Introduction of
Plant Layout
Plant layout is the overall arrangement of the
production processes, store room, stock room,
and toolroom, material handling equipment,
employee services & all other accessories
required for facilitating the production in the
factory.
Plant layout is a plan of the most effective
arrangement of the physical facilities &
manpower for the manufacturing of product.
According to F.G.Moore:
Definition of
Plant Layout
“A good layout is one, which allow
materials rapidly & directly for
processing. This reduces transport
handling, clerical & other costs down
per unit, space requirements are
minimized & it reduces idle machine &
idle man time”

The product layout is the type we
commonly associate with the mass
production of goods.
It is typical of the assembly lines for
automobiles, refrigerators, washing
machines & so forth.

In process layout, the type of operational
characteristics of manufacturing equipment is
the determining factors in the arrangement of
the factory.

such plants are heat treating plant, finishing
rooms, painting assembly floors etc.
Such a layout is particularly useful where
volume of manufacturing is lower & variety of
job is great.

This type of layout is used in manufacturing
huge aircrafts, ships, vessels, etc. as the
product material is too heavy

This type of layout was very common before the
industrial revolution, but now it is out of
fashion.
