without further ado, let’s start. And uhm… let’s start with the interview question that will
be asked by Ms. Jerica De Guzman and Ms. Jierisha Javier.
INTERVIEW PROPER
Q.1: How long you have been into this kind of business? ______________________. Is
this your first time/second time/third time to venture into entrepreneurship?
Interviewer: Now let’s move on to the interview proper, shall we? Uhm first question po sir
Mark, before anything else we would like to ask how long have you been in this kind of
business? Is it your first time, second time or third time to venture into entrepreneurship po?
Interviewee: Okay, thank you Jerica for that question. First, I would like to say hi to
everyone, and thank you for having me here. Uh, regarding your first question, uh… I’ve
been in the pharmaceutical business for a year, a year now. Uhm…but with regards to,
uhm…venturing into—into entrepreneurship, I could say that this is not the first one. I’ve
also tried going into food business. If you are familiar with the uhm… the prep meals, or
those for going on a diet or working out, I also went into that. But in terms of pharmaceutical
this would be the first.
Q.2 I keep journal or record of my daily business operation?
_____ YES, because it helps me to think for the future of my business.
_____ YES, because I want to have something to share to my employees and family.
_____ NO, I do not keep any journal or record of my daily business operation because it
is not my nature.
_____ NO, I do not keep any journal or record of my daily business operation because I
entrusted it to someone (my employee or member of my family).
Interviewer: Second question po, do you keep a journal to record your daily business
operations po?

Interviewee: Uh yes, of course, oo this is—this is—for me this I very important. I can see
you’ve written choices na here not, why entrepreneurs or business people keep a record ‘no.
So, if I would choose in the selection, I would say na it helps me think for the future of my
business. When it comes to business, one of the most important thing would be to measure.
Sabi nga ‘no, what gets measured gets done. So, if you know where you are currently, it
would be easier. It’s going to give you more concrete action plans and steps to get where
you want to be. So, for example, just to share with you, pagdating sa business it’s about the
daily sales, it can be the transaction count of the business, how any people are buying, what’s
your average daily sales… if you have those data, you will see if your business is growing.
Kasi it’s easy to say na lumalakas ‘yung business or humihina… ang tanong, do I have a
record? For example, kahapon ang bumili k’unti, so you cannot give a specific measure by
saying k’unti. You need to have that number. For example, kahapon I had eighty customers,
today I had 100. So, if you have that record you can easily say, ah the business is growing,
or I’m having more transactions on a daily basis. So yes, it is very important to keep a record
of your daily operation.
Q.3 Entrepreneurs or business-minded person do business because of:
___ passion for life.
___ recognition.
___ primarily to make a living.
___ this is what my family is doing since I was a child.
Note: You may choose 1 or you may rank the choices according to your preference.
Interviewer: Okay, good afternoon po ulit. For the—the third question po, entrepreneur or
business-minded person do business… is it because of your passion for life po, for
recognition or primarily to make a living, or this is what your family is doing since you were
a kid? You may choose one po, or you can rank the choices according to your preferences
po.
Interviewee: Thank you uh, Jierisha tama ba pagkakasabi ko?
Interviewer: Yes po.

Interviewee: Ayan so, this is a very good question ‘no. Uhm… Of course, ‘di ba, you---you
people you are young people starting ‘di ba? Starting your board course, for some you can
be uhm… an employee, or you may---may have your own accounting firm. It’s possible ‘no.
Kung ano ‘yung course you’re taking. But when it comes to starting a business, for me…
ano…you shouldn’t be confined into one or two things lang, it should be many ‘no. But of
course, ang number one drive d’yan is to make a living. That’s the primary ano eh… that’s
the primary reason eh. Parang you don’t open a business para malugi. So, you open a
business so you could earn, and provide for the wants and the needs of your family ‘no. But,
there’s a very---there’s another very important recipe when you want to start a business and
that’s---that is something you should be really passionate about. So, for example, uhm… for
me pharmaceutical ‘no… just to give you an idea, I really don’t have that background---or
educational background when it comes to pharmaceutical. I am---I’m actually a graduate of
supply management. But what made me uh… what made me choose this business, is because
ako personally, I--I love being healthy, and I love providing that ano---that means to make
someone healthy or cure their diseases. I love giving information and teaching people, so
being in this industry, I am—I’m happy with what I am doing plus I am also making a living.
So, there’s so many ano eh… there’s so many reasons, but siguro… I’m not saying that the
others are not good reasons to start a business, but if you are doing a business so that you
will be recognized or if it’s because what your family’s doing since you were child, sooner
or later you will lose that desire to continue a business. So… for me very important dapat
‘yung two. Is it your passion? Do you find a purpose in what you’re doing? And of course,
you do it because you want to bless others.
Q.4: As a businessperson do you prefer to:
_____ mange the business by yourself.
_____ manage the business by yourself and by family members.
_____ mange the business by yourself and hire employees.
Note: You may choose one answer or more than one.

Interviewer: Uhm fourth question po, as a business person, do you prefer to manage the
business by yourself, manage the business by yourself and family members, or manage the
business by yourself and hire employees? Again, you could choose one, or more than one.
Interviewee: Okay, this is another interesting question. Uhm… well… to answer this…
uhm… kailangan mo kasi siya i-define based on the situation, okay. So, there are things you
should manage by yourself, kasi may mga decisions na you---and only you can make ‘no.
But also, there are decisions din naman that you need to consult or ask for advice sa family
members mo, especially if the business is family owned. Kasi that’s also—really a sign of
respect to the people you are working with. Tapos, lastly uhm… it’s---it’s really important
that you manage the business with your employees. Kasi ‘di ba… I don’t know if narinig
niyo na ito, it’s a very old saying but sabi nga “no man is an island” ‘di ba. And ito, ano na
ito…very—very common na ito “teamwork makes the dream work”, and it is really true.
Because if you keep making decisions based on yourself lang, uh… it will… surely be onesided. You can be blinded by your decisions. Kasi people are ano…are emotional beings eh.
Kaya I would agree… baka mayro’n nga sa inyo kapag galit straight mag-English ‘di ba…
nangyayari ba sa inyo ‘yun? Based on emotions ‘yan ‘di ba? Also---you can also say it to
your… your special someone or ano, a close friend of yours na “ayoko na! tama na huwag
na tayo mag-usap.” It’s because emotionally charged ‘no, and that can happen to everyone.
So, what I’m trying to say is if you are looking for success, dapat you seek the counsel of
the wise---and those are people around you. And hindi mo naman sila ipapalibot sa sarili mo
if hindi sila important people. So, it’s very important to ask, kasi nga ‘di mo nakikita lahat
ng ano eh…lahat ng side ng bawat storya. Hindi mo rin nakikita ‘yung side ng bawat bagay.
And you cannot be twenty-four seven and three hundred sixty-five days available, there will
be times when you will be down… and you need those people to manage the business with
you. So, ang isa lang techniques d’yan… kasi ang common vision “papaano ‘pag hindi nila
kaya?”, paano kapag ikaw lang ang may kaya? So babalik ‘yan, sa “how do you train your
people?”. How did you prepare them for instances wherein they need to step up. Uhm… sabi
ko nga sa inyo I love being healthy, kaya I used to train mixed martial arts eh. So ang laging
sinasabi sa’min sa training, uhm… parang… parang ano na eh… “cry in the dojo, so you
will laugh at the battlefield”. So, i-train mo na ‘yung mga kasama mo, or pahirapan mo na

