The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Did you know that in the northern Pacific Ocean there is an
enormous area filled with millions of tonnes of rubbish? About
70% of it is made up of plastic. Plastic is dangerous to animals.
It can break up into small pieces, and animals that eat these
pieces are poisoned or killed.
Governments and communities are now trying to make
changes to reduce the rubbish in the Garbage Patch.
Recycling and reusing plastic is the first step. In Hawaii
volunteers regularly organize projects to clean the beaches. It
is impossible to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch; the
area occupied by the rubbish is much too large and moves
around all the time. However, we can and should all recycle
more and reduce waste.

Eco-fashion has become more popular in the last decade.
Well-known brands and designers have started to use
eco-friendly methods of making clothes.
A leading figure in the eco-fashion industry is the British
fashion designer Stella McCartney. She is also an animal
rights campaigner, and she never uses animal fur or
leather in her designs. Another eco-fashion brand is the
French company Veja. They work with local producers
in Brazil where they help to protect workers’ rights and
the environment. The American brand Blue Q use 95%
recycled materials for their clothes.
Eco-fashion Week is a week of events related to ecofashion. It takes place every year in Vancouver in Canada.
The future looks good for eco-fashion, as designers and
manufacturers work together to make beautiful clothes
that don’t have a negative impact on the environment.
