Information Communications Technology (ICT) is an umbrella term that includes any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning. ICTs are often spoken of in a particular context, such as ICTs in education, health care, or libraries. The term is somewhat more common outside of the United States. It may also be defined as, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT or ICTs) are digital forms of communication including tools available on the Internet, such as blogging and email, as well as computer software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Word (Department of Education 2016). There are a lot of mobile applications in the market that are commonly used in everyday lives, most probably in communication. This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner. This module has the following parts and corresponding icons: What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you are expected to learn in the module. It also empowers the students to be literate on how to use digital tools without compromising their private information. What’s New Make a video call to your teacher. First, make sure that your calling device has already a video call app installed in it. Second, you need to have an internet access. Connection to the internet can come from Wi-Fi or cellular data. Your calling device can be a cellular phone, tablet or a computer with a front camera since you are going to make a video call. Video call app can be Facebook Messenger, Viber, Facetime, Skype, Hangout or Whatsapp. It should be the same app use by the person that you intend to call. Facetime is best for iPhones or iOS devices, unlike other video call apps that can be run in Android devices. What is It ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It focuses primarily on communication technologies. This includes the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication mediums (Christensson 2010). Add the computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning. With the rapid growth in our technology, communication now became global where you can communicate to other people anytime or anywhere as long as you have an internet connection and a device. Computer is an electronic device that can accept raw data as input, manipulate or process it to produce output. Computer system is consists of 7 hardware, software, and peopleware. Hardware refers to the tangible component of the computer system. This can be monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, USB flash drive, speaker, headset, microphone, or printer. Software refers to the intangible part of the computer system. This can be the Microsoft Office Application like MS Word, MS PowerPoint or MS Excel or other applications used to produce output. Peopleware is the user, in which, if either one of the three components is missing, the entire computer system will not function. Online platform is defined as a digital service that facilitates interactions between two or more distinct but interdependent sets of users (whether firms or individuals) who interact through the service via the Internet (OECD 2019). ICT is one of the online platforms in the market. Others are Collaborative platforms which “is a category of business software that adds broad social networking capabilities to work processes.” Assistive Media which is a component under Assistive technology (AT), which is a generic term used to refer to a group of software or hardware devices by which people with disabilities can access computers. Online systems are online versions of information systems, which is “the process of and tools for storing, managing, using, and gathering of data and communications in an organization. One example of this is the Learning Information System (LIS) where the records of students are stored, gathered and managed for easy process and retrieval. Mobile Media - This refers to “media devices such as mobile phones and PDA’s were the primary source of portable media from which we could obtain information and communicate with one another. And leading in the market now is smart phone. But each mobile device will not function if it does not have an Operating System in it. Android – powers Samsung and other Android phones Symbian OS – powers Samsung and other Android phones Blackberry OS – powers Samsung and other Android phones iOS-powers the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch Different mobile devices with its corresponding operating system. Social Media - “are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks.” 8 Types of Social Media Social Network - sites that allow you to connect with other people with the same interests or background. Bookmarking Site - sites that allow you to store and manage links to various websites and resources. Most of these sites allow you to create a tag that allows you and others to easily search or share them. Social News - sites that allow users to post their own news items or links to other news sources. The users can also comment on the post and comments may also be ranked. Media Sharing - sites that allow you to upload and share media content like images, music, and video. Most of these sites have additional social features like liking, commenting, and having user profiles. Microblogging - sites that focus on short updates from the user. Those subscribed to the user will be able to receive these updates. Blogs and Forums - allow users to post their content. Other users are able to comment on the said topic. Video conference - a live, visual connection between two or more people residing in separate locations for the purpose of communication. At its simplest, video conferencing provides transmission of static images and text between two locations. At its most sophisticated, it provides transmission of full-motion video images and high-quality audio between multiple locations (Rouse n.d.). 9 What’s More A.