sila or ibigay mo na sa kanila ‘yung hard scenarios… so pagdating ng situation, they will
just laugh at it.
Q.5: What do you think is the advantage of having a family-owned business?
Interviewer: Very well said po sir Mark… and that being said, what do you think is the
advantage of having a family business po?
Interviewee: Advantage? Okay. So, advantage lang pinag-uusapan ‘no? Tama naman ‘di ba?
So sige, advantages would be uhm…if they are your family members and sila ‘yung kasama
mo in starting a business, it means you are on the same page. It means uhm… you are rowing
on the same boat. Puro kayo papunta towards the goal…hindi iba ‘yung plano nila sa plano
mo. So ang advantage don, your decisions would be more in sync. And mas madaling—mas
madaling tanggapin… for example there are indifferences ‘no, but definitely each individual
may opinion ‘yan. But, knowing that the person beside your or that family member that is
working with you wants the same thing, and that is for the business to succeed…definitely,
you will consider kung ano mang i-input nila sa’yo. So those are the advantages, and there’s
a lot more. Also, you will know na may genuine care sila sa business, kasi kasama mo nga
sila nag start. ‘Yung genuine care kasi makukuha mo ‘yan instantly.
Q.6: Is there any helpful application from managing the business that enables you to
have a good connection with your family?
Interviewer: ‘Yung sa sixth question po, I guess nasagot na din po siya sa fifth question, pero
itatanong ko pa rin po na is there any helpful application from managing the business that
enables you to have a good connection with your family?
Interviewee: Okay okay, sige. Uhm… well… tama ka ‘no Jerica medyo nahapyawan na siya.
But what’s different from my answer would be uhm… when you own a business or when
you start a business you should have this what I call “steward mentality”. Alam niyo ba ibig
sabihin ng steward? Narinig niyo na ba yon?... when we say steward, in Tagalog that’s
“tagapangalaga”, okay. Another term would be caretaker, that’s the term eh. So, if you are
17

Course Title:

Term:

the caretaker, uhm… nandon na sa word ‘di ba? You’re taking care of a specific asset, or
let’s say business. It means that the business is not yours, that’s the mindset ‘no.
Pinagkatiwala lang yun sa iyo. So uhm… the business was entrusted to you by the Lord, the
people you work with was entrusted to you by the Lord. Though ang thinking kasi is that
there should be a higher being ‘no, and that hindi siya sayo talaga. Because when you think
na that is yours, ang tendency is you become proud---you become arrogant. Pero when you
know na the business is just entrusted to you, there’s a sense of… responsibility eh. The
more you want to take care, the more you want to prove to the owner that you are doing a
good job. Kasi once na you slack off or take it for granted, or waste the opportunities given
to you, the owner can take it away. So, with that mindset in business, it enables me to also
apply it to the family ‘no. That my wife, my son is entrusted to me and pahiram lang sila and
I am the caretaker. If I don’t take care of them, they can be taken away from me. If you have
that mindset in business, then it will also impact your relationship and your connection with
your family.
Q.7: Is there any useful application from your time as a family leader that has aided
your effectiveness as a company leader?
Interviewer: So, sir for the seventh question po, is there any useful application from your
time as a family leader that has aided your effectiveness as a company leader?
Interviewee: Okay, so this time parang reverse naman ‘no. Well, uhm… as a family leader…
ito, I can see there are men in this group… so si Jose and Daniel. So eventually, you will
have your own family, so… so ano ba role ng isang family leader? A family leader is
someone who is---hindi ‘yan ano dictatorship. It’s not about… I am—I’m the man, the
husband, the father, I will be the one na masusunod. Kasi if that’s the case di sana kumuha
ka na lang ng slaves ‘di ba? ‘Yung susunod lang sa lahat ng sasabihin mo. But you are raising
a family, you are leading a family. Hindi naman ang leader, panay dikta lang… at sabi lang
ng sabi, utos lang ng utos. Kailangan, gumagalaw din siya. Sabi nga ‘di ba, “a good leader
is a good follower”. I usually say to my people—a leader should not tell you what to do,
they’ll show you how it’s done. And a leader is also, a good listener. So, sa family ko, I

listen to my wife, I listen to my father, kapag kailangan ko ng advice nila… I listen to cousins
if they are also in a specific field. So, I don’t just make decisions on my own lang. Definitely,
there are decisions where I don’t just decide… but you should always be ready to listen and
do the legwork. So how will this affect ang pagiging company leader niyo? Dito na papasok
ang servant-leadership. So… if your goal is to also serve the people you work
with…definitely they would love working with you. How is it effective? If your people feel
na you are taking care of them, domino effect na ‘yan. Take care of your people, so they will
take care of the clients and your customers will take care of the business. Kasi ano, they will
go to you regularly, ‘yang business mo magf-flourish ‘yan. So ‘yun ang akin, servantleadership.
Q.8: Is anyone in your family employed by your company? If so, what is the difference
between having an employee who is not related to you and having an employee who is
related to you?
Interviewer: For the eighth question po, is anyone in your family employed by your company
po? If so, what is the difference po between having an employee who is not related to you
and having an employee who is related to you po?
Interviewee: Uh yeah… with our business… Cornerstone Pharmacy, it is actually co-owned
with my wife. Definitely, there’s a big difference ‘no…mahirap i-separate ang emotions sa
professional side… ‘yung ‘yung main difference. As much as you want to make your
business okay, you also want to make sure that your relative or loved one na kasama mo sa
business will also feel okay. Kumbaga, mas madali kasi mag-decide without involving
emotions kapag hindi mo relative eh. Sabi nga nila, there are pros and cons with working
with a relative or a loved one. But, ‘yun ‘yung main difference… the answer would be ‘yung
emotions—'yung emotional attachment. Kasi it’s not easy to just make a plain decision,
especially if you are working with a family member.
Q.9: Does your connection in your family affect your performance as a manager in
your enterprise?

