the things you do. For example, an effective salesman or a saleswoman, like me before, is someone who believes in the product that they sell, (it is important for a salesman to fully know what they are selling), so if you are not convinced with your product then how can you expect someone to buy it? So, this example is the same with yourself, first, you must believe in what you do, with this state, it comes from hard work. You do not learn skills in school, especially when it comes to a business matter. The school will teach you the technical knowledge and skills, and passion must come from the person. We see many people today without a degree who are successful in their fields. business tycoon like John Gokongwei is a very good example of someone who, while having a rough academic life compared to others, fought hard just to at least earn his degree. At the end of the day, earning a degree is still important, so 19 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester if you have been given an opportunity, you should never waste it. It is the most ideal for one to have a degree and also to pursue their dreams. Mr. Palomo: Very well said, Ma’am. Even I believe that degree is just a steppingstone, what matters most is the experience to start entering the entrepreneurship and business matter. Next question, what are the most important values to you as a leader? Can you tell us a situation where you have demonstrated those values? Ms. Laurio: For me, the most important value is to believe in yourself. If you have this, everything else will follow. Also, hard work, desire to learn, and then the skills are the three important values that I consider. There were many instances in my businesses experience where I encountered difficulties and obstacles. During those moments, instead of losing heart (hopelessness), I convinced myself that it was just a temporary setback. So now I enjoy looking back and reminiscing on all those moments with a faith was attested and I overcome those obstacles. I could say that my companies are very successful for now, we are not just a multimillion company but of course bigger and better than that. Mr. Palomo: Thank you for that ma’am and I also believe in you. These values will definitely help us and even those aspiring leaders to succeed in the future. Once again ma’am, thank you for answering my questions, it’s an honor to question a successful leader like you. Next, may I call on Angelica Suarez for the next set of questions Ms. Suarez: Thank you Dave, once again I am Angelica and here are my questions, how do you respond to criticisms, and how important is it to have a positive mindset as a businessperson? Ms. Laurio: There are different kind of criticisms. There are constructive and which we must ponder on so much to improve. How can you improve yourself by criticizing some also which is just known and just ignore them especially with social media today, many people are fun of criticizing others. Even if 20 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester they do not, the person or the situation you must learn to ignore them. This is why the value of believing in yourself is important. No matter what people say about you, you must never lose faith in yourself and most importantly in God. That’s All. Ms. Suarez: We know po that it wasn’t easy to manage a company and your attitude makes it clear that you can continue to grow with your company. Next question, do you delegate power and function to your employees? How do you monitor the performance of your employees? Ms. Laurio: Yes. I delegate power and function to all the employees. It’s because that is what we called the macro management. Delegating tasks is very important but you have to. When you delegate you must also know the kind of work and the ability of the person to whom you delegate. These things must match because different person have different talent and different attitude. Even if you just have a one certain degree, its way different. You delegate its better if you do not need to monitor the person every step of the way or what we called the minimal supervising. So, ideally you just want the result, but it also depends on if employees are trainee, you must teach and monitor him or her as closely as you can and maybe you should know, and I motivate also all my employees there are delegating so that they will work happily. But at first, you really must delegate tasks and you should know their capabilities and capacities so that they will not have a hard time. Ms. Suarez: We admire you work ethic and your talent in managing your company. That’s all. And for the nest set of questions, it will be asked by Paulo Ralar. Mr. Ralar: Collaborations and achieving unity with team members are highlighted in our lessons to be a successful leader. In your business experiences, how important is collaboration in your business operation? Ms. Laurio: Collaboration is very essential in every business that is why experiences form of all businesses. I build a good and short a working relation for each and every one. When there are issues or conflicts arising from all of my 21 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester employees, I personally talk to them because the conflict cannot be resolved, and I remind them about the professionalism that is important thing to be able to work together besides disagreement. We cannot control everything because of jealousy etc. sometimes they have to understand that they need to be professional. Mr. Ralar: How do you talk to them when regards to conflict calmly of strict? Ms. Laurio: Most of the time calmly because you cannot decide well when you are angry. Mr. Ralar: Do you accept new ideas and suggestions from your workers/employees? How do you handle disagreements with co-workers? Ms. Laurio: Yes, I accept ideas I’m open to