A part time photographer and teacher. I currently run an online platform where tutor students that are preparing for final exams. • The experiences from the 5 weeks training at the RLC, including lessons learnt about self, leadership and society. I learnt that Africa can be great again with the right leaders. I once told a friend that if all African leaders attended YALI program, we will be the best continent in the world. This program has provided the right leadership skillset after the leadership class from University of Ghana business school professors. • Why I chose my specialization track ( Entrepreneurship, Civil Society Management and Public Policy and Management I have an NGO tasked at enlightening the girl child on how to keep healthy relationship. Participation in YALI with a track on Public Policy and Management was necessary in other enhance my human management and public speaking skills. • The Impact of the training on your professional development I have a new perception about money, which fueled my new start-up after listening to the financial masterclass during YALI • A brief profile of your Mentor Joseph Ukairo is a civil servant with over fifteen years in the Public Service Sector with focus on environmental responsibility sustainability, compliance and suatainability. I am conversant with behavioural change communication modules. I am currently the Head of Public Education and Advocacy Unit of Abuja Environmental Protection Board. • The Mentoring experience It was scintillating. Every two hours was worth it. • The impact of the mentoring sessions on career and personal development I can proudly say that my public speaking has enhanced • Discuss in full details the kind of community service undertaken The community development service was targeted on educating western Africans on financial education. Financial education is not incorporated in the school curriculum, which makes institutions to churn out graduates without financial literacy. With few understanding how to grow money, the rich are getting richer and the poor are poorer. So therefore, its paramount to pioneer financial education to Africans. The program was a 3 days impactful program and the medium of instruction was whatsapp. Reason being that it doesn’t demand strong network to engage the participants. Below are the feedback gotten from the participants. • What you did and the challenges encountered I was one of the speakers in Day 1 event. The topic I lectured on was “Budgeting, Tips and challenges.” Due to covid-19, we had to resort to online platform, in other to observe federal government instructions on public gathering. On the fixed day, my country was in chaos due to “EndSars protest”, we had to reschedule to another day, thereby spending extra money on advertisement. • What I learnt – the benefit to me and society I was able to see the deficiency of financial literacy in Africa. The program consists of citizens of Burkina Faso and Nigeria. In other to give a better speech, I was able to learn more on financial education, and also got certified from Mcgill Business School in Canada. Q10: What problems did you encounter? Ans: 10% prefer speech over text, 7% said a physical venue would help better, and the rest (83%) didn't respond. I was opportune to get tutored by the best in west Africa. • Discuss the major weaknesses of the YALI leadership training, Mentorship, the organization of internship or community service. Having a group assignment comes with the burden of getting everyone onboard. During our poster presentation, it was done on the last minute, due to unavailability of some members, and time zone differences • Discuss your feelings about the value of this YALI training, mentorship, internship or community service program. The months I spent under YALI was amazing, I was able to make friends from all over West Africa. I am planning to spend my Christmas with my YALI friend in Ghana. • What things would you do to improve the YALI training, mentorship, internship or community service experience? I will encourage physical interaction to online, due to network glitches.