Interviewer: Ninth question po, does your connection in your family affect your performance
as a manager in your enterprise?
Interviewee: Definitely, yes in a positive way. Siguro, very important din na pipiliiin niyo
‘yung family na magiging kapartner niyo in managing a business. Kasi nga sabi ko sa inyo,
there is an emotional attachment. So… if ‘yung nakasama mo na family member sa business
is someone you don’t work well with, it’s gonna be stressful. Siguro, yun ‘yung mga advice
ko sa people na kasama ‘yung pamilya nila sa ‘pagwo-work. For those people na walang
choice, kagaya nga nung nabanggit ko kanina… papaano kapag ‘yung business started bata
ka pa lang… so, family business na siya. On that regards, dun na papasok ‘yung good
communication with the family. So, dapat nase-set aside ‘yung feelings kapag gumagawa
ng business decision. Doon na papasok yung meetings, yearly planning, … business
performance review. So, you continue to set routines like that, in a monthly or annual basis…
therefore, nap-practice niyo ‘yung professionalism within the family. So, I think that is the

your words Mr. Mark, as a basis of our report. To explain further, the information that will
be gathered from our chosen business leaders will be used in a leadership report, and will be

of our semester. Now I’m encouraging everyone po to pleas open their cam. And I would
like to personally ask sir Mark, if you would allow us to record po, thank you po. Now
without further ado, let’s start.
Uhm for the first question
sir Mark, before anything else we would like to ask how long have you been in this kind of

Interviewer: Second question, do you keep a journal to record your daily business
operations?
Interviewee: Uh yes, of course, yes this is—this is—for me this I very important. I can see
you’ve written choices na here not, why entrepreneurs or business people keep a record. So,
if I would choose in the selection, I would say that it helps me think for the future of my
business. When it comes to business, one of the most important thing would be to measure.
As they say, what gets measured gets done. So, if you know where you are currently, it
would be easier. It’s going to give you more concrete action plans and steps to get where
you want to be. So, for example, just to share with you, when it comes to business it’s about
the daily sales, it can be the transaction count of the business, how any people are buying,
what’s your average daily sales… if you have those data, you will see if your business is
growing. Because it’s easy to say that you’re business is growing or it’s not… the question
is, do I have a record? For example, yesterday the sales were low, so you cannot give a
specific measure by saying low. You need to have that number. For example, yesterday I
had eighty customers, today I had 100. So, if you have that record you can easily say, ah the
business is growing, or I’m having more transactions on a daily basis. So, yes, it is very
important to keep a record of your daily operation.
Q.3 Entrepreneurs or business-minded person do business because of:
___ passion for life.
___ recognition.
___ primarily to make a living.
___ this is what my family is doing since I was a child.
Note: You may choose 1 or you may rank the choices according to your preference.

Interviewer: Okay, again, good afternoon. For the—the third question, entrepreneur or
business-minded person do business… is it because of your passion for life, for recognition
or primarily to make a living, or this is what your family is doing since you were a kid? You
may choose one, or you can rank the choices according to your preferences.
Interviewee: Thank you uh, Jierisha did I say it right?
Interviewer: Yes sir.
Interviewee: Okay so, this is a very good question. Uhm… Of course, you---you people you
are young people starting right? Starting your board course, for some you can be uhm… an
employee, or you may---may have your own accounting firm. It is possible. With whatever
course you’re taking. But when it comes to starting a business, for me… uhm…you
shouldn’t be confined into one or two things lang, it should be many. But of course, ang
number one drive is to make a living. That’s the primary thing eh… that’s the primary reason
eh. For instance, you don’t open a business to fail. So, you open a business so you could
earn, and provide for the wants and the needs of your family. But, there’s a very---there’s
another very important recipe when you want to start a business and that’s---that is
something you should be really passionate about. So, for example, uhm… for me
pharmaceutical… just to give you an idea, I really don’t have that background---or
educational background when it comes to pharmaceutical. I am---I’m actually a graduate of
supply management. But what made me uh… what made me choose this business, is because
I personally, I--I love being healthy and I love providing that---that means to make someone
healthy or cure their diseases. I love giving information and teaching people, so being in this
industry, I am—I’m happy with what I am doing plus I am also making a living. So, there’s
so many uhm … there’s so many reasons, but I think… I’m not saying that the others are
not good reasons to start a business, but if you are doing a business so that you will be
recognized or if it’s because what your family’s doing since you were child, sooner or later
you will lose that desire to continue a business. So… for me the two is very important. Is it
your passion? Do you find a purpose in what you’re doing? And of course, you do it because
you want to bless others.

Uhm… well… to answer this…
uhm… you have to define it based on the situation, okay. So, there are things you should
manage by yourself, there are decisions wherein you---and only you can make. But also,
there are decisions din naman that you need to consult or ask for advice from your family
members, especially if the business is family owned. Because that’s also—really a sign of
respect to the people you are working with. Then, lastly uhm… it’s---it’s really important
that you manage the business with your employees. Because… I don’t know if you’ve heard
this or not, it’s a very old saying but as they say “no man is an island”, right? And this,
it’s…very—very common “teamwork makes the dream work”, and it is really true. Because
if you keep making decisions based on yourself lang, uh… it will… surely be one-sided.
You can be blinded by your decisions. Because people are…are emotional beings eh. Which
is why I would agree… I mean it is possible that there are some people here who suddenly
have the ability to speak English when enraged right? It is based on emotions, right? Also--you can also say it to your… your special someone or a close friend of yours that “I can’t
do this anymore! I don’t wanna talk.” It’s because emotionally charged, and that can happen
to everyone. So, what I’m trying to say is if you are looking for success, you should seek the
counsel of the wise---and those are people around you. They wouldn’t be around you if they
weren’t important. So, it’s very important to ask, because you couldn’t see… all the sides of
the story. You cannot also see, all the sides of the story. And you cannot be twenty-four
seven and three hundred sixty-five days available, there will be times when you will be
down… and you need those people to manage the business with you. So, one helpful
technique… because the common vision is “what if they cannot do it?”, what is you are the

