KRISTINE MAY R. WAMIL BSED II B The significance of mass media in the survival of a democratic society Mass media provides the essential link between the individual and the demands of the technological society -Jacques Ellul. As Jacques Ellul quoted, Media organizations play an essential role in the survival of democratic societies. It is impossible to imagine a nation without mass communication. It provides citizens with enough information to make them aware concerning the daily accounts of the whole society. About the economic situation, political situation, weather conditions, and so on. By the use of primary sources like Television, newspapers, radio, and the Internet. It serves as the Public monitor and the disseminator of information. It also provides a public forum that reflects social diversity. Aside from providing information, it greatly influences the process of shaping opinions and perspectives and making political judgments. It also stimulates public debate and encourages the public to participate more in important decision-making. Moreover, it Exposes the abuse and arouses the public to pay attention to humanitarian reasons/injustices, establishes necessary support, and many more. Without mass media, one nation is considered as bind and disable. People cannot express their concerns, and they do not know what is happening in the country. This can lead to misunderstandings and poor relations between the government and citizens. People will become ignorant, unaware, and they will lose interest in making an important decision. Moreover, It could also lead to corruption and poor administration. In conclusion, Mass media holds a great power to rule a whole nation. Without it, one country will not survive. Therefore it must be self-ruling, objective, and independent, and at the same time, they should willingly carry social obligations.
