TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW
Cordero: Good afternoon, Sir we are the students of FEU Manila, and we are going to conduct an
interview entitled thought leadership.
Cordero: Let me remind you that this is a recorded meeting I hope you all agree, do you agree
Mr. Christopher Ian Cordero that this meeting will be recorded.
Interviewee: All right first of all everyone can you hear me OK
Everyone: yes sir
Interviewee: Yes, I do agree that this meeting will be recorded thank you.
Cordero: OK we will make sure that this recorded meeting will be used for educational purposes
only.
Cordero: May I ask Sir what is your name and our organization?
Interviewee: OK Sure first of all, my complete name is Christopher Ian R Cordero, anyway, do
you see me on camera,
Everyone: Yes Sir
Interviewee: OK so yes, my name is Christopher Ian Cordero but at work you can call me, or
they call me Ian for short and the company that I am with now is the Jollibee foods
corporation
Cordero: OK we will make note of that Sir.
Cordero: OK first of all I would like to introduce our topic for today, our topic or our interview
for today is all about thought leadership which means we will talk about
how you maintain your leadership, power, or authority as a leader on how do you handle
your subordinates and your employees and how you handle situations on a
bad day, aside from that the responsibility, your role, responsibility, and more.
Cordero: here is your personal information, now we will start our interview it is
now November 2 and the exact time is 1:14 PM in the afternoon, first question will be
asked by.
Hiballes: Hello and Good afternoon, Mr. Cordero. Thank you for letting your time to join us today.
By the way, I am Stephanie Hiballes, one of your interviewers for the thought leadership

Hiballes: So here is my first question for you, first is how long have you been into this kind of
Work?
Interviewee: Alright, that is a very good question, so I started working in Jollibee Food Corporation
in 2007, so I worked as a service crew for 2 years, so from 2007-2009, While I’m still in
college, I'm a second-year College student. I joined a program, and we will be working for
Jollibee. They will be paying for our tuition fees in school like portions of it, not all but
portions of it will be paid by Jollibee. In return, we can work for Jollibee and we can still
earn something for our allowance for example. So I started working in Jollibee in 2007 and
after graduation way back into 2009 I joined the management team. This is actually my
first work after graduation so I was absorbed by the company since I was a scholar in their
program so I made sure to pass all the exams, pass all the interviews, and the good thing
Thank God I was able to become a management trainee. From there, I was able to join the
managerial position in the Jollibee, Thank you.
Hiballes: Thank you, so my next question is, Is this your first time/second time/third time in a
workplace, or do you have other jobs before?
Interviewee: Officially speaking this is my very first time or this is my very first work after
graduation so during college we have this kind of OJT or on the job training, and that’s
actually not the official work so I can say that it is also a working experience because they
were exposed to though its an office work wherein Philippine Coconut Authority or
“PhilCoA” is one of their offices there. I became like an office assistant, so I stayed there
for a year because it was part of our curriculum wherein we needed to have a minimum of
hours as part of our graduation, so After OJT I was able to work. This is my first work
which is at Jollibee Food Corporation.
Hiballes: Thank you for your answers, Mr. Cordero so I have follow-up questions
Interviewee: Okay, sure

Hiballes: Thank you
Hiballes: So first is how was your experience with the company you are currently working with?
Interviewee: In terms of experience, for me, at first, it’s not that easy because I’m still a trainee I
need to learn a lot of things in order for me to be an official manager so for our training I
think it took like a total of 3 months and that is only for the standard operating procedure
of the company. At first, we were taught on what is the standard procedures that need to
learn as managers because you will notice if you will eat in the Jollibee, you can notice that
all of us are having the same standards in terms of food preparation, service, the cleanliness
so that is what we are mastering for years. Why is it needed to do so? As we all know
Jollibee is the number one fastest fast food in the Philippines and is also trying its best to
become a leader globally in terms of the fast-food industry so if we are eating to a different
Jollibee store whether if it is dine-in or take out or take home or delivery what can we
notice about the food? They are always the same, they are standards to avoid comparing
Jollibee stores to each other. For example, if you have eaten a food that is not tasting good,
you can compare it to other Jollibee. For example, why is this burger not that delicious?
Why is this spaghetti dry? Why is it not delicious? So that is what we are perfecting, we
are mastering the standards for 3 months so we can achieve the vision of the Jollibee, to
serve standard tasting food to all its customers, Thank you.
Hiballes: Thank you, so my second question for you is do you agree that starting to work opens a
lot of investments in time, money, and energy, and a lot of people have failed in their
Work journey? Why or why not?
Interviewee: First of all, of course, working in a company requires investment in time, money, and
energy. I do agree with this thing and a lot of people have failed in their work journey. So
first, let’s divide it into two parts. So the first question is ‘Do you agree that starting to
work opens a lot of investments in time, money, and energy.’ I agree because you cannot
be in a certain position if you will not invest in your time. So when you say time, this
13