only one who can? So it will go back to, “how do you train your people?”. How did you
prepare them for instances wherein they need to step up. Uhm… as I’ve said I love being
healthy, kaya I used to train mixed martial arts eh. So, ang what we always say during
training is uhm… like… like the… “cry in the dojo, so you will laugh at the battlefield”. So,
you train your people, or give them the hard scenarios… so if there is a situation, they will
just laugh at it.
Interviewer: Very well said sir Mark… and that being said, what do you think is the
advantage of having a family business?
Q.5: What do you think is the advantage of having a family-owned business?
Interviewee: Advantage? Okay. We are just talking about advantage, right? So okay,
advantages would be uhm…if they are your family members and you collaborate with them
in starting a business, it means you are on the same page. It means uhm… you are rowing
on the same boat. You are all working towards the goal… with the same plans. So ang
advantage don, your decisions would be more in sync. And it’s easier—it’s easier ti accept…
for example there are indifferences, but definitely each individual have an opinion. But,
knowing that the person beside your or that family member that is working with you wants
the same thing, and that is for the business to succeed…definitely, you will consider
whatever they would contribute. So those are the advantages, and there’s a lot more. Also,
you will know that they have a genuine care in the business, because you were with them
from the start. You’d get genuine care from them instantly.
Q.6: Is there any helpful application from managing the business that enables you to
have a good connection with your family?
Interviewer: For the sixth question , I guess you somehow answered it on the fifth question,
but I’d still ask if there is any helpful application from managing the business that enables
you to have a good connection with your family?
26

Interviewee: Okay okay. Uhm… well… you are right Jerica it was partially answered prior
to this question. But what’s different from my answer would be uhm… when you own a
business or when you start a business you should have this what I call “steward mentality”.
Do you guys know what is steward? Have you heard it before?... when we say steward, in
tagalog that’s “tagapangalaga”, okay. Another term would be caretaker, that’s the term eh.
So, if you are the caretaker, uhm… the thought is already there right? You’re taking care of
a specific asset, or let’s say business. It means that the business is not yours, that’s the
mindset. It was just entrusted to you. So uhm… the business was entrusted to you by the
Lord, the people you work with was entrusted to you by the Lord. Though the mindset we
should have is that there should be a higher being, and that it’s not actually yours. Because
when you think that it is yours, ang tendency is you become proud---you become arrogant.
Pero when you know that the business is just entrusted to you, there’s a sense of…
responsibility eh. The more you want to take care, the more you want to prove to the owner
that you are doing a good job. Because once you slack off or take it for granted, or waste the
opportunities given to you, the owner can take it away. So, with that mindset in business, it
enables me to also apply it to the family. That my wife, my son is entrusted to me and lent
and I am the caretaker. If I don’t take care of them, they can be taken away from me. If you
have that mindset in business, then it will also impact your relationship and your connection
with your family.
Q.7: Is there any useful application from your time as a family leader that has aided
your effectiveness as a company leader?
Interviewer: So, sir for the seventh question, is there any useful application from your time
as a family leader that has aided your effectiveness as a company leader?
Interviewee: Okay, so this time is like a reverse of the prior question. Well, uhm… as a
family leader… here, I can see there are men in this group… so Jose and Daniel. So
eventually, you will have your own family, so… so what is the role of a family leader? A
family leader is someone who is--- it is not a dictatorship. It’s not about… I am—I’m the
man, the husband, the father, I will be the law. Because if that’s the case, the you should’ve

just hired workers, right? One who will obey you all the time. But you are raising a family,
you are leading a family. Leaders should not always dictate… and ask for favors all the time,
make commands all the time. The leader has to make actions. As they say, “a good leader is
a good follower”. I usually say to my people—a leader should not tell you what to do, they’ll
show you how it’s done. And a leader is also, a good listener. So with my family, I listen to
my wife, I listen to my father, when I need their advice… I listen to cousins if they are also
in a specific field. So, I don’t just make decisions on my own. Definitely, there are decisions
where I don’t just decide… but you should always be ready to listen and do the legwork. So
how will this affect your role as a company leader? This is where servant-leadership takes
place. So… if your goal is to also serve the people you work with…definitely they would
love working with you. How is it effective? If your people feel that you are taking care of
them, it enables the business to have a domino effect. Take care of your people, so they will
take care of the clients and your customers will take care of the business. Because, they will
go to you regularly, your business will flourish. So, that’s my take, servant-leadership.
Q.8: Is anyone in your family employed by your company? If so, what is the difference
between having an employee who is not related to you and having an employee who is
related to you?
Interviewer: For the eighth question, is anyone in your family employed by your company?
If so, what is the difference po between having an employee who is not related to you and
having an employee who is related to you?
Interviewee: Uh yeah… with our business… Cornerstone Pharmacy, it is actually co-owned
with my wife. Definitely, there’s a big difference… it’s hard to separate emotions on the
professional side… that’s the main difference. As much as you want to make your business
okay, you also want to make sure that your relative or loved one who’s with you in the
business will also feel okay. Simply, it’s easier to decide without involving emotions with
someone who is not your relative. Like they always say, there are pros and cons with working
with a relative or a loved one. But, that’s the main difference… the answer would be the

emotions—the emotional attachment. Kasi it’s not easy to just make a plain decision,
especially if you are working with a family member.
Q.9: Does your connection in your family affect your performance as a manager in
your enterprise?
Interviewer: Ninth question, does your connection in your family affect your performance
as a manager in your enterprise?
Interviewee: Definitely, yes in a positive way. I think it’s very important to choose a family
member wisely, especially one who will be with you in managing a business. Like what I
have told you, there is an emotional attachment. So… if you are with a family member whom
you don’t work well with, it’s gonna be stressful. I guess that’s my advice for people who
work with family members. For those people who doesn’t have a choice, like what I have
mentioned earlier… what if the business started even way before in the family… so, it’s
already a family business. On that regards, that’s where communication with the family takes
place. So, you should set aside personal feelings once you make a business decision. That’s
where the planning of meetings, yearly planning, … business performance review takes
place. So, you continue to set routines like that, in a monthly or annual basis… therefore,
you are able to practice professionalism within the family. So, I think that is the main…
main impact. For me… it makes a great effect in my performance. Because I consistently
talk to my wife, and we have those conversations, so yeah.
Q.10: What do you think is the most important value a leader of the family and
manager of the business should possess?
Interviewee: Last but not the least po, what do you think is the most important value a leader
of the family and manager of the business should possess?
Interviewer: Okay… so this is a very nice question. When you say kasi most important, we
become limited to one. However, for me… I have this what I call work verse… we have life
verses right… so, this is what I call my work verse. It is Colossians 3:23, it says “whatever

