Based on your personal observation as a businessperson, it is a reality that not everyone is destined to be a successful entrepreneur? Mrs. Kamiya: It is always must to conduct research first before starting a business as well as having the passion and being hands on your business because if not it won’t work at all Mark: Entrepreneurs or business-minded person do business because of what’s in it for yoi? passion for life? Recognition? to primarily to make a living? Or this is what your family is doing since you were a child. Mrs. Kamiya: Yes, as it would give you the leverage to keep on moving forward no matter how hard the adversity could be. Mark: That would be all for my side kaori will be continuing the next questions. Kaori: As a businessperson do you prefer to change the business by yourself? manage the business by yourself? and by family members. Or manage the business by yourself and hire employees. Mrs. Kamiya: For now, it’s really me as you siblings are not yet able to take over yet but still, I’m training you lot to be able to handle how to run the business if ever a chance arises. Kaori: In life as well as in business, nothing is certain or future proof? Do you plan to obtain or have obtained insurance security for your business? Mrs. Kamiya: With the state of my business right now there is no actual need Kaori: Entrepreneurship requires variety of task in operating a business such as marketing, accounting, customer care and others. When you started your business have you earned any of the following in preparation for the business; have earned college degree in business or entrepreneurship? Or but attended business trainings and seminars? Mrs. Kamiya: No, I did not take a business course but instead I did my own research an attended seminars and trainings. The group ends the interview by thanking everyone especially Mrs. Kamiya for making an appearance and participating in the interview. Interview with Mr. Jaynard Orque Jr. The group starts the interview by introducing on another and explaining the goal and reason of the interview Mark: For whom do you wake up for? Mr. Orque: Hello good afternoon, everybody, for me when you say whom do you wake up for is a broad question but my answer to that is it’s for me whom I wake up for as people must always wake up and keep on waking up to be productive and essential Mark: Can you tell me what sign did you saw that you will be successful in this venture? Mr. Orque: At first, I really just want to try and learn and I don’t have any plans at all for registration or long term and just want to help with my future but when I see that it turned out for the better and the ventured boomed, I turned serious in handling it. Mark: Did you see something unique about it that strengthened your resolved to continue? Mr. Orque: For me its unique as many already supported us at the start not unlike the other’s where at first it was really a struggle to start at so for me, I saw that as a sign to continue Mark: What year did you start? Mr. Orque: I started way back 2019 so now its going 3 years already Mark: Engaging in business entails a lot of investments in terms of money, time, and sacrifices. And despite of all these investments, still many have failed in their business ventures. Based on your personal observation as a businessperson, it is a reality that not everyone is destined to be a successful entrepreneur? Mr. Orque: Yes, as business is not really for everyone to apply those traits in the right space is what makes an entrepreneur successful, some people would only invest in money in time but wont sacrifice for it. As they’ve said either you sacrifice for the things you want or the things you want will sacrifice you. The biggest thing I’ve learned in business is that time is the biggest investment, you may have money to invest but not time to put it in place. Mark: Entrepreneurs or business-minded person do business because of what’s in it for yoi? passion for life? Recognition? to primarily to make a living? Or this is what your family is doing since you were a child. Mr. Orque: At first it was really like tripping or nothing but now it falls under passion and primarily to make a live as it’s the most important reason why people do business and it’s aligned with passion for life and the other two is beneath as a person who’s giving his/her all will be able to provide a whole different work ethic. It can also be related to needs and wants because if you’re doing a business just to buy your wants then its not the same when doing it to buy your needs Mark: Entrepreneurship requires variety of task in operating a business such as marketing, accounting, customer care and others. When you started your business have you earned any of the following in preparation for the business: Mr. Orque: Right now I’m still in college and still learning everyday but being a student that didn’t stop me from reaching my dreams. In our society nowadays wherein young people hustling can be seen mostly and I also attended seminars as well as training and I also talked to successful people who guided me to enter the right market to start my venture. I can also consider myself coming from nothing and a delinquent before entering business and finally matured and start living the life I wanted. Mark: As a businessperson do you prefer to change the business by yourself? manage the business by yourself? and by family members. Or manage the business by yourself and hire employees. Mr. Orque: At first, I thought starting with my friends would be great but as times goes by you’ll realize its hard as no everyone has the same mindset and ideas like one another and different wants. So, from 10 members I settle to 5 in the first three months and after that 3 of us left because of failure to meet the quotas needed as we maintain strict responsibility now, we’re down to 2 making the business a partnership with almost the same mindset as I do make it easier to resolved