Entry Test
In order to record the condition, the following work should be carried out before each maintenance and repair:
1.1 Cleaning

A basic cleaning of the unit must be carried out before starting the work.
1.2 Case

Visual check for intactness. Defective parts must be replaced.
1.3 Power supply cable

Visual check for intactness. A defective power supply cable D-244063 must be replaced.
1.4 Water- and air system


Inspection of the water system: Visual inspection of the entire water system for leaks. Search and
repair of leakage according to chapter 3.3.
Inspection of the air system: Visual inspection of the entire air system for leaks. Search and repair of
leakage according to chapter 3.4.
1.5 Handpieces








Visual inspection of the integrity of all handpieces and their hoses.
Checking the function of the electric motor. If the electric motor does not work, troubleshooting and
repair must be carried out in accordance to chapter 3.2.2.
Check for heat development on the motor. If the motor becomes hot during operation, it must be
replaced.
Checking the function of the scaler. If the scaler does not work, troubleshooting and repair must be
carried out in accordance to chapter 3.2.1.
Checking the wear of the used scaler tips using the "EMS Tip Card". If the wear is under minimum, the
tips must be replaced.
Checking the function of the air driven handpieces. If the turbine does not work, troubleshooting and
repair must be carried out in accordance to chapter 3.2.3.
Check the function of the three-way syringe. If the three-way syringe does not work, troubleshooting
and repair must be carried out in accordance to chapter 3.2.4.

Maintenance
2.1 Annual Maintenance


All handpieces and maintenance documents have to be with the unit for maintenance.
In order to guarantee the correct functioning of the device, the following items must be replaced at
each annual maintenance.

2.2 Three-year maintenance


All handpieces and maintenance documents have to be with the unit for maintenance.
In order to guarantee the correct functioning of the device, the following items must be replaced at
each three-yearly maintenance.

Troubleshooting and repair

Before starting any repair, make sure that the unit is Set-up correct and as specified (three-way
syringe, foot pedal, cables, hoses, bottles).
3.1 No function of the unit
3.1.1 Power Supply




Check the power supply of the unit. Check the building plug socket, cable strips and extension cables
for proper function.
Check the power supply cable D-244063 for damage and plug it correctly into the device. If damaged,
the power supply cable must be replaced.
Switch on the unit at the main switch above the power supply cable.
Switch on the pneumatic main switch D-24D206 in the front left underneath the unit.
3.1.2 Fuses


Danger! Before checking the fuses, the unit must be disconnected from the power supply.
Check the two fuses 6.3A D-244064 and replace in case of defect.
3.1.3 Converter

Check the converter. Measuring at the upper two pins (black-white) of the converter: 22VDC, ±2VDC.
Measuring at the lower two pins (black-white) of the converter: 32VDC, ±2VDC. If these values are not
reached, the converter must be replaced.
3.2 Handpieces
3.2.1 Scaler
3.2.1.1

Scaler does not work
Checking the wear of the used scaler tips using the "EMS Tip Card". If the wear is less than minimum,
the tips must be replaced.
Check the scaler tips for correct mounting. Fasten the tips with the EMS CombiTorque wrench to the
maximum torque.
Check that the pressure gauge on the back of the unit indicates a minimum pressure of 3.5 bar when
using the handpiece. Otherwise, fully open the adjustment screw on the control block on the back of
the unit.
Check function with another handpiece. If the new handpiece works, replace old handpiece D-23D004.
Connect another cable to the unit and check for function. If the scaler works with the new cable,
replace cable D-23D008.
Check the function of the electro-pneumatic valve D-24A009. If the valve does not switch when the
scaler is started, it must be replaced.
Check of the converter D-244062. Measuring at the lower two pins (black-white) of the converter:
32VDC, ±2VDC. If these values are not reached, the converter must be replaced.
Replace the electric scaler board D-23D005.

Spray does not work
Check the “Spray ON/OFF” switch on the foot pedal to be switched to “ON”.
Check that the water control valve D-24D204 is set to maximum.
Check the three-way syringe for outcoming water. If no water is coming out, proceed as described in
chapter 3.2.4. If water is coming out, proceed according to the next test point.
Check the quick couplings of the water hoses in the fresh water bottles for correct installation.
Check the filters in the fresh water bottles for contamination. If the filters are dirty, replace the hoses
D-24F073.
Replace water-valve D-24D207.
Replace check- valves D-24D205.
Check the “Spray ON/OFF” switch on the foot pedal. If this no longer switches, it must be replaced.
Spray does not stop
Replace water-valve D-24D207.
Regulation of scaler not possible
Checking the wear of the used scaler tips using the "EMS Tip Card". If the wear is less than minimum,
the tips must be replaced.
Check the scaler tips for correct mounting. Fasten the tips with the EMS CombiTorque wrench to the
maximum torque.
Make sure the handpiece is properly connected to the cable.
Make sure the cable is properly connected to the unit.
Check function with another handpiece. If the new handpiece works, replace the old handpiece
D-23D004.
Connect another cable to the unit and check for function. If the scaler works with the new cable,
replace cable D-23D008.
Turn the potentiometer fully open and check the function. The vibration intensity must change.
Replace potentiometer D-258300 if necessary.
Replace the electric scaler board D-23D005.
3.2.2 Electric Motor
3.2.2.1