Because if you are working for the Lord who gave you everything, it’s gonna be a good
motivation to give your best every day. But if you are working for people… the recognition
of your boss, colleague or someone you like in the business… there will be times where that
someone will disappoint you. And once that happens, you will lose the motivation to work
really well. But if your mindset is that the Lord is your boss, you will do your best every

eh. Once I… Minsan I can relax konti and ask them to do the… all the job for me, the business
for me ‘no. Ah… this one is the advantage of a family member.
Interviewee: And then the… oh and then… actually, family member and hired employee ‘no,
ah… almost the same. If… what I’m saying, if they are… it’s the way they doing business is
similar to you ‘no, and then it’s okay ‘no. It’s advantage. But if you want to do something
and then they are not the same, mahirap. But if you hire someone, they have to follow…
follow the boss, tama? And if family member, are not following the boss. See *laughing*
they have their ideas, so mahirap ‘no. That’s the disadvantage of the…or the difference of
the family member working for you.
Interviewee: And then sometimes you gonna say “Oh you go!” tama? If it’s your kapatid/your
family member you gonna say like… like the manager you hired “Oh I’ll find another one”
hi- hindi pwede. Ma- mahirap eh, you cannot kick out eh *laughs* tama? So mayro’n ganiyan

than you hire someone. But if something is [unaudible], more trouble. That’s their difference
or the advantage disadvantage, okay.
Q.9: Does your connection in your family affect your performance as a manager in
your enterprise?
Interviewer: Um se-… ah second to the last question po is, does your connection in your
family affect your performance as a manager in your enterprise? I mean, um… can you also
give us an instances po where um… it positively and/or negatively affect your performance
po as a manager in your enterprise?
Interviewee: Yes! Is a… always mayro’n conflict, in my case. Don’t know is everybody like
that, in my case, always mayro’ng conflicts. For example… oh for example the especially
the decision. Ah when… I have a two machine. One is printing, one is slotting ‘no cutting
ganiyan. And then they have a some new machine, pwede na 2 in 1. In this case, you can
bawas almost more tao, or manpower. And then you can bawi… bawi na because you save
the sweldo ‘no of the manpower. So, after you… later on you can bawi na within 2 or 3 years.

Interviewee: But if I like to buy (then) my kapatid ayaw. He don’t like! So mahirap na, tama?
Mayro’ng conflicts ganiyan. *laughs* So… but if you hire manager or some, siyempre they
follow the boss. The boss will buy buy. They always follow… they had to always follow the
boss, tama? That’s the iba of the family members. Okay?
Interviewer: Um if it’s okay to you po na to ask, then how do you cope up po with that
conflicts or like kung hindi po nagkaka-sabay ‘yung um parang… ‘yung decision niyo po
kung hindi naga-agree ‘yung isa. How do you cope with it po?
Interviewee: Ah… if you don’t like to away then you’ll follow them, tama? *laughs* if you
want to do it your way, you have to away with them. So, I said- my elder brother we always

eh, tama? Oh, the kapatid or something if their good is their… what’s the saying…if the other

eh so, I follow what (example) “You don’t like to buy? Okay ayaw na. Bye na” ganiyan na
*laughs* tama?
Interviewee: But if there… one is manager, you have to follow me! Or why you have to out?
*laughs* ‘pag kapatid pala, tama? So, I give way. I surrender *laughs* I have surrendered
ganiyan. *laughs* Okay?
Q.10: What do you think is the most important value a leader of the family and
manager of the business should possess?
Interviewer: Okay, so last question po, um what do you think is the most important value a
leader of the family and manager of the business should possess?
Interviewee: Ah… I think the good value was ano hardworking ganiyan, oo. As a leader, as
a manager ‘no hardworking and then show your ah… you show you’re hardworking ganyan,
oo and then also responsible ganiyan, oo. Sometimes I work with them eh, together. I work
with them together like the janitor ganiyan, the worker yan. The workers (and) collecters,
minsan if you’re working with them they will look down you. *laughs* sometimes ganiyan,
if you be the boss, you be ganiyan, mayaman ganiyan eh ‘no, oo yun. If the people is well

_____ NO, I do not keep any journal or record of my daily business operation because it
is not my nature.
_____ NO, I do not keep any journal or record of my daily business operation because I
entrusted it to someone (my employee or member of my family).
Interviewer: Ah that being said, ah we would like to ask if you keep a journal to record your
daily business operation. Why or why not?
Interviewee: Ahh we have. We hire some accountings and bookkeeping like that to do the
business. To do all the records like that.
Interviewer: Um hello. Ah Good evening!
Interviewee: Ah yeah good evening!

___ passion for life.
___ recognition.
___ primarily to make a living.
___ this is what my family is doing since I was a child.

business is it because of passion for life; for recognition; primarily to make a living; or this
is what your family is doing since you were a kid? Um you may choose one or you may rank
the choices according to your preferences.
Interviewee: Actually, because of our family tradition, everybody they have to try to start a

Q.4: As a businessperson do you prefer to:
_____ mange the business by yourself.
_____ manage the business by yourself and by family members.
_____ mange the business by yourself and hire employees.
Note: You may choose one answer or more than one.
Interviewer: Okay. For the next question, as a business person, do you prefer to manage the
business by yourself; manage the business by yourself and by family members; or manage
the business by yourself and hire employees?
Interviewee: Actually, our business has around 30 people only and then we have
accountings… actually it’s not accounting, bookkeeping! And then we have hired some
accounting company. They do the record, everything and the tax, everything like that.
Interviewee: And then I have to manage the company myself, with my sister and younger
brother to help me. Okay.
Q.5: What do you think is the advantage of having a family-owned business? &
Q.6: Is there any helpful application from managing the business that enables you to
have a good connection with your family?
Interviewer: That being said, then what do you think is the advantage of having a familyowned business?
Interviewee: There are advantages and benefits. It depends if they are a great leader, then it’s
good and then if you get trust then it’s good! But if they do nothing and then the idea is
different, it’s more difficult, so family members.
Interviewee: This one can answer some of the other questions. It depends on the ability of
your family members, right? If they are good and then the idea and the way they do the
business is similar to you, then it’s okay. Otherwise, it is harder to hire somebody than to
hire the family members. Okay. *laughs*

