By looking at the information in the HTTP GET and response messages, answer the following questions.
When answering the following questions, you should print out the GET and response messages (see the
introductory Wireshark lab for an explanation of how to do this) and indicate where in the message
you’ve found the information that answers the following questions. When you hand in your assignment,
annotate the output so that it’s clear where in the output you’re getting the information for your
answer (e.g., for our classes, we ask that students markup paper copies with a pen, or annotate
electronic copies with text in a colored font).
1. Is your browser running HTTP version 1.0 or 1.1? What version of HTTP is the server running?
From the above snapshot we can see that the browser version running is HTTP/1.1
2. What languages (if any) does your browser indicate that it can accept to the server?
Yes, there is in the accept language column it is given as en-US, en.
3. What is the IP address of your computer? Of the gaia.cs.umass.edu server?
The IP address of my computer source is 192.168.0.21 and gaia.cs.umass.edu server destination is
128.119.245.12.
4. What is the status code returned from the server to your browser?
The status code is 200 and the status code description is OK.
5. When was the HTML file that you are retrieving last modified at the server?
The HTML file in the server is last modified on Tue, 05 oct 2021 05:59:01 GMT\r\n
6. How many bytes of content are being returned to your browser?
The content-length is 128\r\n that is the number of bytes being returned.
7. By inspecting the raw data in the packet content window, do you see any headers within
the data that are not displayed in the packet-listing window? If so, name one
NO, the raw data is displayed same as there in the packet listing window.

8. Inspect the contents of the first HTTP GET request from your browser to the server. Do you
see an “IF-MODIFIED-SINCE” line in the HTTP GET?
No, we don’t find this field.
9. Inspect the contents of the server response. Did the server explicitly return the contents of
the file? How can you tell?
Yes, the server returns the content of the file. The contents of the file are visible in the below
screenshot.
10. Now inspect the contents of the second HTTP GET request from your browser to the
server. Do you see an “IF-MODIFIED-SINCE:” line in the HTTP GET? If so, what information
follows the “IF-MODIFIED-SINCE:” header?
We can see that in the second HTTP get request the if-modified-since is: Tue 05 oct 2021
05:59:01 GMT\r\n.
11. What is the HTTP status code and phrase returned from the server in response to this
second HTTP GET? Did the server explicitly return the contents of the file? Explain.
From above snapshot we can see that second http request is showing 304 not modified which is
shorter than the first http request containing the complete data of the file.

12. How many HTTP GET request messages did your browser send? Which packet number in
the trace contains the GET message for the Bill or Rights?
The HTTP GET request is only made once and 177 is the packet number which made request.
13. Which packet number in the trace contains the status code and phrase associated with
the response to the HTTP GET request?
From the screenshot above the selected part shows that the number in the trace is 182 that
contains the status code 200 OK and the phrase.
14. What is the status code and phrase in the response?
Status code is 200OK from above screenshot.
15. How many data-containing TCP segments were needed to carry the single HTTP response
and the text of the Bill of Rights?
Data packets are sent in 2 TCP segments to carry a single HTTP response and text.

16. How many HTTP GET request messages did your browser send? To which Internet
addresses were these GET requests sent?
From the below screenshot we can see that there are 3 HTTP GET request messages. The Get
requests were sent to
128.119.245.12 for first image
178.79.137.164 for second image
128.119.245.12
17. Can you tell whether your browser downloaded the two images serially, or whether they
were downloaded from the two web sites in parallel? Explain.
From the screenshot we can see that the images were downloaded serially over separate TCP
connections.

Answer the following questions:
18. What is the server’s response (status code and phrase) in response to the initial HTTP GET
message from your browser?
The status code is 401 and the phrase is unauthorized.
19. When your browser’s sends the HTTP GET message for the second time, what new field is
included in the HTTP GET message?
From the below snapshot we can clearly see that whenever the browser sends the second http
get message the new field i.e.; Authorization is displayed which is basic, username and
password(protected) are entered.