ideas even from my employees even though it is bad or good it’s still an idea because you can learn from it so I’m open to any ideas from anybody even my employees because democracy where everyone is entitled to their opinion because you were the one who will filter it wherever it is good or not. I’m hands on in my business. Disagreement is also welcome because more ideas are better than one but at the end of the day, I’m the one who is in charge of the business. Mr. Ralar: Thank you ma’am. I’d like to call on Patricia Francisco for the last two questions. Ms. Francisco: Thank you Paulo, once again ma’am I’m Patricia and for our ninth question, who is the business leader (local or international) that you admire the most? What do you think are the leadership skills of an ideal leader in business? Ms. Laurio: A lot. I have business leaders who I admire here in the Philippines and from other countries like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates of course. Because of their innovative thinking. Because business nowadays, once it does not innovate and if it’s only stagnant, it will not grow. That’s why I really admire them because of their innovative thinking. But here in the Philippines, it will be John Gokongwei and other who rose from the poverty since they are alike 22 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester me whom really started coming from the poor state of life. There, Gokongwei who rose from poverty then became successful. Stories like that, example someone who is before only sells shoes like Henry Sy then now has a lot of branches of SM. People like that, who rose from the ranks and now are a very successful people. Unlike others that already came from successful and rich families. Others that I also admire and like includes Bill Gates, as he mentioned before, he is not good at school but now with his business he employed their class valedictorian before as a manager of his own business. That kind of stories is what I admire, people have our common character, there are also failures, but it did not stop them. Just like Alibaba, they did not stop pursuing their dreams, they did not stop easily, they always believe I their capabilities same as Alibaba. He experienced applying to a lot of job openings, but he was not always got hired and he even went to Harvard but was not accepted. I admire them because despite all the challenges they have encountered it did not stop them from achieving what they have now. You students who are still young, their stories of success can also happen to you. Not only because you have experienced failure, then it will be the reason for you to quit. That’s not a good mindset. In business, you will face a lot of trials and obstacles so you all must pursue what is it that you believe and what you can within yourselves. But not all are given chances in business. In the end, you will still be the one who’s responsible to make yourselves successful. Ms. Francisco: I also do believe that it is also very important to have someone who you will look up to and admire whether it’s in the same field that you have or not, because that person can help you to become even more driven and more inspired to do something beyond your limitations and also knowing and learning the skills that the person we admire has, it will make us bring out our best in doing everything. Ms. Francisco: And for the very last question that we have for you what thing/s you enjoy most in your business? 23 Course Code: AY: Ms. Laurio: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester Business is our passion, and so is my husband’s. It’s our passion. Business is a passion so in itself business is one reason why I wake up early in the morning. Business is also a service of helping others. Like, your business must always be successful because all of your employees depend on you and in the performance of your business, so it really is for helping others. Especially in this time of pandemic, no successful business goes along the way in helping people and employ them financially secure. Because in our business, even though pandemic happened, we avoid dismissing employees and all of them are well vaccinated through our effort. Through that, we are delighted seeing our employees. These are some of the things that I enjoy most in our business besides making money, comes our employees being happy and we help them in sustaining the needs of their families. Ms. Francisco: Thank you for sharing your answer, ma’am. I also personally believe that the success of a person matters most when it was being shared and it becomes an instrument to in helping others. (Closing Remarks) And so far as our interview went well, these are all the questions we have prepared for you. We are very grateful for the time and opportunity that you have given us during this interview with you today. You have given us a clear overview of the position you are in and the experiences and accomplishments you have achieved that really emphasizes the values and leadership skills you have shown within your business organization. We are also this amazed and thrilled having you as our interviewee and please know ma’am that with this interview we have learned a lot of lessons especially in the prospect of running and being inside the business world. We enjoyed talking with you Ms. and we hope and wishes that your business become even more fruitful and successful. Thank you so much ma’am. 24 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester PHOTO DOCUMENTATION The photos in this part present the interviewers' experience on their conversation through the online meeting with Ms. Marilou G. Laurio and their experience completing their paper. 