Symbolism: When something represents or stands for something else
Metaphor: Any comparison that DOES NOT use the words “like” or “as”
Simile: Any comparison that DOES use the words “like” or “as”
Hyperbole: An exaggerated statement or comparison
Personification: Describing things that aren’t people with language normally used to describe
people
Objectification: Describing people with language normally used to describe objects
Idiom: A common saying or phrase. These often don’t make sense when applied literally




Read “Ode to Whataburger.”
Underline or highlight any figurative language you find in the poem.
On a sheet of notebook paper, write the quotes that you found, and label them with one of
the types of figurative language found at the top of this page.
o Some types of figurative language appear more than once in the poem, others may
not appear, at all.