pertains to attendance, your punctuality, your everyday routine to work. You need to wake
up early, you need to prepare to go to work, you need to make sure that your uniform is in
good order or in well-groomed so that when you go to work you will be looking perfectly
great and in terms of money, of course, you will also need this because for example, for
your transportation when I’m still working of course I don’t have a way of transportation,
I don’t have a car, a motorcycle so every day I commute to go to work. We can say that
this is also an investment and of course, with the food I eat during work, I also paid for
that. In Jollibee, we have a discount when buying meals. It’s not for free, it’s just discounted
so we need to also have our own money out of our pocket to have a meal or food for
ourselves. And of course, energy, every day you need to be strong, you need to have a
positive outlook in life in order for you to be good at work because I am the manager, you
are the manager, or you are a leader in the store whatever that you do, whatever that
employee sees you doing they will think of you as their role model so you need to be careful
in terms of showing your energy at work. Also, to answer the question ‘A lot of people
have failed in their work journey’ I could say yes because not all employees are getting
their rights so maybe some factor that they are thinking, they are transferring to companies
to companies because they wanted to get maybe a different experience, maybe their friend
is working on this company, or maybe they are looking forward to getting more
compensation in terms of payroll or getting out of the company. So for me, that’s my
thought about this question.
Hiballes: Thank you, so I have follow-up questions again, based on your own opinion, do you
think that it takes skill in becoming successful and skilled?
Interviewee: I agree that in order for you to be skillful, you need to learn a lot of skills while at
work. There are different skills a person can learn and share with their subordinates. First
of all, we have communication skills, some of us have technical skills, some of us have
logical skills, computer skills, and intra or maybe interpersonal skills. “People skills”.
Hiballes: And the second one, what do you think are your competency skills as a leader or
manager?
14
Course Code:
MGT1101
Course Title:
Leadership and Decision Making
AY:
2021 - 2022
Term:
1st Semester
Interviewee: So, based on my experience for like 12 years now or 11 or 12 years now. The most
important skills that a manager should possess as time goes by should be the people skills
because a manager is not important that you know everything, it’s not important that you
know how to do everything, that you know every standard, or you know the information
but rather you should be the people you are managing because without them you cannot
achieve your goals. Remember that we have a saying that “With teamwork, dream works”
so meaning to say with the help of people you can achieve your goal and you can achieve
the end result that you want for the company. So I can say that people’s skills is the very
most important as skilled in my travel or staying in the company because this is the tool or
the skill that touch people's feelings, their motivation, their problem because if you be able
to know their feelings, their problems you can understand, you can give them advice, they
can trust you, they can give you them your loyalty so for me that’s one of the most
important skill that I have learned her on Jollibee .
Hiballes: Thank you, so my last follow-up question is since we are talking about skills I’d like
you to consider what resources, connections, or skills you have that are currently helping
with your goals. Could you tell me a little about them?
Interviewee: Okay, sure. First of all, as a manager, we are balancing the store’s manpower and also
communicating with the customers so for the Jollibee itself you have technical skills and
process skills. In order for you to know if the crew members are doing their job well, you
must also know what they are doing. You should know the standard, the operating
procedures so those are the process and technical skills. Now outside the store or outside
the company that is when you communicate with the customers so that they will be able to
know or you will be able to know what they are feeling about the food or the services of
the staff so that is where interpersonal skills come in. With the interpersonal skills, you are
getting in touch with them, talking about them like a simple “Kamusta po kayo Sir?
Kamusta po kayo Ma’am? Okay po ba yung food namin? Malinis po yung store? Okay po
ba yung crew service?” so that is where interpersonal skills come in. At the end of the day
when we come back to the store, you have your mathematical skills as well because at the
end of the day it’s a business so we need to have good mathematical skills in order for us
15