25 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER/ PERSONAL PLAN This part addresses the personal plan of every interviewer highlighting their experiences, reactions, and feedback regarding the interactive communication with Ms. Marilou G. Laurio. Nowadays, so many people are getting into and trying to do business. There comes a few who succeeds, and there are also those who fail in venturing into the business world. In the interview we have conducted for our final requirement in our Leadership and Decision-Making course, we met Ms. Marilou G. Laurio who is the president and the chairperson of GEMBAR FRANCISCO, PATRICIA Enterprises Incorporated. In the course and flow of our interview with her, we learned so many things from her answers to the questions we have prepared. The interview focused on classifying and identifying the skills and abilities that Ms. Laurio has that she continuously demonstrates in the daily course of her work. Managing a business and people includes the very important competencies, skills, and values being a leader. But how can this be implemented correctly and what is its impact on the business and the people? According to Doyle (2021), to be an effective leader, (see Appendix C.3) you need to be flexible enough to cope-up and adjust to an ever-changing workplace. Along with it is importance of having skills that can greatly help with communicating, motivating, and delegating responsibilities in your team. After I read this article by Doyle, Ms. Laurio was the first person that really came into my mind that I have got the opportunity to meet and interview which is a business leader who’s able to show these skills and traits with her profession. As I thoroughly study and reflect from the answers that we received from Ms. Laurio in our set of questions for her, something was genuinely emphasized on my mind. This is “the extremely importance of the people you have in your business and how they become affiliated with the success that the business has achieved.” I thought at first, having a good set of competencies, skills, and values as a person aspiring to be in business is enough to be exceptionally successful. However, that idea of mine shifted, especially when I have understood deeply the significance of 26 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester directing the people around you so that you can all be successful simultaneously to the things you all want to pursue. Additionally, having to know that “hard work, desire to learn, and obtaining excellent skills” are the very three important values that Ms. Laurio considers. It made me appreciate how important it is even now that we are still students, we should be very committed to the things we do even if it is minimal. We will not notice it in an instance, but it can be our actual steppingstone to becoming the better version of ourselves that can make us be those wonderful and uniquely distinguishing leaders of tomorrow. Ever since, I also found out just how important her people are to Ms. Laurio, I was even more astounded and amazed at her. That despite the pandemic happened, she really tried all her best and effort not to lay off people from the business because she knew and values that there were families that would be affected. Because of this, it became more clearer to me that in the fundamental archetypes of leadership we have studied, she really demonstrated being a FatherJudge type of a leader (see Appendix C.1). It was also because of how she expresses the way she controls the flow of business that leads her on taking great support and concern towards her people and applying moral guidance to her way of regulating. Furthermore, I have learned from her that having people who will inspire us to be a righteous and well-known leader is something that is also vital, whether it is our family, friends, or someone we admire in the line of work. I have comprehended that the more we became inspired, the more we will have the desire to be determined and be driven by what we do which will ultimately result in it becoming our passion. All of these helped me to categorize her being in the bracket of the Baby Boomers generation (see Appendix C.2), wherein she proved that neither the state of life nor poverty can be an obstacle and hindrance to achieving the things you really want and dream of reaching. She believes that if you have the set of goals for yourself, accomplish them no matter what happens because you are the one who first need to believe in yourself that you can, you can accomplish all of it. We have learned and come to know so much in this interview. Not only that we achieved and complied with the objectives stated in the guided outline, but we in ourselves have gained so many lessons that we have discovered. One is the qualities and physical characteristics that a leader supposed to have, another is the meaning and importance of unity and collaborating in business with the people in it, and lastly and the most substantial for me is how to prepare and organize 27 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester oneself for the hardships and difficulties to go through in attaining the dreams that we all have. Therefore, easily quitting should not be in the vocabulary of an aspiring person to be successful. 