Q.7: Is there any useful application from your time as a family leader that has aided
your effectiveness as a company leader?
Interviewer: Um… I guess question number 6 has already been answered so we now proceed
to question number 7.
Interviewee: Yes… Actually 6 and 7 somehow has the same answer. If the ability of your
family members is good, then they can help you a lot and then if you can trust them then
everything is good, but if their ability (is not good) or you can't trust them then it’s so much
harder. Because usually the disadvantage when you’re making money or the company is
making money, definitely you are to share it with them and then it’s much more, the 13 th
month or something as well, right?
Interviewee: And then if their satisfied, then it’s okay. If they are not satisfied, then many
fight as well. *laughs* that’s the disadvantage of a family member unlike the employee you
hire. Oh if you give them 13th month or a bonus like that, it’s okay na right? They’re already
happy! But for family members it is different, for me. In my business I share 50% with them.
Sometimes there is more noise (or complaints). Plus, they still have their salary, and the plus
50% of the company income. There is also a headache *laughing* okay?
Q.8: Is anyone in your family employed by your company? If so, what is the difference
between having an employee who is not related to you and having an employee who is
related to you?
Interviewer: So, with that being said, we now go for the 8th question. Is anyone in your family
employed by your company? And if so, what is the difference between having an employee
who is not related to you and having an employee who is related to you?
Interviewee: As I told you before my younger sister and my younger brother is helping me
for almost 20 years. And because I’m already a senior, sometimes I can relax for a little bit
and ask them to do the entire job and the business for me. This is also one of the advantages
of a family member. (As an employee)

Interviewee: Actually, family member and hired employee are almost the same. What I’m
saying is, if the way they do business is similar to you then it’s okay. It’s an advantage. But
if you want to do something and then they are not the same, it is difficult. But if you hire
someone, they have to follow the boss, right? But for a family member, they do not follow
the boss. See *laughing* they have their (own) ideas, that’s why it’s hard. That’s the
disadvantage or the difference of the family member working for you.
Interviewee: And then sometimes you gonna say “Oh you go!” right? If it’s your sibling or
your family member, then you’re gonna say “Oh I’ll find another one (manager)” that’s not
possible. It's hard, you can't just kick out *laughs* right? So there is such a disadvantage. It’s
an advantage if they are good, then everything is much good. Better than you hire someone.
But if something is [unaudible], more trouble. That’s their difference or the advantage
disadvantage, okay.
Q.9: Does your connection in your family affect your performance as a manager in
your enterprise?
Interviewer: Second to the last question sir, does your connection in your family affect your
performance as a manager in your enterprise? I mean, can you also give us instances wherein
it positively and/or negatively affects your performance as a manager in your enterprise?
Interviewee: Yes! There is always conflict, in my case. I don’t know if everybody is like that,
but in my case, there is always conflict especially when it comes to decision (making). One
example, I have two machines. One is for printing and one is for slotting or cutting like that,
and then they have a new machine that can be 2 in 1. In this case, you can deduct almost
more people, or manpower and then you can recover because you can save the salary of the
manpower. So later on, you can already recover within 2 or 3 years, right?
Interviewee: But if I like to buy, my brother doesn’t like it. He doesn’t like! That's hard,
right? There are conflicts like that. *laughs* but if you hire a manager, of course they follow
the boss. If the boss wants to buy, then they will always follow. They always had to follow
the boss, right? That’s the difference of the family members. Okay?

want to do it your way, you have to start a fight with them. So, my elder brother and I, we
always teach them “don't fight your sibling” right? Even the Lord said that, right? if their

manager of the business should possess?
Interviewer: Okay, so last question sir, what do you think is the most important value a leader
of the family and manager of the business should possess?
Interviewee: I think the good value was hard work like that, yes. As a hardworking leader
and a manager and then you show that you’re a hardworking leader like that and then also
are responsible as well. Sometimes I work with them, together. I work with them together
like with the janitor, the worker. The workers and collectors, sometimes if you’re working
with them, they will look down on you. *laughs* it’s like that sometimes, if you’ll be the
boss, you be like that, like a rich boss, something like that. If the people is well educated then
the employees will say “ah the boss is very ganiyan so we have to follow him” but some of
the people are not like that, they will say “ah he’s working so I don’t have to work” there are
people like that, that’s why it is very hard. There is good, there is also difficult *laughs*.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER/PERSONAL PLAN
De Guzman, Jerica
The activity requires us to interview a leader about his/her success story in becoming a
leader. I believe that this is a great opportunity for us as students to learn and gain insights into
real-life leadership and experience. After trying to find leaders that would allow virtual
interviews, we, fortunately, had two leaders who agreed to take part in our final requirement.
Moreover, their businesses were both successful family-owned businesses and so we thought
that it would be great since they have a common ground but after we’ve interviewed both, I can
say that the two leaders share commonalities but are still different in some ways – the other
leader instills professionalism setting aside emotional attachments especially when it comes to
deciding with a family member for the business/company. On the other hand, I’ve observed that
the other leader is more on the dictator side when it comes to his employees not related to him,
but when it comes to his family members all he does is to follow and agree to their decisions
because he doesn’t want any conflicts between them. I’ve also learned that keeping track of the
numbers helps you generate ideas on what to do next, it indicates how your business is moving,
therefore, indicates your performance as the leader. As a leader it is normal that you wouldn’t
always figure things out – the reason why you have your people around is to have a different
view, to consider other perspectives and from there, decide which one is the best option to
choose. A leader can’t be a leader without his people, respect and give importance to their
voices, make an effort to have them on the same page as yours. Most importantly, don’t tell
them what to do instead, show them what to do. Overall, our group agrees that the interview was
both insightful and helped us acquire knowledge in leading in real-life scenarios despite their
differences as a leader. I am grateful to the two leaders for participating in this activity and for
my group’s cooperation and coordination that made the completion possible.
Javier, Jierisha
Being a leader is a position that is very hard to attain. It takes a lot of courage and a huge
responsibility to be not just a simple leader but a good and successful leader. A leader identifies
opportunities for improvement and motivates others to strive toward that goal. A leader can also