to know and to achieve our profitability goals. So it is a business every day we have a sales
target. In order for us to reach the sales target or in order for us to achieve the sales target
we need to do some action plans every day in order for us to sell more to the customer. For
example, we also practice persuasive skills so this is the skill that we are teaching our crew
members to do. So how it is being done, so when a customer orders something we make
sure that we complete everything in a meal. For example, the customer order one piece of
chicken joy and a regular soft drink so the task of the crew is to complete everything in a
meal so for example, “Ma’am/Sir would you like to ice tea or fries for a take or have
spaghetti as your take out for your merienda?” something like that. We are developing their
persuasive skills so that they can gain more sales because if the customer is just ordering a
plain meal like one piece of chicken joy and a regular soft drink it is just costing it much
but when the crew will be able to encourage the customer to buy more through the use of
persuasive skills that is the time they can sell more so at the end of the day if all crew
members are doing it then we can achieve our goal. At the end of the day, the process will
be happy because they achieve the sales target. You will be able to encourage your crew
members to sell more so that is where your people’s skills come in because you are
encouraging them to sell more. How? You are giving them some recognition; you are
giving them motivation so every week we have this program wherein the crew sells more
and gets a reward. All the efforts are rewarded, it is a usual relationship wherein you get
to reward your group in return for persuading customers to buy more. So those are the skills
that I was able to hone or master during my 12 years staying in Jollibee.
Galoso:
Good afternoon, sir.
Interviewee:
Good afternoon.
Galoso:
I’m Alyssa Yvonne Galoso and here are my questions.
Interviewee:
Okay, sure.
Galoso:
First is, why do you think the reason an employee starts to work? Is it for passion,
recognition, to be financially stable, or that is what your family is doing since you were
a child?
Interviewee:
Okay. With my experience in Jollibee, in almost 12 years and over, what I can
see most of the time the reasons of the employees applying for is to be financially stable.
As we all know, here in the Philippines, not all families are rich. Not all of us has
16

something to eat on the table so at the very young age, a lot of crew members are applying
for Jollibee even though they are still in college or maybe a high school graduate because
they maybe, they wanted to provide something for their family or maybe they have their
own family already, maybe they have already a child to support, so for me the most
reason that employees are applying or the reason that they are considering is to be
financially stable.
Galoso:
Thank you sir. For the next question, as an employee, do you prefer to manage
the job by yourself, manage the job by your friends and family members, or
manage the job by yourself and hire employees?
Interviewee:
Ok, so For me, maybe I could choose two answers here. I can manage the job
well, with myself, with my family members and also with hired employees, and
friends as well. So, if you would notice there are lots of group of people here that
I mentioned. So, we have family, we have friends, and we also have hired
employees. So, in my career, of course no man is an island. You cannot work by
yourself, so teamwork is very important to achieve a goal in Jollibee cause
everyday you are facing with them almost eight hours or nine hours of your shift.
You are also, of course, before you go to your work, you need to have a good
relationship with your family members. You need their support in order for you
to be motivated every day. Same with your friends. So, of course, when you’re
on your rest day, you can meet them, you can drive with them, so that you can
unwind for example, maybe watching a movie or eating out for example. Those
are like a cycle in your day-to-day work because you cannot be focused on one
thing only because you will feel outburst, or you will feel like you are very
stressed. So, if you just focus on your work, by yourself, you will feel stressed at
the end of the day. So, I can say that, as an employee, I prefer to manage the job
not only by myself but also by my family and friends, and of course, again, the
employees that we have. Because in order for us to achieve our goals, we have
to have a good camaraderie with them like you need to consider them as your
family, when you’re in a single establishment, cause if you will not consider them
as your family or friends, eventually, they would be the first person to stab you
at your back. That’s what we are avoiding. We don’t want the crew members to
17

have this kind of Filipino culture that we can say, “titration ka patalikod” or for
example “pinaplastik ka lang niyan”. That’s what we are avoiding because it
affects the performance of the store. So as much as possible, we need to
communicate with the crew members, specially, with those who are regulars, not
in the sense of “under ka sa kanila” or not in the sense na “hindi mo lang sila
papatulan” but you are doing this for a sense of “pakikisama” so that you can
achieve your goals in one go. At the same time, they can share their thoughts,
they can share their problems, and you can fix it together.
Galoso:
Sir, I have one follow up question. How do you handle your team to keep the
business running smoothly? Could you share to us some of the techniques you
use as the leader?
Interviewee:
With my stay in Jollibee, each of the managers handle the team, specially me
when I’m on shift, we’re doing this kind of, at the start of the shift, we’re doing
this what we called “Morning Game Plan”. So, with the morning game plan, it’s
like the team captain is sharing what needs to be done for that particular day.
How are we about to know what we are going to do? We are basing it to
yesterday’s or even before’s performance. So, for example, yesterday we haven’t
met the sales, because of this because of that, we have a customer’s complaint
because of this, those are being discussed at the Morning Game Plan. We’re
discussing everything, at the aspect of food, for example we have low sales for
burger, because of this and because of that, this will what we need to do, this will
what we need to achieve. So on with service, with cleanliness. So, in other words,
with game planning, you are telling them what happened yesterday, with your
performance, what is the good thing that happened yesterday that we can
continue, and what is not so good thing that we can improve on so that this will
not happen again. At the same time, at the later part of the game plan, we have
what we call this “Kumustahan” so at least we can get to know what happened
to their day. Maybe yesterday, did something happen, what happened in your, for
example, “kumusta ka?”, “kumusta sa bahay niyo?”, “okay ba kayo?”, “okay
ka ba?”. Cause the mindset of these crew members, they can work good or they
can perform well at work if their mentality is good as well. Same with us, if we
18