28 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester First and foremost, it is a privilege to speak with Ms. Marilou Lauria, a successful leader, and owner of GEMBAR companies and other businesses. Upon the said interview, we have concluded that Ms. Marilou Laurio has a solid and dominant personality towards her followers. As a result, we believe that she is more of a 'Father-Judge' leadership archetype, in charge of DAVE, PALOMO S. providing moral advice and direction to her people. To elaborate further, leadership is a path that necessitates a striking balance between experiences and knowledge in order for leaders to stay on track and continue to grow. As Ms. Laurio believes, earning a degree is just a stepping stone, what matters most is the experience to start entering the entrepreneurship and business matter molding him/her to be a successful leader. In addition, we discovered how engaged and concerned Ms. Lauria is about her followers' ideas and ambitions. In fact, these are excellent qualities of a leader, for it has shown a democratic leadership style. According to a study made by Amanchukwu (2015), democratic leadership develops higher dedication, more innovative problem-solving, and increased productivity. As someone who has this kind of leadership style, he/she can take risks and actions for the better good of the people and is willing to be open about any opinions or beliefs of others (see Appendix C.5). In line with this, if I were to assume in which generation Ms. Marilou Laurio would fall regardless of her age. I think she would fit in with the baby boomer generation of workers. As defined by Zemke (see Appendix C.2), Baby boomers are postwar babies who are also experimenting with their lifestyles and questioning their status quo. In connection with Ms. Lauria, she used to be a saleswoman and hailed from a poor background before. Basically, these difficulties didn't stop her from pursuing her dreams; instead, they served as fuel to achieve, leading her to a successful life. Hearing experiences like this made me realize that anyone can be a leader no matter where we are in life. It's simply a matter of having the correct mindset, work ethic, discipline, and values, all of which Ms. Marilou Laurio possesses. Overall, it was a great experience to have a conversation with Ms. Marilou Lauria. Her life experiences and ideals were very motivating, and I would definitely consider following in her footsteps in the near future. I also believed that all of the abilities and principles mentioned were exceptional and necessary for one person to achieve. Furthermore, as we can see, the world's level 29 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester of ethics and morality has deteriorated to the point that we have forgotten what it takes to be a true leader. Essentially, this conversation assisted me in exploring my own idea of leadership and further discussing the subject in a real-life context. 30 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester This reflection paper of an interview conducted on November 2, 2021, with Ms. Marilou. Miss Marilou has moral solid ethics and determination to do the right thing for others. When issues come up regarding employees, she always tries to base her decisions on what is in the best interest of the employees. She takes steps to make a more concentrated effort to RALAR, PAULO R. communicate with and listen more closely to the staff in her business. Miss Marilou is a natural leader who knows how to encourage people and bring out the best in them. She gives opportunities to her staff that is a sign of a good leader. While we are interviewing her, she seems to be a calm and kind leader. She started from the bottom now she is CEO of many companies she does the right things we study well and never stop learning she is now taking her master's degree. She also allowed me to take the leadership role in the interview. This was refreshing because I could detect that she wanted me to get everything I needed to report the interview accurately. I could see that she was genuinely interested in my success while talking about her. Although she has two or more companies, she handles her employees and other stuff well. As we speak, she told many values in life, but I reflected and told myself to be humble at all times. Even though we have a busy or hectic schedule, we must enjoy it because, until the end, we have a happy life. In life, we must work with pleasure to have a calm feeling. In life, we should accept ideas from others even though you are the boss. We must take ideas from our employees because we don't know all the things I live, maybe they know what we don't, so we should accept ideas. Just take your time to enjoy the process. We don't rush things. We must do it correctly so that the result of our doings is good. Lastly, when it comes to the development of a company, leadership and management roles might work in different capacities while still being the same. A leader is meaningless if it does not provide a systems-based management structure, and management would be helpless without leadership's work as the foundation of ideas (see Appendix C.4). Ms. Marilou is fit to be a leader from her characteristics. She shows how to communicate well with her employees how she handles, and she is not a boss. She is a mindful leader. 31 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester Last 2nd of November 2021, we've conducted an online interview with Ms. Marilou G. Laurio, the president and the chairperson of GEMBAR Enterprises Incorporated. This interview was primarily concerned with the abilities and skills of Ms. Laurio. That will show the type of leadership she tends to employ in managing and leading an organization. As a student RAZZYNO, RAÑADA R. conducting this interview, we have learned a lot with Ms. Laurio when it comes to being a successful leader and what it takes to become a successful leader. Giving importance to those people that surround you is one of the things that Ms. Laurio taught us. For her family, Ms. Laurio sets them as her motivation to be in the position that she is in right now. Her love for her family motivates Ms. Laurio to become more courageous and to continue working hard in her business. And for Ms. Laurio's employees, she makes sure that she maintains a mutually respectful relationship with them. When it comes to her employees, I think he has these characteristics of being a Father-Judge type of leader (see Appendix C.1) provides oversight, control, moral