I am Sophia Bernadette Remigio, we are from FEU Manila. I am here to conduct an interview about your experiences as a leader. This is a recorded meeting and thus, will be used in our research. Permission to record? Emy: Yes, it is okay. Sophia: Thank you very much. It is now November 11, 2021, 1:49 PM. Before we start the interview, please do introduce yourself and how do you want to be adressed. Emy: I am Esmeralda Remigio, everybody calls me Emy at work. Sophia: What business or organization do you work to? Emy: I work at Jaric Marketing Inc. located at Makati. Sophia: Thank you, Miss Emy. Going on with my first question. How long have you been into this business? Is this your first time getting involved in a business? Emy: No, this is not my first time. In fact, I have been in the business for 20 years. I am a General Manager for 19 years at Jaric Markerting Inc. in a trading business of fast moving consumer goods. We are supplying imported food products to coffee shops, restaurants, commissaries, other food service establishment, and supermarket. Back then, I was working at Rustans, a luxury retail supermarket, when my manager at that time decided to start his own business, he then pirated me and begin working for him and continue working my way up. It was not easy, but it's 20 years, I think it's enough proof that we've succeeded. Abbygail: That is nice! For my second question, how do you handle an issue, which will directly affect your business such as your employees, customers, or suppliers? Emy: Like other business, the biggest issue that we have encountered in the year 2020 and year 2021 is the pandemic. Due to the lockdowns that the government have imposed, business has 8 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester not been good. We suffered a lot of losses. Our inventories have put to waste. Risk of losing the business is evident. However, we have stand and bravely faced the challenges. In these extremely difficult times, true leadership will bring the best in us. Especially being the General Manager, the company and employees are dependent on my capability. The number one trait needed is resiliency. The capacity to recover immediately from difficult situation. Mark Steven: Thank you. So going on with my next question, what are the short or long-term goals that you have set for your business? Emy: In dealing with the current pandemic situation. Our short-term goals would be, first; To rebuild and recover for the Year 2022; second, To cut down on overhead cost by implementing cost cutting measures; and, To increase followers in all social media accounts and E-commerce visitors. For our long-term goals, first would be to expand our business in Visayas and Mindanao; and, To appoint resellers and distributors to expand our distribution reach in the North and South Luzon. Ultimately, our goal is to survive and stay afloat in this ongoing pandemic and give our customers and employeees a sense of security and stability that our business will be progressive in the coming years. Joshua: Thank you. For my next question, how do you promote your business and how do people find out about your business? Emy: Our company’s direction is E-commerce. We are doing a lot of marketing initiatives investing on Social Media platforms. We have converted our website into an online store to cater more to end consumers. To expand our reach and customer engagement, we boost our post thru Facebook and Instagram. We also boost our E-commerce website to gain more visitors. Our Sales personnel join Facebook group and Viber groups to gain customers. Nowadays, social media is life. The proper use of social media helps a lot in boosting our sales, but since we've 9 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester been in the industry for 20 years, we've established a rapport between our business partners, suppliers, and customers that brought about loyalty and trust. Justine: That is very nice. For my next question, is there a defined mission statement for your business that explains why it exists? Emy: Just like other business, we do have a mission and vision statement. Our mission is to source and bring the finest products to our partners. And for the vision, we, the Jaric Marketing, Inc. aims to be the partner of choise in the retail and food service industry. We also have a tagline for our business, Building endless possibilities for every business. With our aim to continuously grow as a company, the key component of our organization is the balance of family tradition and innovation. We do this by offering end-to-end solutions and services, from product sourcing to value-driven product distribution, while carrying the core values and beliefs of our founders, James and Rica de Jesus. Sophia: Thank you very much. For the next question, creating your own business means considering a lot of investments such as money, time, and sacrifices. However, many have failed to create their business, in spite of those investments. Based on your perspective as a business leader, do you think everyone is not destined to be a successful entrepreneur? Why and why not? Emy: No, business is a gamble. You may be successful and maybe on a losing end. First 3 years of a business would be challenging. It will be a test of patience and perseverance. Leadership and management makes a business successful..We lead by example. Being a good leader and making the right decisions will help in building a successful business. There's a lot of risk factors in starting a business, it involves a lot of guts and determination. They say that hardworking people are lucky, I believe in that. Luck may not be for all people but it lands to the most 10 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester hardworking one. And the most important thing is, you should have the brain and the heart to do it. Abbygail: Thank you for that wonderful answer. For my next question, why do you think people do business? What is the sole reason behind the implementation of a business? Emy: Hmmm, for me, people do business in order to survive, to earn, and also to help others. We