have something bad happen to us, our day is affected, right? Our performance is
affected by what happened. That is where the people’s skills comes in again so
you get to know what are happening on their life, if it’s a good thing you
recognize it, you commend them, “Congratulations, that’s good to hear. Keep it
up”, something like that, but if it’s not that so good, tap their shoulder, “Don’t
worry. I’ll give you maybe extra time for your break. At least you can take a rest,
or you can eat a good meal or maybe I could give you an ice cream to make your
day”. Because at the end of the day, it’s the people that’s performing so if they
are not motivated, if they are not energized, at the end of the day, it’s still the
business that will be affected, because that will bring a lot of problem in, for
example, if the crew member is not that so good maybe she mixed the foods, she
can gather a lot of service complaints, or the store is not cleaned, because she’s
very tired of cleaning the floors, a lot will be affected. For me, a good
relationship, or with that employees, we need to know them by doing the game
plan. So again, those are the Morning Game Plan and the Kumustuhan at the start
of the shift.
Galoso:
Thank you sir. Those are all my questions.
Interviewee:
Okay, thank you.
Balanditan: Good afternoon, I’m Khayle M. Balanditan, I have a question. A good working
relationship with employees is a must in every workplace situation?
Interviewee: Okay, so, working distributor is a must try in every workplace situation. so
yeah, I do agree with this question because when we say a good working
relationship, this relationship is not the romantic relationship, that maybe a lot of
employees are having. So, this relationship is like the professional relationship tha t
we're pertaining to in Jollibee for in an honor respect with our employees, so we
don't a (pause)
Interviewee: Professional working relationship with employees is a must. So again, as I was
saying this is a relationship with trust as well because in this way you will be able
to know what your crew or what your members are doing or how are they doing at
their job because at the end of the day again the goal here is for them to be proud of
what they're doing, even though they are just crew, for them to follow their dreams

because a lot of crew members as well are working students and some of them are
for their family, some are working students, some are single parents, so those are
where they are getting their motivations from. So, if you have a good relatio nship
with them if you're like asking them, “kamusta kana?” or “how it’s your work?”,
“kamusta bakit ganito yung performance natin?” atleast we will be able to have a
good working relationship with them. So that we can solve the problem. So, it can
provide a resolution to it so at least they're working experience or they're working
their work will not be affected. Thank you.
Balanditan: I have follow up question.
Interviewee: Okay sure.
Balanditan: Are you close with any of your employees? Do you think this can affect your
performance at work?
Interviewee: Well, in terms of persistent have limitations. So, again as I said, there are kinds
of relationships that we don't tolerate in Jollibee. So, those are the romantic or sexual
or we can say romantic relationship because those really affects the job. So, in
Jollibee I do have some close friends even close managers but that's outside of work
it so if you have something to decide on in terms of work of course you will not
consider your friendship for the sake of work. For example, you have something to
tell them, you don't choose the words that you will be saying to your friends.
Example, your ship managers you will have to tell it to them so that all of them will
learn from it. So, we're not having favoritism or we're not having some, in Tagalog
“walang kinikilingan “. For example, so if ever that you have a close friend at work
of course you will treat them professionally inside work but outside work of course
you are still friends you an open up with each other so you can solve your problems
together as well. Thank you.
Balanditan: Thank you.
Balanditan: Here’s My next question, do you delegate authority to your employees?
Interviewee: All right, for your next question delegate authority, yes, this is very important
in Jollibee because in Jollibee as a manager we have a lot of work or things to do at
a daily basis so we're not only focusing on the source process. We also have
community have relation have statistical information towards in customers. We have

to maintain the food to service to cleanliness and sanitation everything is checked.
Because as I said earlier Jollibee is the number one fast food chain in the Philippines.
So, if you remember an incident, wherein we have this what we call chicken sad, we
have this chicken or fried chicken towel, whatever those kinds of issues can be
avoided if we are delegating the authority or the work across all the members so
those are what we are avoiding. Because nowadays for just a single mistake it can
spark in social media, it can go viral it can destroy the reputation of a certain
company. So, maybe Jollibee so if you delegate the authority to your employees,
you are making yourself, you make your less cruppered because if you (pause) this
job for example you're doing all the reports or you're doing all monitoring, you will
be burnt up. So, at the end of the day your time shift is finished. But at the end of
the day your work performance you haven't reached 100. So, delegation of authority
at work is very important. So, you can finish your work at a good example, at a good
time frame. So, I agree to this delegation of authority to the employees.
Balanditan: Thank you.
Abubacar : Good Afternoon, Mr Cordero, I am Norlaila Abubacar and this is my question. In our
university, we have core values of Fortitude, Excellence, or Uprightness. Do you also have
certain values that you and your employees follow and observe in your workplace
operation?
Interviewee: Of course. A lot of companies or I think all of the companies in the Philippines have
corporate values that we are all following. So in Jollibee, we also have core values. So let
me go ahead and share them with all of you. So in Jollibee, we have five values that we
follow religiously on our day to day work. So the first one is customer focus. So customer
focus, this is we provide great tasty food and super valued our customers. We also treat our
customers sincerely and serve them with a wide smile. We also take part in creating
exceptional customer service. Number three is the humility to learn. This is also an
important core value of Jollibee because number one, we seek and welcome feedback. We
acknowledge and learn from our mistakes. We are also acknowledging different forms of
life, so this pertains to respecting the race in terms of skin color, in terms of nationality, in

