Lake Vostok
Lake Vostok, the 7th largest (by volume) and
4th deepest lake on Earth, is covered by more
than 3,700m of ice, making it the largest
subglacial lake known. Lake Vostok accretion
ice contains nucleic acids from a diverse
set of organisms, including sequences
from anaerobic, aerobic, psychrophilic,
thermophilic, halophilic, alkaliphilic,
acidophilic, aquatic, marine and sedimentinhabiting species. The list of taxa consists
of approximately 94% Bacteria and 6%
