Topic: Three seasons of Egyptian Calendar
The Egyptians farmers divided their year into three seasons, having four months in one season,
based on the cycles of River Nile.
1. Akhet – The Inundation Season.
 Months of Akhet
The inundation or flooding season.
July – October
 What happened during Akhet?
No farming was done during this time, as all the fields were flooded.
 What people did during Akhet?
Many farmers worked for Pharaoh, building pyramids or temples. Some of the time was
spent mending tools and looking for their animals.
2. Peret: The Growing Season
 Months of Peret
The Growing Season.
November – February
 What happened during Peret?
In November when the flood water receded, it left behind a rich, black soil. This soil was
then ploughed and seeded.
 What people did during Peret?
This was the busiest season for the people as they needed to maintain the land and all work
was done by hands or animals.
3. Shemu: The Harvest Season
 Months of Shemu
The Harvest Season.
March – June
 What happened during Shemu?
The fully grown crops had to be cut down or harvested before the Nile floods again.
 What people did during Shemu?
The farmers spent their time in cutting and gathering grains, sending the share to Pharaoh as
a tax and repair the canals ready for the next season.