terms of language. So for example, if you are an Ilocano, or an Bisaya, we have different
accents. And also the Gender of a certain employee. We are hiring employees and
considering LGBTQ+ for example. Those are also part of the humility to listen and learn.
The fourth one is what we call the spirit of family and fun. So we take care of each other.
And of course the last core values would be integrity. We live by honesty and do what is
right all the time. We act as a responsible employee in the company. And we speak our
minds constructively when needed. So this is also pertaining to being honest at work
without seeing you. So we are imparting this to a lot of crew members and also our
production crews because we are a business company. So of course we don’t want
employees to steal money for example. We don’t want our production crew to eat chicken
joy inside the kitchen. We don’t want them to eat hotdogs inside the kitchen or maybe put
the sales in their pockets. So those are what we are avoiding. That’s why, we are a part of
their career in Jollibee, wherein the values are being discussed. So to summarize again, the
core of Jollibee we have customer focus, speed with excellence, humility to listen and learn,
spread family and fun, and integrity. Those are the core values of Jollibee.
Abubacar: So another question is, do you see yourself as a successful and satisfied employee?
Interviewee: Yes, I do see myself that I am a satisfied and a happy employee because Jollibee is
the company that first helped me way back in College. They helped me to graduate in
Polytechnic University of the Philippines in a four year course. So after that, I was able to
practice or train in Jollibee. So I’m doing this service to Jollibee as a Manager because I
want to give back to all the things they give to me. So it’s time for me to replicate the
learning of my mentors because other managers are teaching me the best days in life and
work. So it’s my time to share with other crew members to achieve their dreams, again as
I said, a lot of crew members are also working students, so we are encouraging them that
once they graduate, they also apply for managerial positions and training. So what they
learn in our company, they have to use it to share it to others. So the legacy lives on.
Abubacar: Thank you for that. I have a follow up question. What is your company’s mission and
vision?

Interviewee: Okay sure. For the mission of Jollibee, of course a lot of companies also have
missions. So for the mission, let me just go ahead and share this to all of you. So our mission
in Jollibee, offering great tasting food, brings joy in eating. The goal of Jollibee is not only
offering great tasting food in the Philippines but also a global aspect. So if you notice there
are some Jollibee stores that are opening in some parts of the world in the Middle East, in
Central America, in European Countries, and even in Portugal and Spain. As we all know,
a lot of Filipinos are working or leaving Worldwide. So in order for them to feel that they
are still in the Philippines, this is one of our mission as well, to provide Jollibee across all
the world or across all the countries, so that they would be able to taste the taste of
Jollibee. For them to feel or reminisce the feeling of they are still in the Philippines. So
same with other countries, of course we are trying to combat or to compete with other fast
food chains outside our country. So for example McDonalds, Wendy’s, Poppeyes, in the
US, or KFC, or Burger King. So we are competing with a Filipino fast food chain, which
is Jollibee. So now with our vision. Our vision is to be one of the top 5 restaurant companies
in the world. So all of our friends are trusted and well-loved around the world. So we are
known for consistently great tasting food, recognized for high value in money. So this is
what we are proud of because the pricing we have is kinda affordable, compared to our
competitors. And we also endear, forward, and sincere service to our customers. Admired
for a beautiful source and excellent location. And we are also acknowledged as one of
the best companies in work, in regards to our efficient system, and premises. We have this
called “Alagang Jollibee” or “Alagang Pinoy” as we call it because bringing Jollibee to the
world as if we are bringing Filipino culture to be shared to other foreign countries. As we
all know, even though the Philippines have middle income, we can say that we are having
“Alagang Pinoy”. We are known for our hospitality with our fellow countrymen. So again,
those are our visions in Jollibee, to be one of the top 5 restaurant companies in the world
and the mission is to serve great tasting food, bringing the joy of eating to everyone.
Abubacar: Another follow-up question is how successful are you now or are you financially stable?

