MULITIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS A fine tool of Assessment BY RAHIM DAUDANI A MCQ. A multiple-choice item consist of a problem may be stated as a direct question or an incomplete question. The list of suggested solutions may include words, numbers symbols or phrases and are called alternatives (also known as choices or options). The student is typically requested to read the stem and the list the alternatives and to select the one correct or best alternative. Answer Key and Distarctor Answer key. The correct alternative in each item is called the answer, and the remaining alternatives are called distracter (also called decoys and foils). Distractors The functions of each distractors is to distract those students who are in doubt. Distarctor Classification Incorrect alternatives options (distractors) are known as per their intended functions Suspect answer. The nearest or closest answer to the question it always confuse those student who have firm knowledge but have a dought in their minds. Danger wood. This has no concern with the element but do attract those student who know a little or not sure of the correct answer. Dead end. This is the answer of a guesser, this key always attract a guesser who try to figure out the answer with guessing the least possible answer. Stem forms The Stem is classified into two categories Direct Question Form. This is easier to write, is more natural for younger students, and is more likely to present a clearly formulated problem. Incomplete Question Form. This is more concise and if skillfully phrased, it too can present a well defined problem. And it is suitable for higher level of learners.