be seen in different kind of aspects like leader of the family, at work, at a group, and many more
aspects.
• In the process of choosing and identifying a leader
• Interview proper
When we are in the process of identifying a leader that we want to interview, I was kind
of excited that time since we are about to interview professional people or leaders that are very
experienced on being a leader in their own aspects. In the middle of that process I have realized
that what we are going to do and what we are about to hear or learn may definitely benefit us in
our future professions or jobs that we want to take since all of can possibly became a leader in
the future. When we are doing the interview, I was very nervous at first but later on it gradually
disappeared because the people that we interviewed made us comfortable in talking with them.
As I listened to the answers of those we interviewed, I observed that they are very confident on
how they answered each question that our group has prepared. With that observation, I realized
that they can be that confident because they are very knowledgeable about what they’re saying
since they have experienced being a leader at their own enterprise or business.
According to Peters and Haslam (2018), Leadership is a relationship that develops
between leaders and followers who share the belief that they are members of the same social
group. As a student, what I have learned from the interview that we had is that a leader is not
just a position or a title but instead a leader holds a huge responsibility in achieving his/her goals
as well as guiding and encouraging their employee/s to achieve that goal together. Another thing
that I have learned from that interview is that aside from being responsible, it is also very
important to work hard not just sometimes BUT all the times and in everything that we do.
According to Plenge (nd), a leader who is smart but doesn't work hard will eventually reach a
point where he or she fails. A hard-working leader, on the other hand, will find the means to
overcome any obstacles that stand in their way. With this being said, being a hard-working leader
can also be a smart leader that is eager to find solutions and ways to solve any problems or
obstacles that may come their way.

There’s this Bible verse that one of the leaders that we interviewed shared that really
inspires me and enlighten me so much. He called it his “work verse” and it says that “Whatever
you do, work heartily as if you work for the Lord” Colossians 3:23. When I heard this Bible
verse, it motivates me more to give my best in everything that I do with the thought that I am
doing it all for the Lord who gives everything to me and knowing that in whatever I do I know
in my heart that the Lord will never disappoint me unlike people. Also, it is more worth it
receiving recognition from the Lord through his scriptures than the recognition that comes from
other people.
Working in a team or a group is not that easy especially through online since some of us
may not be available at the same time but I realized that group activities like this helps me
improve my communication skills more seeing that I can somehow communicate very well with
my group mates. I realized also that teamwork is really the key point and important aspect when
doing group activities for a reason that I and my group mates are helping each other in doing
our paper as well as having good coordination when we had our interview.
Macalinao, Hannah
Throughout the course of the whole preparation regarding the interviewing of business
leaders, we students were given the opportunity to have the initiative to lead, to become a team
and to coordinate, through this groupwork. It is highly comparative as to how a business works,
and to the shared experiences of our chosen business leaders. In the onset of the interview, we
were immediately given the knowledge and outlook into how the corporate world actually
operated. The incorporation of their firsthand experiences as entrepreneurs and business leaders
accentuated their insights, that provided an even more informative output for our leadership
report, as well as our preceding knowledge regarding the business industry, and the true essence
of leadership within the enterprise. In addition to that, the emphasis on the long and systematic
process as to how they got to where they are now, really inspired us to trust the process of
development as a young adult. Subsequently, through interviewing someone from Baby
Boomers and a Millennial (Mr. Ipapo [33, Generation Y: born between 1982 and 1997], Mr.
Ong [67, Baby Boomers: born between 1946 and 1964] Lumen Learning, n.d.) it also enabled

the provision of influence and awareness to us, their successors in the succeeding business
industry, as to how the conventional and modernized business techniques shall be integrated to
efficiently attain your business goals. Above all, the most important value alluded was teamwork
and coordination. Although both leaders were from different generational era, both highly
valued their responsibility as a leader to listen, respect and work in sync with their employees
and their opinions/suggestions, to effectively attain business goals. Personally, the process of
preparing the report is what occurred to me when listening to them discuss that context of the
interview. As a group, all of us have always been coordinated from the start with the hopes to
attain one thing—a comprehensive leadership report. Altogether, we have shared opinions,
suggestions and cooperation that lead to us successfully completing this outline. I must say, that
it felt good that we had those particular circumstances prior to having the report, because it made
me reflect as to how we have all developed as a young adult, and how we are effectively applying
it in the academe. In conclusion, I firmly believe that apart from the leader, all of the members
in a particular enterprise should have the ability, initiative and capability to lead, lead
themselves, lead their colleagues and lead the business, and it is what makes a successful and
prosperous business venture.
Nazario, Allysa Franz
Despite the prevalent disputes in family-owned businesses, shares, and titles, there are still
families who manage to work with their family members harmoniously. Perhaps, leaders of those
families must have more patience and wider understanding in working with their family members
whom they already know. In this activity, I seized the chance to suggest a different focus and depth
in the view of family leaders in business than just the typical success stories of leaders.
Family-owned businesses appear to have a greater reputation for solidifying the values,
trust, and connections among the family members who hold positions in their respective
companies. In our interview, the interviewees mentioned the advantages and disadvantages of
having a family member in a business circle. Dominantly, they described the advantage of
belonging to a family business as having someone you can trust and understand your goals as a

Similarly, in the lecture by Davis (2014), a lecturer at Harvard Business School, about the
leadership roles in managing a family business, he discusses the difference between leading and
managing. From my previous knowledge of this course, a manager administers while a leader
innovates. In addition, Davis defined leading by identifying the needs of its people and helping
them achieve its common goals through their subjective approaches. While managing, manages
the work of its employees in a more systematic manner in exchange for an expected benefit. With
that in mind, I can discern why leading is used in families and personal relationships and managing
is often used in corporate activities. But what if the family they lead also happens to be the
employees they manage in a different setting?
Because the activity focuses on leadership, I considered the potential benefits and
knowledge that our group could gain. The fact that some of us in the group belong to family-owned
businesses, I realized thereafter that it could be a great chance for everyone to listen to a different
side of leadership stories that may happen to us in the future. Thankfully, our group understood
and agreed after sharing our ideas and suggestions while choosing the leaders we intended to have
a word with. It was exciting, as to how I had seen it. A question such as "how do those leaders
manage to be a business manager and a family leader at the same time?" has inspired me to begin
the draft of our interview questions. I am sure that most groups have focused on the successes and
leadership approaches of their chosen leaders solely within the focus of their positions inside their
companies. But I have heard a lot about it. In fact, I can search for interview speeches and questions
of prominent leaders describing their corporate journey while only a few talks about their
leadership approaches regarding their families as it relates to their business companies. Even
though a leader applies professionalism in a workplace well, their common source of strengths and
weaknesses will still be their family and loved ones, according to Uhlaner et al. (2010). Isn’t it
thrilling to know if their sources of strength happen to be their coworkers? Would it affect the
leadership approaches they apply separately in their home and workplace? Would they be
intimidated or, rather, inspired to make their businesses effective as business leaders?