Interviewee: At the moment, I can’t say that we are financially stable because we are still working.
So in terms of being successful, it’s not only measured by money or financial means. So
success is like a feeling wherein you can see your efforts at work or contributions to work
is working. You can see your crew members are working well. So when we are getting a
high score in our everyday sales, so for me, that’s what I can consider as successful goal in
life because at the end of the day, the financial capability doesn’t being measured to be
successful but also the crew members for them to produce more or work more for their
own family so that they can have something or they can provide food on their table.
Abubacar: Okay, my last question is do you think your employees are satisfied enough with how
you lead them?
Interviewee: I can say that they are satisfied not only with me but also with other managers because
they are committed to work everyday. The satisfaction level of crew members, you can
easily notice it. For example, they go to work everyday ahead of time. They are not being
late or absent, because you can see if the crew members are not motivated, if they are absent
most of the time, they are giving reasons. For example they are sick even though they are
not, they just don’t want to go to work because they feel heavy inside. So I can say that
they are happy and satisfied because everyday they are still motivated to go to work, we
can see they are sincere with the customers because everyday we are conducting audits, so
at least we can see that they are performing well. So those are what we are doing to see if
the employees are satisfied with their work.
Ramos: Good afternoon, Mr. Cordero. I’m Angel Frankie Ramos and here are my questions.
Ramos: Regardless of situation, your daily attitude in work is being positive?
Interviewee: Regardless of situation, my daily attitude in work is being positive. This should
always be an ask, the answer to this should always be a yes. Why? Because you are the
leader of the company, you are the leader of the store, the crew members your
24

subordinates are looking up to you. Every day they don’t care if you are feeling bad, they
don’t care what your feeling right now. All they wanted to see is they aren’t a leader that
has a positive outlook in life because they will be affected as well, so during our
management meetings we’re having this kind of discussion that we need to show the
crew members that we are always having a positive outlook in life. We need to, even
though we’re having some challenges in life, we don’t want our crew members to see it
while we are at work, why? Because they will be affected, so we need to have a positive
approach in life because this is where they’re getting the energy.
Ramos: Thank you, Sir. I have a follow up question. How do you maintain a positive attitude if
you are having a bad day?
Interviewee: Okay, that’s a very good question, so when you’re having a bad day, of course it’s
very difficult to fake your feeling right? It’s very difficult to pretend that you’re happy
if you’re not, so this is what we are mastering as a manager in Jollibee, so we have this
say, take it until it works so we can avoid faking our feelings so we have to think of some
a motivation, example would be our family, our friends, our pets for example, so we can
have a positive outlook in life. So, when we’re not feeling good we’re just letting our comanagers know that I’m having this kind of problem and then we’re talking about what
can we do to prevent that bad feeling so that the crew wouldn’t see my problem because
I don’t want to be there to be seem that I’m having bad day.
Ramos: Thank you, my next question is what one thing you enjoy most of your work?
Interviewee: Okay, so for me the most thing that I enjoy at work is when we’re having
community relationships as a part of our social contribution to the society, so we’re
looking for example would be the children’s the last time we visited the children’s
hospital so we get to choose who can get the food or the service that we offer in Jollibee
for free. So, for example we’re choosing 50 patients in the hospital even though they
cannot go to Jollibee as a regular people or regular person, we are the one who are going
to the hospital. We are going to an intense place so we’re having some games, we’re
giving them some food, we’re giving them some loot bags and we also let Jollibee
entertain them so at least with this one day of activity it will make or it will be able to

provide happiness to the children’s. Again, one thing I enjoy at work is the community
relations or the comrades we call it but it’s not being done every day so it’s like every
month activity or sometimes quarterly like every three months so we get to choose the
most organization that is like needing to help the most. So, we have either a shelter home,
an orphanage like if you are familiar with the “Tahanan ng walang hagdan” with our
elderly, with our orphanage so these is the most beautiful part of working in Jollibee
because it’s not only about business it’s also sharing to the community what you can so
that they’ll also satisfied and be happy. Thank you.
Ramos: I have follow up question, sir. Do you think you should enjoy your work even though
you have a lot of responsibility?
Interviewee: Actually when you are happy at work you cannot feel that you are stressed or you
can consider that you have a lot of responsibility, so in Jollibee of course. We have to
balance our time so we have to be productive in terms of doing our managerial tasks. We
need to prevent the Mañana habit, if we do have time we finish the job so we can do
other tasks as well because we don’t want to consider “later I will do that because it easy
to do or I will make it later because I’m busy” those are things that we need to avoid.
Ramos: Thank you, sir. That’s all the questions.
Hiballes: Thank you, Sir. Cordero for sharing your inspiring and interesting work experience.
Before we end, I would like to ask for some pieces of advice for aspiring leaders who are
also striving for success.
Interviewee: For you young fellow students, you have to love your employees, your subordinates
in the form of you will provide a professional approach, being respectful to each other so
that you will be able to achieve your goals. In a working environment it is not only you
that is working so you should master not only the technical skills, the communication skills,
and also the most important is the people’s skills so as you become an employee, of course,
you are in the subordinate or we can say might not be able to be the head managerial but
as times goes by, as you step up the ladder you meet to learn of all these things so at least
when you go up to the head manager you all know what to do. The people’s skills are one
of the important ones wherein you are mastering your feelings, aspirations, your
motivations so that they can perform well. At the end of the day the people, the manpower

