Risk - A measure of the uncertainty surrounding the return

Investment risk- probability of earning less than the
expected return
Total rate of return - The total gain or loss experienced on

dividing the asset’s cash distributions during the period,

Investment 1- Treasury Bills which offer an 8% rate of
return. The T-bills would be bought at a discount and
would return their par value at maturity.
Investment 2- A corporate bond selling at par which
have a 9% coupon and a 10-year maturity. In this case,
your firm will sell the bond at the end of one year.
Therefore, the rate of return will depend by the rate
of interest rate level by the time of selling. A strong
economy will cause rising of interest rates and will
decrease the market value of the bond, while the
opposite would be true if the economy is weak.

 Financial leverage - concerned with the
relationship between the firm’s EBIT and its common stock

leverage), small changes in EBIT produce larger changes in