problems. My advice when starting a business start with small group of people in order for you to filter those who are truly committed and everything would follow employees, money as well the responsibilities that comes with it. Mark: Now that you mentioned quotas and roles do you do regular planning for your business? Mr. Orque: Yes, regular planning is very important, actually now the designs to be released for up to the month of February if already planned as we follow a pattern, there was this saying that if you fail to prepare you prepare to fail so the preparation should show you everything you should do should this happen. There was this event where we arrived late so we’ve setup on a table far from the crowd and ended up with zero sales. Now we’ve learned from that and always shows up early already for better position. Being an entrepreneur, you must always be 24 hours ready as you could be called any time of the day especially in handling the business and time can be really tight so being ready and flexible is a must. Mark: In life as well as in business, nothing is certain or future proof? Do you plan to obtain or have obtained insurance security for your business? Mr Orque: Yes, it is really an important factor business insurance as it covers the cost associated with property damaged and liability claims as it could be hard to take money out of your own pocket just to cover for these expenses like legal claims depending on the incident not having insurance can be a devastating scenario. Mark: Thank you okay so for the next set of questions its going to be from my groupmate Jhan Alvyn Guevarra. Jhan: Okay so for the next question in our university, we have core values of Fortitude, Excellence or Uprightness, do you also have certain values that follow and observe in your business operation? Mr. Orque: Actually, I just have two that I keep on mind and also on the lock screen on my phone which is “Work hard and Work Smart”. As said by other just work smart you don’t need to work hard which is wrong because in order for you to work smart you must first work hard and make sure you do both. Jhan: Regardless of situation, my DAILY attitude in business is BEING positive. Mr Orque: Yes, as in business it really hard at first and until now I’m still working on it as being positive can be easily said but hard to do especially in times where everything seems to be hard on you already. So, what I do is I take the negative as a driving force to do better making it a positive lesson that I can learn from Jhan: What is the one thing that you enjoy in your business? Mr. Orque: Its really the journey and I’m not focused on the result as what I really enjoy is the whole process because if you’re only going to focus on the results, you won’t be able to give it you’re all in the process if your’re just in it for the money but if you’re at the right focus then results will better than you think as for me money is just a bonus already what I learn on the process is the most important thing already. Jhan: Thank you. I know forward the interview to Ms. Prejola Jazineth: Do you have plans for expansion? Mr. Orque: Yes, maybe at first it was really not on my mind but now I’m striving for a physical store for my brand and to having different resellers in other countries as well as adding five resellers each in Visayas and Mindanao. Jazineth: At some point did you encounter any thoughts about stopping? Mr. Orques: On the very first release that we’ve had we didn’t really know what to do on the excess money and ended up broke due to buying things we don’t need and at that point I thought about stopping because the money went somewhere else and I also had the fun already but my brother think otherwise and talked to me about lending his money on the account that I do it right because it’s not just me that looks up to the business but there are also others who supports you so it must continue. I used that as my driving force to keep going until I reached a point that I love what I’m doing already not unlike before. Jazineth: That would be all for me. Thank you Mark: Thank you Ms. Prejola Sir Jaynard one last thing before we end this interview word of advice you would give for aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders out there. Mr. Orque: From me it would be don’t listen and be leaded by other people but instead listen to your heart and mind, don’t force things that are really not for you, we all have each other’s lane so one or the other must be for you. Recognize yourself and have faith on what you can do. Mark: Beautiful words of advice from a successful business leader Mr. Jaynard Orque owner of the clothing brand “Bounce Clothing” The interview closes as the group give thanks to Mr. Orque for participating in the interview and wishing him the best for his future endeavors. Front look of Mrs. Kamiya’s Apartment for rent Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan Mark Jeffrey R. Anareta One cannot simply measure success by merely looking at what they can see from the outside as most of the arduous work is done when the viewers are little to none. The idea of achieving something by simply working hard for it would stay as an idea if one does not apply it correctly, working hard is not enough to be the solution for every adversity the same as simply being smart won’t prevent you from losing and experiencing failures. Such is the idea of being intoxicated to false glory and justifying a short-lived success when in fact you could still do more or even strive for betterment, it’s true that not all of us has a helping hand that reaches out to us in every time of need that’s why we must be our own helping hand that can not only support ourselves but also have the capability to extend help to others. While on the process of completion of the paper I was able to see some insights and have deeper understanding on why being constant can be a very important factor in becoming