produces for the company. We don’t have the company if we don’t have the people so we

work and cannot have a good working relationship.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION/PERSONAL PLAN
In this research, I learned that every leader should instill great
values and should be a great role model to his/her employees.
If a leader is lazy, unmotivated, or always grumpy while
working, they might reflect the leader’s attitude, so they have
to be careful of their actions in the workplace. A great leader
should always inspire other people that they have to do their
Abubacar, Norlaila T.
best in everything they do and always motivate them to
accomplish their task in a given time and efficiently.
With regards to the answer of Mr. Cordero, in our interview, I feel great that not only
him, but also other managers in Jollibee, instilled great values. They always prioritize the
satisfaction of not only their employees but also the customers as well. Also, in their company,
they always listen to anyone's opinion especially if they commit mistakes. Based on servant
leadership, while all leaders need to communicate effectively, the focus is often on
communicating to others; but servant leadership puts the emphasis on listening effectively to
others (Hughes et. al, 2008). They also feel empathetic to other people as well. I can relate that
to our topic which is about servant leadership. A servant leader needs to understand others’
feelings as well (p. 152).
So, my overall conclusion, I can say that he’s a great leader. Working for a decade in the
same company is not easy. It requires a lot of experience for you to do that. I can say that he’s a
great leader and it will be a pleasure to work with someone like him. He has amazing principles
not only as a manager but also as an individual. He’s a great leader that we should look up to
and aspire to become in the future. I hope I could be like him one day because he’s really an
inspiring and hard-working person.

I have learned that in leadership it should have a
good relationship between the leader and the follower.
Having a good relationship with a follower can result in
good performance because they have communication
between them. Leaders must have faith in their followers to
Balanditan, Khayle
complete their tasks, as this can motivate them to do their
best on the job. Having a trust can reflect the performance
of the followers because they will become inspired to have a high-quality performance.
Furthermore, when they have trust, they will be able to persuade the follower to perform well
and be satisfied with their job.
Mr. Cordero said that his relationships are like the professional relationships that they
are pertaining to in his company for honor and respect with our employees. He also said that a
relationship based on trust can motivate his employees to achieve the goal, which can reflect on
the performance of his employees to be productive and have good performance. And even if
you have a relationship with the follower, you still need to be professional. Based on what he
said, I can integrate the topic of "the action-observation-reflection model" and the "power and
influence" (McGraaw,2021, p 101), which the action-observation-reflection model enables the
leader to reflect the own personal experiences, examine and assess the effects, and decide
whether or not the performance was effective. So, the leader can also reflect on his actions or
performance for his followers. Nevertheless, power and influence. The leader has the power to
influence the followers through attributes, behavior, values, and beliefs.
To become a great leader, you need to have experience and challenges to be a successful leader
and have leadership skills. Just like Mr. Cordero, he has been working for his company, which is Jollibee,
for more than a decade, so he learned a lot from his experience and the challenges he faced when he was
just starting out in Jollibee that he now applies to his employees. Because of that, it is a big help for him
now to be a great and successful leader. Through the data we collected from Mr. Cordero was very
inspiring and helpful to us, especially to those people who wanted to be a great leader. His story helps
me more to do well to be like him. Also, his example helps me with my future work as well. and be an
inspiration in the future to someone else who will be inspired to be a great leader like him.

I have Learned that leadership is a complex form
of interaction between the Leader, the follower, and the
situation. Furthermore, it requires skills both theoretical
and practical to be considered as a leader, in the case of
our respondent, Mr. Christopher Ian Cordero shows
mastery over the competency skills that is needed to
Cordero, Morgan Jozl R.
maintain a leadership and/or a managerial position.
Mr. Cordero was an exceptional leader, he answered every question with confidence and
sureness, which provided us the necessary data for our interview, he expounded that “people
skills” or communication skills is the most important aspect of leadership in the long run,
because for more than a decade of being in Jollibee he experienced countless situations where
your skills are being developed. He also focused on the topic of creating a good mood and
boosting your organization’s morale. which I can integrate to the topic of “Ingratiation” and
“Referent Power”, wherein the leader uses soft tactics to change an aspect or the target’s
characteristics (Hughes et. al, 2008). And just like our respondent, the improvement of your
referent power will take time because it is difficult to create an atmosphere of trust within your
workers (p.109-123).
In conclusion, the data that was gathered from Mr. Cordero was very informative and
helpful for future leaders of the country, our referent power should be developed so that we will
be able to duplicate Mr. Cordero’s long-term commitment in maintaining his leadership. This
paper will surely help us in the workplace when we have real jobs in the future, because after
all, you will interact with the people that you work with for most of the time, so you need to
develop an interpersonal connection with them in order to have an effective organization.

