Experiment 1 Purpose of Experiment • Introduce the IUPAC nomenclature system • Apply the IUPAC nomenclature system by naming chemical compounds • Interpret chemical composition from IUPAC chemical names NOMENCLATURE OF BINARY COMPOUNDS - 3 Nomenclature Flow Chart HNO2 nitrous acid HCl Hydrochloric acid CO carbon monoxide FeCl2 NaCl 5. Use a few examples to demonstrateiron(II) how the chloride flow chart works for naming compounds. sodium chloride You could even ask students to walk through the process for the class in order to keep the students involved. Some examples you could use are: Important Considerations • Use your document pack worksheet to write out your answers, then input answers on Canvas assignment • Work together with your partner/group, but each individual should submit answers • Each individual will get 2 attempts o After the first attempt, any incorrect answers will be marked, mark these on your hard copy worksheet, and make corrections o When submitting for the second attempt, you only have to submit answers to those marked incorrect • The individual portion must be completed individually, 2 attempts (same as group portion) – get assignment from instructor, complete on worksheet, turn in to instructor for grading • Inputting answers on Canvas o All names must be spelled correctly, one space between first and second word, no capitalization o Formulas should have appropriate chemical symbols with correct capitalization, input number without subscript (but note that when typically writing or typing formulas subscript numbers should be included to be correct!)