a successful leader, the interviews have broadened my horizons giving me realizations enough to mull over the decisions I’ve been making all this time and tried to compare the mindset that I have with the mind of a legitimate successful leader. It turns out that no matter how hard you aspire for something or how you intense you try to attract it nothing will change if you did not do things the correct way and just continuing to force your way through which will not result to a good outcome. Looking at a different angle there are many ways to imitate what others do in order to to be successful its just that it is not evidently plausible, so what we do is improvise and improve ourselves until we are absolute on the path we’ve chosen before embarking on the journey of creating our own success story. As a working student being flexible is not new to me already but with the realizations I have now I was able to notice my mistakes or the part where I can still make improvements on to be better at it. Having the repertoire of choices gives me the advantage of choosing my decision and deciding on actions that may affect not only me but also the others around me. Now I have the resolved to face the challenges that may come as I knew that being a successful leader comes with rewards that is as heavy at its responsibilities. Christian Emmanuel Esguerra Interviewing entrepreneurs provides me with a new perspective that not all entrepreneurs wear formal clothing. Thus, most of them are simply wearing casual clothes. I have learned in this interview that these entrepreneurs are just ordinary individuals who are to solve their everyday problems just like us. Those people also have different challenges in their day-to-day lives. As we say, "simple, casual, and ordinary" doesn't mean that they are less an entrepreneur. That only means that you don't need to wear fancy dresses or tie to be successful. It is because the key to having a successful business is that you have the urge and passion, even if it's hard at first. I can say that these entrepreneurs are astonishing, knowing that they manage their business so well, even if they faced many circumstances in putting up their business at first. As an aspiring future entrepreneur, I can use all the knowledge I have learned in this interview in my future venture. Also, this inspires me to work hard and be as successful as them in the future. Jonah Leonard Talaver I learned a lot from the interview and I had a lot of realizations from what our interviewee has shared. From the first question " Whom do you wake up for?". Her answer is family and it shows how your “why" can be a huge factor when it comes to the success of your business. Since that can be your driving force to work harder and to be successful. When you don't have a deep reason on why you are doing something you can easily give up on it. The second thing that I have learned is that, when you are planning to do a business venture. You need to be passionate about the kind of business you are planning to do it has to be something you are interested in. Although, when planning a business, it's not all about passion and doing the things you like. There were a lot of people who tried to make a business out of their personal interest or the things they are passionate about but failed. These things happen because they lack preparation. They don't make a plan on how should they properly start their business, not just start but how can they be successful at it. You also need the smarts to do it. You have to think about it thoroughly and have an extreme attention to detail in order to succeed in your business. Kaori Kamiya My groupmates and I interviewed two (2) successful business leaders/owners that we know. While interviewing the three business owners, I can see by their faces that they are true leaders; their composure, politeness, body posture, and, of course, their confidence in answering our questions demonstrate that they are extremely successful. Their responses were really encouraging and filled with wisdom; you can learn a lot from them the moment they open their mouth. When they started sharing narratives about their business, I was quite motivated, especially about what prompted them to start and what they did to make it successful. “Being hands on with your business is a must and it should be you who needs to take full responsibility with it, not your staffs or employees.” this line was mentioned by my mom who is a successful business owner for fifteen (15) years and I agree with what she have mentioned, because being hands on with your business gives you the full update if your business is doing good or not and you yourself can notice which area of your business is not doing well that needs to be addressed or what’s in your business that your customers likes and would like. There is a reason why I chose Business Administration as my major. I want to start my own business in the future, and I told myself that if God helps me achieve my ambition, I'll be hands-on with my business and help as many people as I can, despite the fact that starting a business is not simple. Jazineth Prejola I have learned that if you want to start your business you must listen to your heart and do not let anyone tell you what you should and should not do. One more thing that I learned is that it is better to start your business with just a small group of people, find a partner that has the same perspective and has the same vision as you for your business to be successful. I have learned a lot while doing our interviews, some of them start their business just for fun, and then they did not expect that their business will be blown/successful, and now they love the business that just started for fun. One of the entrepreneurs that we interviewed stated that he is doing his business not for others but for himself, he also says that if you start your business, it is more effective, or you will give your 