guidance, and caring protectiveness. Ms. Laurio provides oversight and control in a way that she makes her employees accountable for the responsibilities she delegated to them. Whenever she delegates, Ms. Laurio makes sure her employees' capabilities so that they will not find a hard time doing their respective tasks. Also, part of her delegation of responsibilities is motivation. Ms. Marilou believes that motivation will help her employees be productive and remain on what they are doing, and these fall under the characteristic of moral guidance. And for caring protectiveness, as we all know, we are under a pandemic, many companies laid off most of their employees but with GEMBAR Enterprises Inc., under Ms. Laurio believes that "no successful business goes along the way in helping people and employ them financially secure." So with this, they remain all their employees and ensure that they are all fully vaccinated before they get to their usual operations. Moreover, Ms. Laurio also taught us that we should not remain stagnant. In life, we should keep on acquiring knowledge and competencies for us to expand our skillset and develop future opportunities. Given that Ms. Laurio is already in her 50s, she still manages to continue her studies and is currently taking up her master's degree. That's why she is an advocate for continuous education. And with this, I made her classified as part of The Baby Boomers generation since she 32 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester has one of its characteristics: the "achievement orientation" (see Appendix C.2 and C.7). She has this drive and passion for continuing to accomplish her studies, as Ms. Laurio believes that this education will help her succeed in her future endeavors. Therefore, this online interview has been successful and meaningful simultaneously. It just does not help us identify the leadership style of Ms. Laurio. Still, it also enabled us students to learn more about how we will be successful leaders and as individuals as we go on to our future endeavors. 33 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: We started Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester our November with a meaningful online interview with the CEO of GEMBAR Enterprise incorporated. We had this interview with Ms. Malu for us to know what kind of leader she is to her employees and businesses. As a student of today's generation, I have gain new knowledges from her specifically on her journey to becoming a successful leader in all SUAREZ, ANGELICA of her businesses. Ms. Marilou is the kind of leader who thinks of the welfare of her employees especially now that the pandemic is still on-going, she wants to make sure that everyone will be safe at work. Being the breadwinner of their family made her more motivated and inspired than she has always been. She wanted to give her family the best that life can offer. She is also a very kind and caring to all her employees. Her positive mindset, attitudes and golden heart made her more successful in her chosen field. When it comes to her companies and employees, she has the characteristics of the father judge who always provides oversight, control, moral guidance and caring (see Appendix C.1). Provide, Control and oversight in a way that she always makes sure to delegate their works by their abilities and knowledge for them to enjoy and be more positive towards their work. She guides and motivates her employees to give their best in everything that they do especially at work and caring because even if the pandemic is still active, she as the CEO of GEMBAR did not lay off any employees because she wants to help all of her employees as much as she can. I also learned from her to keep on learning new things and knowledge that would help us to be successful in our own little ways in the future. Also, she belongs to the baby Boomers generation (see Appendix C.2) because of her characteristics she is good at handling her businesses as well as her employees and still manages to continue studying despite her age 50. She believes that learning and learning could be an asset to be more successful in the future. Her success is also the success of everyone in their company. The online interview we had with Ms. Marilou was successful and worthwhile for we had learned so much from her that could help us continued our journey. It was indeed a wonderful experience having a conversation with a remarkably leader. Her experiences are truly motivating and inspirational for us. We admire her work ethics and she is also a role model for someone who wants to be a successful leader for the succeeding years to come. 34 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The completion of this final requirement for our course Leadership and Decision-Making entitled “Thought Leadership Presentation” could not have been possible without the participation and heart pledge support of many people. Archetypes of Leadership One reason the reflection component is often neglected is because of the implicit or takenfor-granted beliefs about leadership that many people have. By their unrecognized and untested nature, implicit beliefs can inadvertently insulate a person from seeing things in new ways and from potential learning. Leadership development can be enhanced by raising such implicit beliefs to conscious awareness and thereby more to thoughtful reflection. One approach, for example, used a variety of art prints to stimulate personal and group reflection on ideal forms of leadership. The prints were used to evoke metaphors of leadership, and ultimately five fundamental archetypes of leadership were identified: Teacher–Mentor The one who cares about developing others and works beside them as a role model. Father–Judge The one who provides oversight, control, moral guidance, and caring