Days have passed, and the date to interview our intended leaders has happened. At first, I
had no idea of what side their answers would belong to. But after the two interviews with the
managers of family-owned businesses, I stood for a while and related their responses to the wellknown leaders in the country I know who work with their families too, such as Henry Sy for the
prominent SM Malls. Looking at their successful business status has made me ask myself if familyowned businesses can actually produce stable and growing companies through the connections and
trust they hold among their family members. Although if that’s the case, it will not be impossible
then if they treat their non-family employees as part of the family too, which can result in an
inclusive and diverse environment for the staff, affecting the business operations. Similarly,
Chinese entrepreneurs, who are known for their cultural tradition of having a business inheritance
in the family line to secure the business legacy of what their families have started, relate to this
focus. According to the study by Chun Li et al. (2015), which deals with the businesses of Chinese
families, it is said that China consistently holds remarkable records of businesses owned by various
Chinese families. It can also demonstrate why they are ranked first as the top provider of effective
business leaders in a study conducted by Zenger and Folkman (2016) to determine which country
has the most effective leaders in the world. I have no doubt that their strong tradition of having
family-owned businesses continues to this day, based on records of their performance in the
business industry and the effectiveness of their business leaders. Furthermore, Davis has claimed
that he perceives most family leaders as strong managers, which I agree with. Being a family leader
carries longer-term and heavier responsibilities than being a manager, and I do not doubt why they
are used in the setting of managing the situations that they encounter while leading their families.
And this can be another advantage, proving that family leaders inside or outside of their business
enterprises can lead and manage at the same time, whether with the same bloodline or not.
In conclusion to my discerned learning in this activity, I have realized two things that will
help me fulfill a continuous responsibility in the present and future. First would be trust in the
people around me, specifically those who are genuinely willing to accompany me no matter what
happens. Those people, for me, will be my family that teaches me how to be a good follower before
becoming an effective leader as an application in school, organizations I belong to, my circle of
friends, and to the future family that I will lead too. Regardless of the labels, I still treat them all

as my family whom I trust. And second, it would be a reminder that no matter how high I set the
objectives, if I by myself could not muster the courage to meet, hear out, and understand the people
with whom I work on the same page as a follower or a leader, the purpose of having a team could
never reach the vision of having them as a family with harmony.
Ong, Daniel
Based on my observations, while interviewing leaders of a company along with my group
mates, I noticed that a leader usually asks questions to gain ideas, a leader extends his/her hand to
his/her employee like mastering the skill of inspiration. Inspiring coworkers/employees can help
them gain a positive vibe and execute their jobs effectively and efficiently. Leaders are very openminded when it comes to the opinions and suggestions of their employees. Being a leader can
enhance one’s communication skills and create a more supportive workplace environment.
According to Luke Iorio, president and CEO of the Institute for Professional Excellence in
Coaching (IPEC), “An effective leader knows how to show others what is required rather than
simply telling them, and setting clear goals and employee expectations for your team is also critical
to employee success”. Leaders encourage their employees to inquire about their questions and
share their feedback. Having employees involved in the process, the leader may also learn from
them. I also noticed that the leaders we interviewed were from a family-owned business, which
can be described as an interaction between two independents but connected systems, the business,
and the family, both of which have ambiguous limits and varied regulations. Family businesses
can involve a variety of family members in various business roles, such as husband and wife,
parents and children, extended families, and several generations acting as stockholders, board
members, working partners, consultants, and employees. Having a family business necessitates
open lines of communication, the use of strategic planning tools, and the employment of outside
advisers as needed.
I learned a lot about their experiences as leaders, dealing with problems such as
misunderstandings and communication issues with a customer or an employee. They also discuss
how strong communication can lead to success by increasing trust along with your team members

and improving general morale. Learning how to be a good leader can have a huge impact on your
team's, organizations, and personal success. In addition, I also learned about running a familyowned business, such as making decisions and planning ahead of time. I realized that leadership
is a difficult ability to master.
Trespalacioreal, Jego
It is no doubt that managing a business is hard wheter it’s by yourself or with partners.
There will be types of leadership used in certain scenarios and situations. Does leadership have
anything in value? Does it only concern you and to those who surround you?.
Leadership is not just about discovering new ideas and possibilities but also deliberate
planning, which is based on internal and external circumstances and is processed mentally. (Del
Giudice et al., 2014). For me, this statement has a strong point as there much to consider in; staff,
management, customers and possible threats to the business. As being a good leader can have the
ability to influence others despite without having actual power over them. They need to knows
their priority and they need the proper characteristics in order to prosper. proper management, they
know their goals, objectives, vision. Miller (2014) states that Leadership is a complex and multidimensional concept. I agree, it involves the leader him/herself, the followers and the situation.
But shares different meanings to others. I’ve described it as similar to research but instead
leadership has a non-chronological opposed to research as it needs chronological steps/process to
achieve a common goal.
On what I’ve read, It changed the way I viewed everything leadership. As it involves
everything. In fact, In what I do everyday practices leadership such as setting goals, doing what’s
right, appreciating new opportunities and ideas and etc. These can be done with/without followers.
Leadership can also improve and identify to who you are as a person. Leadership involves skills
that can be improved and matured and is used for good and bad. Essential life skills such as being
a good listener, creating value out of everything, developing relationships are a must have skills in
businesses. I don’t agree that leadeship always take places on politics and businesses but in
Everywhere such in schools, inside our homes, interpersonal matters and also by yourself.

Overall, I realized that whether in business, sports, family, religion, or politics, leadership
is the trigger for success or failure. And that Leadership is everywhere and helps get the best
version of who you really are. As a leader, things are going to happen simultaeneously and you
will need to know how to address those matters. Planning ahead and taking the opportunities