100% in your business if you are doing it for you to survive and not for the sake of others. I also learned that you must have a record of every transaction that is happening in your business, for your business to be more organized and for it to be successful. The advice that has an impact on me is that when they say that he started his business at the early age of 18, so I thought to myself that I could do it too, and when I do, I will make sure that I will find a partner that is willing to commit in our business and that has the same goal as me. He also advises that you need to be goal-oriented and focus on the process, not on the results because the way you operate and the results you achieve will rapidly alter. You will do more than you ever imagined possible. You will be able to earn more money. You will be able to function at a greater level. Jhan Alvyn Guevarra For a business to grow from its startup to its success, numerous factors are considered by many to be an essential; factors such as a plan, marketing, perseverance, time, and more. I believe that these factors are rooted from the person in charge, the leader, the owner, or the chief executive. It can be said that the attributes possessed by the leader will be possessed by the business itself, a lot can be said, and expected on a business after meeting its leader. As a student under the course of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Major in Marketing Management, I expect myself to learn in the upcoming years, and be able to graduate college as a person capable of building a business, deciding for the business, and being a leader. The activity that brought me satisfaction the most was interviewing people who are leaders of their businesses. Since I was able to hear the experiences they had, the struggles, and celebrations of their businesses; and learn their perspectives with the decisions they took with their business adventure. One of the interviewees was actually a close friend of mine, named Jaynard Orque Jr. A 1st year college student enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas, under the course of Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, and also a co-owner of a business named Bounce. Bounce is a clothing line business built during the year of 2019, and is still growing up until now. He shared a lot of his experiences, decision made, and beliefs he stands by during his business operations. One of the shared experiences that stand out to me was the time they were late during an event, there was an event in Pasig were small businesses were a given the chance to have a booth, and build connections with their customers. However, because they were late for the event the only booths that were available were at the back of the event, an area were the customers are no longer going to. As the day ended, they had no sales, and felt that what they did was disappointing, and was unproductive. He learned a lot from the event, and after that they were always prepared, early, and did not underestimate things that could be an opportunity. One of his beliefs in a business that also stand out to me was that working hard, and working smart comes hand by hand. It is said by many that people should work smarter not harder, but as he said working hard, and smart comes together, and one cannot be missing in handling a business. Working hard, and working smart is a combo for success. I am actually very satisfied with the activity as a whole, it was a different experience for the online class setting. I learned from others, and was able to compare myself from people who are successful in business. I was able to identify, and differentiate the attributes that that I lack, but was crucial to their success. I also learned a lot more about my friend, the mind that he rarely shows to me, but was present during their business operations. I know believe that the attributes that the leaders sows will be harvested in their business Acknowledgement We would like to give our outmost thanks and good will to the invited successful leaders who attended and actively participated in the interview all throughout the activity. We give recognition to the contributions of Mrs. Maria Luningning Kamiya and Mr. Jaynard Orque Jr who provided their myriad of experiences that they encountered along the journey of being a successful leader in each of their ventures. Not only letting us know that the mistakes they make along the way will only stay as a mistake if we one doesn’t learn from it, we would keep the lessons we’ve learned while knowing of what they are before and what they are now after achieving success that many aspires to do so. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the two leaders for giving us the opportunity to have a closer look with their creations which they cherish dearly made from the amalgamation of their hard work and perseverance just to achieve what they’ve dreamed about. This paper would not have been possible without Mrs. Kamiya providing her views and insights how should a person run a successful business, also with the invaluable knowledge Mr. Orque provided on what a mindset of a dreamer and achiever should be in order for them to live the life they want, as well as the proof that not all failures are bad as it can be our fuel to strive harder and continue improving making ourself better than before. We would always remember these invaluable life lessons we’ve learned and make sure to apply it in the future and see to it that we make the most of what we can learn more as knowledge is the one the key factors involved in every mindset and decision that influences success. It can be said that no material thing can surpass the worth of knowledge and the knowledge that our successful leaders Mrs. Kamiya and Mr. Orque provided is also priceless on our end for it is our takeaway in this activity that one’s sacrifices would only be worth it if one did it for the sake of the better.