create business because of something we are passionate about or we feel the need of it. We start a business because it will bring stability to our family and to our future generation. Creating jobs for the people will help them build a better life that leads to a better society. Mark Steven: Thank you. For my next question, as someone who leads a business, do you prefer to manage the business by yourself, with your family members, or do you hire employees? Why and why not? Emy: In my opinion, I prefer to hire employees. It is hard to manage family members because of relationships. Most of the time, relationship hinders business development. Hiring a relative or a family member would compromise the ability to separate personal life with work life. We should leave our personal life from our business. When hiring employees, we focus on people that has a magnetic personality. We want people who are nice and who has a passion for service. We want people who has a smile on their faces and are friendly all the time. We also focus on employees that loves people. We want people who take joy in helping others discover tools that they can use to change the way they live, work, and play. We want people who want to help others achieve their dreams and who want to positively impact the lives of others. Lastly, masters of the product. We want employees who are passionate about the brand and its potential to change lives, and can masterfully educate our target market to be loyal patrons. 11 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Joshua: Thank you for that answer. Since nothing is certain about life in business, do you plan to obtain or have you obtained insurance security for your business? Emy: For our capital assets, trucks and warehouses, we have acquired property insurance in case of fire and destruction. We have also acquired property insurance for our inventories. Justine: Okay, thank you very much. For our last question, at Far Eastern University, we have core values such as; Fortitude, Excellence, and Uprightness, do you also have certain values that follow and observe in your business operation? Emy: Yes, we also have those. Our first value would be strength in diversity. We build trust by respecting every individual or employee. We achieve this through equality and open communication among employees, suppliers, and customers. Second is, dedication to integrity. We maintain the spirit of candor in every step of our service by exhibiting high regard for honesty and practicing fairness. The third is, drive to innovate. We foster continued business growth by maintaining a highly motivated and committed workplace. We value teamwork and support individual growth at the same time. The fourth and last value is commitment to quality. We help to make a positive difference by creating win-win partnerships through unsurpassed service and outstanding products. Sophia: Thank you for that excellent answer, Mrs. Remigio. For the last question, do you keep a journal or record of your daily business operations? Why and why not? Emy: Yes, every business has their own records so we can keep monitoring them. For us, we use Microsoft Excel as our main journal and SAP Accounting Software to where all business transactions are recorded. Abbygail: Thank you. Before we end this interview, what is your take or advice for the young leaders that also strives in being successful? 12 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Emy: For the young and aspiring leaders out there, there's a quote saying that "Leadership is an action, not a position." . You should have the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. To the future leaders of this generation, my advice is to know your priorities and focus on your goals, eyes on the prize, and treat leadership as a responsibility and not a bragging right. Sophia: Once again, thank you very much, Mrs. Remigio for attending us today. Keep on inspiring others and a big goodluck for the future of your company. Emy: You are very welcome. And thank you for having me in this interview. Sophia: It is now 2:04 PM. End of session. Photo Documentation 13 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan A. Remigio, Sophia Bernadette L. In being a successful leader, I realized that being patient is a crucial part of leadership. Based on Mrs. Remigio, "Business is a gamble." There are plenty of risks and challenges that a leader has to experience before they reach their goals. That is why building patience within ourselves is a requirement before we transform into successful and effective leaders. There is no simple recipe in effective leadership (McGraw Hill's Leadership p.30). It is not easy at first; however, we will eventually get there with trust and confidence as we work our way up. Mrs. Remigio further emphasized that starting a business involves guts and determination. We have to be continuously reminded that the road to being a successful leader requires experiences and mistakes, a trial and error if you would; in that way, we can help and coach our future followers in the long run. Furthermore, Mrs. Remigio also stated their business tagline: "Building endless possibilities for every business." This tagline reminded me of the five (5) fundamental archetypes in leadership. I can say that Mrs. Remigio is a Visionary-Alchemist, a leader that is capable of turning the possibilities into a reality and thus, can benefit all members (McGraw Hill's Leadership p.49). Jaric Marketing Inc. flawlessly executes these possibilities by offering end-to-end solutions and services, from product sourcing to value-driven product distribution. While making the possible a reality, they still carry the core values and beliefs of their company. Putting myself in the business leaders' shoes, I agree that being a leader is complicated. As a student who experienced being a leader countless times amidst the pandemic, I had numerous breakdowns. It was my first time being a leader, and I lacked trust in myself. However, with the help of my members, the teamwork of my group, we were able to deliver our tasks, and I