Electric motor does not work
Check that the motor speed potentiometer is set to maximum.
Make sure the handpiece is properly connected to the cable.
Make sure the cable is properly connected to the unit.
Check function without, or with another contra-angle handpiece. If the motor works, replace the
contra-angle handpiece.
Check that the pressure gauge on the back of the unit indicates a minimum pressure of 3.5 bar when
using the handpiece. Otherwise, fully open the adjustment screw on the control block on the back of
the unit.
Check function with another handpiece. If the new handpiece works, replace the old handpiece
D-231301.
Connect another cable to the unit and check for function. If the motor works with the new cable,
replace cable D-258201.
Check of the converter D-244062. Measuring at the lower two pins (black-white) of the converter:
32VDC, ±2VDC. If these values are not reached, the converter must be replaced.
Replace the electric board D-231303. Set the microswitches on the new board in the same positions as
they were on the old board.

Spray does not work
Check the “Spray ON/OFF” switch on the foot pedal to be switched to “ON”.
Check that the water and the air control valves D-24D204 are set to maximum.
Check the three-way syringe for outcoming water. If no water is coming out, proceed as described in
chapter 3.2.4. If water is coming out, proceed according to the next test point.
Check the quick couplings of the water hoses in the fresh water bottles for correct installation.
Check the filters in the fresh water bottles for contamination. If the filters are dirty, replace the hoses
D-24F073.
Replace water-valve D-24D207.
Replace check-valve D-24D205.
Check the “Spray ON/OFF” switch on the foot pedal. If this no longer switches, it must be replaced.
Spray does not stop
Replace water-valve D-24D207.
Motor switches on automatically when the scaler is used
Membrane in the control block is leaking and must be replaced. Replace the membrane D-244501.
Motor speed variations
Check function without, or with another contra-angle handpiece. If the motor works correct, replace
the contra-angle handpiece.
If the speed of the electric motor is turned down at the speed potentiometer, but the motor increases
the speed again automatically after some time, the control board D-231303 must be replaced.
Display
If a fault message appears on the display, the Bien-Air operating instructions must be consulted and
followed up with the relevant procedure.
3.2.3 Turbine / Air-driven handpiece

Turbine does not work
Make sure the handpiece is properly connected to the cable.
Make sure the cable is properly connected to the unit.
Check that the pressure gauge on the back of the unit indicates a minimum pressure of 3.5 bar when
using the handpiece. Otherwise, fully open the adjustment screw on the control block on the back of
the unit.
Check the return air filter D-244B01 for free flow and replace if necessary.
Check function with another handpiece. If the new handpiece works, replace the old handpiece.
Connect another cable to the unit and check for function. If the turbine works with the new cable,
replace cable D-24F001.
Light does not work
Check, if the lamp inside the coupling is intact. If necessary, replace the lamp. Attention: Installation
possible in two directions, but function only on one direction. If the new lamp does not work, try the
other direction.
Connect another cable to the unit and check for function. If the light works with the new cable,
replace cable D-24F001.
Replace light module D-258100.

3.2.4 Three-way syringe
3.2.4.1





Three-way syringe does not work
Check the quick couplings of the water hoses in the fresh water bottles for correct installation.
Check the filters in the fresh water bottles for contamination. If the filters are dirty, replace the hoses
D-24F073.
Check the syringe tip D-24H001 for free flow and replace if necessary.
Replace check-valves D-24D205.
Check function of three-way syringe D-24H002 and replace if necessary.
3.3 Water system
3.3.1 Leakage of the water system



Let the compressor run until it has reached the maximum pressure and switches off.
Put each handpiece into operation one after the other using the water spray. While doing so, check all
water-carrying parts of the handpiece for leaks.
Replace leaking parts.
3.3.2 Spray water-bottle overflows

Replace check-valves D-24D205.
3.4 Air system


Check the entire air system (pressure regulator, hoses, valves, foot pedal, foot pedal connections,
three-way syringe connections, buttons on three-way syringe) for leaks with leak detection spray and
replace the leaking parts.

Final Test