Good camaraderie in a team is crucial. The performance
of a team does not only depend on good operational plan
but also depends on each followers’ mindset. Leaders
encourage their followers to perform well and decrease the
chances of their followers messing up due to personal
problems. Leaders are there, not only to manage the team,
Alyssa Yvone Galoso
but also to boost employees’ morale. As stated by Hughes
et. al (2008), “Leadership” is both rational and emotional.
A leader uses both rational techniques and emotional
appeals with good balance (p. 7).
Mr. Cordero emphasized maintaining good relationships with everyone including family
and friends. He values his family and friends as they give him support and strength. In his
workplace, the team conducts a Morning Game Plan followed by a “Kumustahan” every start
of the shift. Morning Game Plan is when the team discuss operational factors, whereas
“Kumustahan” is when everyone greets and asks each other how their days went by. Based on
this workplace culture and values Mr. Cordero upholds, I believe he is a Father – Judge type of
leader (Hughes et. al, 2008), knowing that he oversees, is caring, and protective wherein he
consults his followers (p.52).
The main idea I have learned from the interview is that we, as leaders, should inspire our
followers. We should lift up their mood for them to be able to do their jobs properly and with
enthusiasm. It is necessary to do so as our mental health can affect the performance of the team
and subsequently affect the business itself. Positive mental health can increase the sales of a
business as it increases the team’s efficiency, on the other hand, poor mental health will lead to
bad situations and affect the sales of the business.
Mr. Cordero delivered his thoughts thoroughly, explaining what and how a leader is. He
gave a lot of practical situations as examples and gave simple yet effective tips on how to lighten
up someone’s mood. As a logician or INTP-T, it is difficult for me to understand how a
camaraderie is built. His answers gave me a lot of insights into people skills that an employee
would need. This paper would help us be prepared for work.

As we go beyond the interview, Mr. Cordero has the value
of being an Authentic Leader. He believes that having a
positive outlook is important especially at work because as a
leader you are a role model, you set an example for others to
follow so when you do not exhibit this characteristic, you
have the potential to influence your subordinates to lose their
positive mindset because they will reflect on what they have
Hiballes, Stephanie I.
seen to you. According to Peter, P. (2011), a leader is a person
who has an unusual degree of power to project on other
people his shadow or his light. Furthermore, a positive style of leadership tries to push the
boundaries of what appears possible while not abusing the subordinates. It tries to generate
enthusiasm and strengthens the team’s productivity and fulfillment.
I can say that our leader, Mr. Cordero is a very unique leader, he develops the necessary
skills that a leader should possess in more than a decade of working experience in Jollibee. I want
to integrate this topic on building technical competence. According to an article that I have read,
technical competence is defined as the knowledge and abilities required to apply specific technical
principles and information in a job function or role. (Canadian Centre on Substance Use and
Addiction, 2021). Furthermore, under the technical competence, he elaborated the technical,
logical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Logical thinking skills play a key role in the
transmission of creative ideas, the resolution of complicated situations, and the improvement of
decision-making abilities. Good communication skills, on the other hand, are skills that are
important, particularly in the workplace, because they lay the foundation for cooperation and
mutual understanding among others, whereas interpersonal skills affect the morale and
productivity of the entire team. Therefore, mastery of these skills is essential to become a skilled
employee in various fields. All of which are necessary for developing a career.
To sum it up, I have learned that the most important aspect of being a leader is having the
knowledge and skills to guide and lead the team in the direction that can lead everyone to success.
We should set Mr. Cordero as an example of leader who are compassionate to help someone who
is struggling in improving and excelling in their work, it has a big impact on the team because it
inspires the team to work with passion and purpose. As well as it ensures that everyone will be
able to manage the allocation and build stronger and successful teams which in turn leads to a
cohesive work environment.

I have learned that leader should have good
relationship with his/her followers. High quality
relationship between leader and followers can result to
some consequences, such as positive attitude and
behavior at work, great performance and participation
and having a big chance to achieve their goals. Aside to
having ag good relationship I learned that it also
Ramos, Angel Frankie
important that the leader can motivate the followers,
because according to Hughes et. al (2008)., “The best
leaders may be those who can motivate workers to perform at a high level while maintaining an
equally high level of employee engagement and job satisfaction”. If your followers are
motivated that will result of productivity and great performance. (p.317)
Mr. Cordero said that his daily attitude at work is always positive, even though sometimes
he is having a bad day he will pretend that he is happy. He also said that you need to show to
your followers that you are having a positive outlook in life and that attitude can influence your
followers to be happy, positive, and motivated during their work. Based what he said I can