was able to lead them. Being a leader does not equate to doing all the duties by yourselves, because with the power of teamwork, everything would succeed in the end. 14 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester B. Casison, Abbygail R. I realize that being a leader in the most challenging position that people take because it requires behavior, and it is not only the skills. It is challenging for every leader because they need to be determined to reach the goal successfully. I have learned that it requires courage despite the trials they have. Leaders should respond differently towards the people and situations and know from the experience (McGraw Hill’s leadership p. 31). As we conducted an interview, I have learned from Mrs. Esmeralda Remigio as a leader that there is suffering that she has been going through. They have a strategy to reach the goals then it is not only the leader who has benefits in it but also the members. To achieve a goal is needed to have passion, motivation, determination, and commitment. In the situation of Mrs. Emeralda Remigio, as she says, it requires patient, which is I agree with because all the problems that have been going through it take a process, and the process makes the situation better. Successful leadership is about influence, not authority. I can see that sometimes I get impatient when I experience it, and if some people do not cooperate with me, then I do not ask for help from them because of impatience, but I realize being does not mean you will do all the tasks. Leaders are not the only ones who move along the way; the members too. Since it is pandemic, I am struggling with how to handle the situation because of an adjustment. 15 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester C. Calsado, Joshua Lawrence E. According to J. Buchan, the role of a great leader is not to give greatness to human beings but to help them extract the greatness they already have inside them. For me, leaders are the ones who can bring the group together as a whole. During our presentation, our leader encourages teamwork. Encouraging and promoting collaboration boosts productivity because it makes us feel less isolated and helps us feel more engaged with our tasks. And also, our leaders provide development opportunities to motivate us to do great things for us to have options for growth and development. Despite my negligence, as a member, they still gave me the chance to become a better member of our group. Overall, our leader keeps her team members motivated and enthusiastic about their work. 16 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester D. Concepcion, Mark Steven Q. The interview has insightful ideas and is very inspiring for those who want to become a leader. The interviewee gave us meaningful answers in sharing her knowledge and wisdom, which inspired us to become great leaders. The quote "Leadership is the interviewee mentioned an action, not a position," and I do believe in this quote since I think that people should want to be a leader not just because of the title but because they want to take action and lead the people. People become leaders because of their work skills. Being a leader means that you are responsible enough to make decisions that will benefit you and your team to be successful. One of the interview points is there will always be a situation that will endanger the success of your business. As a leader, it is your job to come up with solutions to survive in the business world in these challenging times. In crises, leaders should be strong because I believe that leaders are like foundations, and buildings with weak foundations tend to collapse quickly. Creating a backup plan is also a good decision since it can help you have a program that will guide you if something wrong happens so that the situation will not be that difficult. A business can find opportunities in bad conditions to withstand the challenges and succeed with excellent leadership skills. 17 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester E. Miranda, Justine N. I want to be successful someday; it is fascinating to think that I would hear and interact with someone who considers herself successful. Just the thought of learning something that I would use in the future to achieve my goals fascinates me. That is why hearing knowing it firsthand is something that will remain to me. Because, unlike those YouTube videos, this is someone that I can interact. I have learned new things in the process of interviewing and creating the paper. First is that success is continuous work that requires extreme patience and perseverance. Being a leader would mean constant pressure and that your subordinate will always depend on you for your decisions and advice. Persistence is significant in climbing the ladder of success. We must always start at the bottom when climbing as Mrs. Remigio (The one we interviewed) spent years climbing the position and is now a General manager in Jaric Marketing Inc. I must resolve myself and push through the challenge to achieve a better job. I also learned that a leader is the one taking action, that it is not just a position. We can be our very own leaders. It is also essential to have a realizable goal. And that, when starting a business, the first three years is very challenging for that time you are still building and not yet fully bloomed. Confidence in one’s decisions is also crucial because it will affect the business and those who rely on you. We must continually learn and be capable enough to stand when there are challenges, for there are times when we must recover and stay afloat and continue in doing what we do. 18 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Acknowledgment We would like to thank Mrs. Esmeralda L. Remigio for participating on the interview and to our professor Leonardo Cada Jr. for guiding us on our survey guide question before conducting an interview. I thank each of my members for sincerely cooperating that lead us to finish and execute this paper. 19 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester References Hughes R.
