Communication
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Empowerment Technologies – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery
Mode (ADM) Module on ICT in the Context of Global Communication!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:
Welcome to the Empowerment Technologies – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery
Mode (ADM) Module on ICT in the Context of Global Communication!
Information Communications Technology (ICT) is an umbrella term that
includes any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television,
cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and
so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such
as videoconferencing and distance learning. ICTs are often spoken of in a particular
context, such as ICTs in education, health care, or libraries. The term is somewhat
more common outside of the United States. It may also be defined as, Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT or ICTs) are digital forms of communication
including tools available on the Internet, such as blogging and email, as well as
computer software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Word (Department of
Education 2016). There are a lot of mobile applications in the market that are
commonly used in everyday lives, most probably in communication.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You

Notes to the Teacher
This module aims to prepare the students to be knowledgeable
in ICT in the context of global communication in our society’s
new normal state. It also empowers the students to be literate
on how to use digital tools without compromising their private
information.
What’s New
Make a video call to your teacher. First, make sure that your calling device
has already a video call app installed in it. Second, you need to have an internet
access. Connection to the internet can come from Wi-Fi or cellular data. Your calling
device can be a cellular phone, tablet or a computer with a front camera since you
are going to make a video call. Video call app can be Facebook Messenger, Viber,
Facetime, Skype, Hangout or Whatsapp. It should be the same app use by the
person that you intend to call. Facetime is best for iPhones or iOS devices, unlike
other video call apps that can be run in Android devices.
What is It
ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through
telecommunications. It focuses primarily on communication technologies. This
includes the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication
mediums (Christensson 2010). Add the computer and network hardware and
software, satellite systems, as well as the various services and applications
associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning. With the
rapid growth in our technology, communication now became global where you can
communicate to other people anytime or anywhere as long as you have an internet
connection and a device.
Computer is an electronic device that can accept raw data as input,
manipulate or process it to produce output. Computer system is consists of
7
hardware, software, and peopleware. Hardware refers to the tangible component of
the computer system. This can be monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, USB flash
drive, speaker, headset, microphone, or printer. Software refers to the intangible
part of the computer system. This can be the Microsoft Office Application like MS
Word, MS PowerPoint or MS Excel or other applications used to produce output.
Peopleware is the user, in which, if either one of the three components is missing,
the entire computer system will not function.
Online platform is defined as a digital service that facilitates interactions
between two or more distinct but interdependent sets of users (whether firms or
individuals) who interact through the service via the Internet (OECD 2019). ICT is
one of the online platforms in the market. Others are Collaborative platforms which
“is a category of business software that adds broad social networking capabilities to
work processes.” Assistive Media which is a component under Assistive technology
(AT), which is a generic term used to refer to a group of software or hardware devices
by which people with disabilities can access computers. Online systems are online
versions of information systems, which is “the process of and tools for storing,
managing, using, and gathering of data and communications in an organization. One
example of this is the Learning Information System (LIS) where the records of
students are stored, gathered and managed for easy process and retrieval.
Mobile Media - This refers to “media devices such as mobile phones and PDA’s
were the primary source of portable media from which we could obtain information
and communicate with one another. And leading in the market now is smart phone.
But each mobile device will not function if it does not have an Operating System in
it.
Android – powers
Samsung and
other Android
phones
Symbian OS –
powers
Samsung and
other Android
phones
Blackberry OS – powers
Samsung and other Android
phones
iOS-powers the iPhone, iPad,
and iPod Touch
Different mobile devices with its corresponding operating system.
Social Media - “are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies
to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and
pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks.”
8
Types of Social Media
Social Network - sites that allow you to connect
with other people with the same interests or
background.
Bookmarking Site - sites that allow you to store
and manage links to various websites and
resources. Most of these sites allow you to create a
tag that allows you and others to easily search or
share them.
Social News - sites that allow users to post their
own news items or links to other news sources. The
users can also comment on the post and comments
may also be ranked.
Media Sharing - sites that allow you to upload and
share media content like images, music, and video.
Most of these sites have additional social features
like liking, commenting, and having user profiles.
Microblogging - sites that focus on short updates
from the user. Those subscribed to the user will be
able to receive these updates.
Blogs and Forums - allow users to post their
content. Other users are able to comment on the
said topic.
Video conference - a live, visual connection between two or more people
residing in separate locations for the purpose of communication. At its
simplest, video conferencing provides transmission of static images and text
between two locations. At its most sophisticated, it provides transmission of
full-motion video images and high-quality audio between multiple locations
(Rouse n.d.).
9
What’s More
A. Aside from the given examples above, give at least five web applications for each
type of social media. Then examine its content.

application that is used to gather and manage this data is called __________________.
With the different online platforms, it helps a lot of people to do their tasks

disabilities like blindness can use _________________________. Those who want to grow
