ELUCIDATION OF CONCEPT MISOGYNY Joanna Abbie G. Pantig STEM 12- St. Thomas Aquinas Submitted to: Ms. Marites Dimacali Misogynistic Behavior Gender differences is still a thing up until now even after many years of debating. It is already 21st century but there are men who likes to maintain women's societal standing lower than them. Some people with misogynistic beliefs tend to do unspeakable actions without being aware they are displaying hatred towards women. Hostility to women is considered normal for them not realizing all people are equal, and they are all human beings. Misogyny is a notion that has a significant impact on the lives of all women, and it is necessary to provide a detailed and clear explanation of this subject in order for others to understand it more. (1) Misogyny, or unreasonable contempt against women leading to violence, is a mindset that causes emotional pain and has a severe impact on women's mental and physical health. Leonard (2021) stated that it's frequently caused by masculine-defined religious symbols and stress in the environment. Misogyny is a mentality of being a ‘woman-hater’ and ‘anti-feminist’ thinking that women were born to be hated by men. Misogyny is darker than sexism, because it involves sexual harassment and violence against women, including domestic abuse, as well as gender violence and misogynist terrorism. (2) When hearing misogyny, people always think about sexism. As long as there is sexism, misogyny would stand along with them. Although misogyny is only a form of sexism, they have the same references which is gender discrimination. This ideology circulates about a belief where there is a ‘natural’ role that both genders occupy. It functions as a system to maintain status and difference of power between woman and man. Sexism is like a tree with many branches and one branch of it is misogyny. (3) The word originates from the Greek roots misein ‘to hate’ and gynÄ“ ‘woman’. Misogyny has existed from the beginning of time. It appears in mythology, philosophy, and religion all around the world. The term "misogyny" had never been commonly used before second wave feminism popularized it in the 1970s (Gillard, 2021). Misogyny was used to punish women who refuse to submit. According to Definitions (n.d.), the opposite of misogyny is philogyny. If misogyny contempt to women, philogyny is the love or an excessive admiration of women, which was regarded an illness alongside misogyny in Greek philosophy. (4) Misogyny is not sexism, it is not gender stereotyping, it is not chauvinism. Prasad (2019) stated that in instance like when a woman should not wear certain ‘revealing’ clothes while going out at night — is sexism. But, to make rape jokes like ‘look at her clothes, she asked for it’ — that’s misogyny. Gender stereotyping focuses more on specific roles that a woman and a man should do. Pink looks only good in woman, while blue fits on man. A woman should be at home taking care of house chores, while man works hard labor to earn money, this is gender stereotyping. The differences between misogyny and chauvinism are not complicated. Misogyny is prejudice against woman while chauvinism is extreme eagerness to be superior to other gender and being bias towards their gender. (5) The two types of misogyny that can be seen in behavior and speech. Some men show their hate on women by showing violent behavior to make them submit. Society before considered misogynistic behavior like domestic abuse normal to any household, and sometimes view as a way to display dominance towards their partners. Others use harsh speech to manipulate women by thinking they deserved what they are getting. Men instill a ‘women are just women’ mindset in their spouses for them to be able to cease the urge of women to rebel against them. It is vital to provide a clear and concise explanation of misogyny so that others can better comprehend it because it has a huge impact on the lives of all women. Gender discrimination is still present in this era, although less extreme than before. People are not mindful of what they say, and have different beliefs from each other. No one is less valuable than others because human beings are all equal. Gender is only a physical characteristic of a human. Superiority is just a concept made by humans and not really a requirement to have. After all, regardless of the gender, everyone has the equal right to be explore the depths of their strength and limit.
