Letter to JOHNNY
Directions: Johnny was, without a doubt, one of the characters in The Outsiders that kept
the whole gang together. After his death, members of the gang stuck together, but a
series of other tragic events followed. During this activity, write a letter to Johnny from one
of the other characters in the book (Ponyboy, Darry, Dally, Sodapop, etc.) explaining their
perspective of what happened. Be sure to write with the personality of that character,
too! Lastly, explain what Johnny meant to that person in the conclusion of the letter.

Directions: The characters in The Outsiders fall into
false stereotypes. Using the shoe as your canvas,
sketch or write themes that contradict that stereotype.
For example, Ponyboy is stereotyped as a tough
greaser, but really he enjoys sunsets and reading. If I
chose to use that as an example, I might draw a
sunset or a book.
1. Choose a character from the book who is falsely
stereotyped and “walk a mile in their shoes”.
 Think of what makes the stereotype
incorrect and create a list of reasons.
2. Using the shoe as a canvas, sketch ideas or

from what you’ve learned in the

FIGURATIVE
TIC-TAC-TOE ACTIVITY
language
Using the tic-tac-toe grid below, identify THREE instances of figurative language in the novel, Fish in
a Tree. NOTE: the three that you choose must be three in a row (straight across, up and down, or
diagonal). Write your answers on a separate sheet of notebook paper.
Simile
A simile is a comparison
between two unlike things
using like or as.
TASK: Identify one instance
of simile in the story. Then,
explain the deeper
meaning of the
comparison using
evidence from the text.
Hyperbole
Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition
of consonant sounds at the
beginning of words. EX:
Peter Piper picked a peck
of pickled peppers.
TASK: Choose a
vocabulary term from the
novel. Create a 5-7 line
poem using alliteration.
Metaphor
Imagery
Imagery is language that
appeals to the five senses and
creates a picture for the
reader.
TASK: Choose a paragraph
from the story that has a lot of
imagery. Then, create a chart
and label the five senses that
are used to create the image
for the reader.
Onomatopoeia
A metaphor is a
comparison between two
unlike things without using
like or as.
Onomatopoeia is used when
words whose sounds imitate
or suggest their meaning. Ex:
buzz, pow, boom
TASK: Identify and explain
three separate instances of
hyperbole that exist
throughout the story.
TASK: Identify one instance
of metaphor in the story.
Then, sketch/draw an
illustrated version of the
metaphor in action.
TASK: Identify one instance
of onomatopoeia in the
story. Then, create a
comic strip version of the
scene depicting the sound.
Personification
Symbolism
Idiom
Symbolism is the use of
symbols or objects to
represent ideas or qualities.
Idiom is an expression that
has acquired meaning that
differs from its literal meaning.
EX: It’s raining cats and dogs.
Hyperbole is an obvious
exaggeration, not meant
to be taken literally. EX: I
waited an eternity.
Personification occurs when
the author gives human
qualities to a non-human
(animal, object, idea, etc.)
TASK: Identify one example of
personification in the story.
Then, draw a picture of the
LITERAL meaning and the
FIGURATIVE meaning behind
it.
TASK: Identify one symbol in
the story. Design the front
cover of the book using the
symbol as the main highlight.
Write an explanation of how
the symbol is used, too.
TASK: Identify two instances
of idiom in the story. Then,
explain how using the idiom is
more effective than writing
the literal meaning.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

READING &
APPLYING
DUAL SELF-PORTRAIT
project
In The Outsiders, most of the characters (including Ponyboy) have a tough exterior, but
different emotions and dreams inside. For this project, you will design a dual self-portrait to
present to your classmates. On the left side of the paper, you will draw half of your face
based on how others see you on the outside and on the right side of the paper, you’ll draw
the other half of your face based on what you feel and experience on the inside. Then,
complete the reflection activity that corresponds with your drawing.

Inside
DUAL SELF-PORTRAIT
reflection
Now that you’ve drawn your dual self-portrait, it’s time to reflect! In the space below, explain
each side of your self-portrait. Specifically, discuss how people’s perceptions of a person may
be incorrect, like several of the characters in The Outsiders. Lastly, explain how this is the case
for a character you relate to most in the novel.

LEARNED
essons
Throughout the outsiders, there are several lessons learned by the reader. However, learning these
lessons is important for others who may not have read the book, too! For this activity, you will create a
“lessons learned” tear and take to hang around your classroom or school. Here’s how it works:
1. Think of seven (7) lessons or themes you learned from The Outsiders.
2. Write the lessons you learned on the seven rectangles at the bottom of the page.
3. Decorate the top rectangle by sketching one of the lessons you feel most strongly about.
4. On the top rectangle, you must include directions that explain students should “take and tear a
lesson learned from The Outsiders”. Feel free to use your own words for this part.
5. Hang your “Lessons Learned” take and tear around the classroom or school.
Mirror,
Mirror
In The Outsiders, the characters experience being stereotyped based on their outward
appearance. However, after reading the book, you know that these stereotypes are not
accurate– especially regarding how they perceive themselves. With that being said, your
assignment is to choose a character from The Outsiders and draw their outward reflection
(how others see them) on one side of the mirror and their inward reflection (how they see
themselves) on the opposite side. After you’ve completed the mirror, respond to the following
question using the lines below: How do stereotypes play a significant role in The Outsiders?
How would the story be different if they didn’t exist? Use textual evidence to support.

Piece
GROUP PROJECT
of
Cake
Directions: Chocolate cake is a symbol throughout The Outsiders that not
only represents their losses, but also their togetherness, as they often enjoy
chocolate cake together—even for breakfast. For this group project, you’ll
work with your classmates to create a completed chocolate cake based
on the characters that make the story from The Outsiders whole. Follow the
directions below to successfully complete this project:
1. When given your slice of the cake, determine whether you want to cut
it out first OR design it and then cut it out.
2. Discuss with your teammates which character your slice of pie will
represent. Examples of characters (not limited to): Ponyboy, Darry,
Sodapop, Dally, Johnny, Cherry, etc. You must have eight (8)
characters to complete the cake.
3. Your slice must be decorated to accurately depict that character you
are assigned. You can use symbols from the book, quotes, 3D resources,
digital resources, colored pencils, crayons, markers, etc. to complete
your slice. Creativity is key.
4. After your slice of the cake is completed, get together with your group
and tape your slices together (on the back side). You’ve successfully
created a chocolate cake, which represents the characters in The
Outsiders.
5. Now, it’s time to present your cake to the rest of the class! In 60
seconds, describe your portion of the cake– for a total of an 8 minute
presentation PER GROUP.