protectiveness. Warrior–Knight The one who takes risks and action in a crisis. Revolutionary–Crusader The one who challenges the status quo and guides adaptation. Visionary–Alchemist The one who imagines possibilities that can benefit all members and brings them into reality. C.2. Four Generations According to Zemke Zemke is another researcher who has looked at differences in values across generations and how those value differences affect their approaches to work and leadership. Following is his delineation of four generations of workers, each molded by distinctive experiences during critical developmental periods: • The Veterans (1922–1943): Veterans came of age during the Great Depression and World War II, and they represent a wealth of lore and wisdom. They’ve been a 40 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester stabilizing force in organizations for decades, even if they are prone to digressions about “the good old days.” • The Baby Boomers (1942–1960): These were the postwar babies who came of age during violent social protests, experimentation with new lifestyles, and pervasive questioning of establishment values. But they’re graying now, and they don’t like to think of themselves as “the problem” in the workplace even though they sometimes are. Boomers still have passion about bringing participation, spirit, heart, and humanity to the workplace and office. They’re also concerned about creating a level playing field for all, but they hold far too many meetings for the typical Gen Xer. As the Boomers enter their retirement years, they take with them a work ethic characterized by ambition, an achievement orientation, and organizational loyalty. • The Gen Xers (1961–1981): Gen Xers grew up during the era of the Watergate scandal, the energy crisis, higher divorce rates, MTV, and corporate downsizing; many were latchkey kids. As a group they tend to be technologically savvy, independent, and skeptical of institutions and hierarchy. They are entrepreneurial and they embrace change. Having seen so many of their parents work long and loyally for one company only to lose their jobs to downsizing, Xers don’t believe much in job security; to an Xer, job security comes from having the kinds of skills that make you attractive to an organization. Hence, they tend to be more committed to their vocation than to any specific organization. In fact, the free-agency concept born in professional sports also applies to Xers, who are disposed to stay with an organization until a better offer comes along. Among the challenges they present at work is how to meet their need for feedback despite their dislike of close supervision. Xers also seek balance in their lives more than preceding generations; they work to live rather than live to work. • Millennials (1982–2005): This is your generation, so any generalizations we make here are particularly risky! In general, however, Millennials share an optimism born, perhaps, from having been raised by parents devoted to the task of bringing their generation to adulthood; they are the children of soccer moms and Little League dads. They doubt the wisdom of traditional racial and sexual categorizing—perhaps not unexpected from a generation rich with opportunities like having Internet pen pals in Asia with whom they can interact any time of the day or night. As they move into the 41 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester workplace, Millennials are seeking teamwork, security, and work–life balance. As “digital natives,” Millennials bring to the workplace sharing habits born of extensive experience with social media; their comfort level with transparency of action may well have a profound long-term effect on the workplace. Of more concern, many college professors perceive Millennials to lack drive and a sense of accountability yet still expect positive evaluations despite marginal effort. C.3. Important Leadership Skills for Workplace Success In the article of Doyle (2021), to be an effective leader, you need to be flexible enough to cope-up and adjust to an ever-changing workplace. Along with it is importance of having skills that can greatly help with communicating, motivating, and delegating responsibilities in your team. In connection with these are the ten leadership skills to master. These are the following: 1. Communication - Giving the members of the team the clear overview of business’ goals and objectives. Leaders must be open to employees concerns because listening is an essential key of communicating. 2. Motivation - Leaders must assure to inspire the team to achieve a good quality of effort and members doing their tasks with extra mile. 3. Delegating - Leaders must identify individuals’ skills to delegate tasks effectively. 4. Positivity - Having and demonstrating positivity in the workplace makes everyone feel motivated in doing their tasks. 5. Trustworthiness - Leaders must show how trustworthy they are to their team to avoid having conflicts that might affect the overall performance. 6. Creativity - Creative thinking of leaders makes their employees earn trust to them more. Therefore, a leader should always exercise their way of handling situations with a new approach. 7. Feedback - Feedback is important to be always given to the employees because this shows how hands-on and monitored, they are by their leaders. Feedback must become a tool to make employees do their work better. 