Life in Space: Astrobiology aspects © NASA Ekaterina Faber 2nd year student in the Master’s program «Lunar and Planetary Research» Moscow, October 2021 Astrobiology Main Research Topics: © ESA Timeline in million years from the formation of the Solar System to the appearance and evolution of life on Earth History of Astrobiology discoveries Lake Vostok Lake Vostok, the 7th largest (by volume) and 4th deepest lake on Earth, is covered by more than 3,700m of ice, making it the largest subglacial lake known. Lake Vostok accretion ice contains nucleic acids from a diverse set of organisms, including sequences from anaerobic, aerobic, psychrophilic, thermophilic, halophilic, alkaliphilic, acidophilic, aquatic, marine and sedimentinhabiting species. The list of taxa consists of approximately 94% Bacteria and 6% Eukarya, including over 100 sequences from multicellular Eukarya. Thank You!