42 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester 8. Responsibility - Whether it’s a company’s success or failure, a leader must take the responsibility to face the consequences. This will prove how worthy of a leader he is. 9. Commitment – Leaders must show how committed they are in the tasks they are assigning to their employees. This is very important as it becomes the reason for employees to strengthen their determination on their work. 10. Flexibility – Most importantly, leaders must show and demonstrate how flexible they are to different situations a company might encounter and employees will eventually appreciate and admire their leader. These sets of skills are the crucial for an individual who is really intended to lead an organization. By distinguishing these skills, success will surely come to the organization. Therefore, being a leader is not just a chance, there are a lot of sacrifices and considerations to be made but surely success and prosperity will be reaped. C.4. The Most Important Leadership Competencies, According to Leaders Around the World According to Giles’ article (2016, March 15) being a leader means considering so much in yourself. Most especially is to have a consistent positive mindset in every challenge that will be faced. In the long period of time, the competencies of leadership have been proven to be centered mainly on soft skills and emotional intelligence. Here it is said that in the interviews conducted with 195 people in 30 different organizations globally, it emerged that there are five distinct competencies that are valued by a leader. This includes high ethical standards and providing a safe environment, empowering individuals to self-organize, promoting connection and belonging among employees, open to new ideas and experimentation, and being committed to the professional and intellectual growth of employees. These competencies by most of the leaders we have, are a hard worked competencies that they have acquired in their long experience in their work. Mainly, having these competencies is something to be pursued by an individual who aspires to have the ability to master having the control to empower oneself and especially others in the organization. 43 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester C.5. A Review of Leadership Theories, Principles and Styles and Their Relevance to Educational Management. Management. Leaders are not born but made. To be a good leader, one must have the experience, knowledge, commitment, patience, and most importantly the skill to negotiate and work with others to achieve goals. Good leadership is developed through a never-ending process of selfstudy, education, training, and the accumulation of relevant experience (Bass & Bass, 2008). According to Boulding (1956) in book “The Image: Knowledge in Life and Society”, outlined the general transdisciplinary theory of knowledge and human, social, and organizational behavior. He also stated the characteristics of being a good leader. From the perspective of the employees, leaders comprised everything and should motivates the employees to achieve the objectives of the organization as well as their well-being. Trustworthiness is the key in being the good leader of an organization, trust should be the fundamental manner of all human groups (Lamb & McKee, 2004; Ivancevich, Konopaske, & Matteson, 2007). Leadership involves a big responsibility in achieving goals by applying the available resources (human and material) and ensuring a cohesive and coherent organization in the process (Ololube, 2013). Northouse (2007) and Rowe (2007) described leadership as a process by which an individual influences a group to achieve a common goal. This article contends that effective leadership is crucial to the proper operation and very survival of a non-profit organization. Leadership is the least understood phenomenon here on earth (Burns, in Abbasialiya, 2010). According to researches many different leaderships style has no style that can be considered universal. C.6. Managerial Leadership: Meaning and Styles. Business Management Ideas Effective managing requires leadership and the behavioral functions of managership and leadership and should be segregate because every act of influences has a relevance in the act of leadership. A manager organizes, directs and control activities of the company towards a specific end. A leader on the other hand inspires and trust employees and gets maximum cooperation from them and guides their activities in organized effort. A manager’s leadership behavior is what makes the difference between effective and ineffective organizations. Managerial leadership combines the skills of manager and qualities of a good leader. The concept of this managerial leadership is 44 Course Code: AY: MGT1101 2021 – 2022 Course Title: Term: Leadership and Decision Making 1st Semester about bringing together the managerial and leadership roles. managerial leadership is democratic style, some experts said that mangers should take consideration before deciding how to manage an organization. Also, most effective managers can select their behaviors in each time and primary influenced by their background, knowledge values and experiences. C.7. What is Achievement Orientation? Whiting (2021) suggests that in this situation, a business owner hires two employees, namely Marie and Malou. Marie is frequently late for work, never performs more than the bare minimum, and appears satisfied to work for minimal money. Malou, on the other hand, is always the first one to arrive at work. She is constantly seeking ways to assist where she can, even if it means staying late and working overtime. Malou dreams of one day being a manager or perhaps owning her own business. With this, Katie exemplifies an "achievement orientation." Technically, having the motivation and ambition to achieve goals, succeed in whatever you do, and be successful is what achievement orientation implies. People in this aspect are continually looking for methods to enhance their job and become more efficient. They want to see results and outperform the competition. They are the ones who frequently establish high objectives and standards for themselves and strive hard to meet them. 45
