Use it as a guide when revising and editing your report. It may be used for peer-editing. Teacher Score _______ 3 Excellent, Exceptional 2 Satisfactory, Average 1 Weak Area, Needs Improvement Ideas and Content Wow! The prompt extensions for each line are clear, specific and contain rich details. The ideas are imaginative and creative. Line length is appropriate and not too brief. Overall shows thought and effort. A powerful piece. Very few specific, imaginative details. Many lines are short. Overall shows much less thought and effort than expected. Overall the content is very poor quality. Organization & Format All of the beginning prompts are included. The heading includes the author’s name, poem title and all other required information. It is typed or legibly written in ink or pencil as required by the teacher. A high quality appearance. May be creatively decorated even if not required. The details are less descriptive . It is only somewhat creative. Some lines are too short. Overall shows average thought and effort. The heading may be incomplete, one or two prompts may be missing, or a couple of parts may be hard to read. Overall the appearance is not high quality. Less effort is put into decoration if required. The voice may not sound as natural. The writing gives a weaker sense of coming from the heart. The reader feels less emotion from the writing about the topic. Several parts of the heading are missing, several beginning prompts are missing, or most may be hard to read, or it is not typed or in ink as required. Minimal or no decoration if required. No name or heading, or most of the prompts are missing, or it is completely unreadable. No decoration if required. The writer’s personality is only slightly evident. The writing is stiff, communicating much less emotion about the topic. The writer’s personality is not evident and connection to the topic is missing. Voice The voice is informal, natural and appropriate. Strongly expresses the author’s personality and feelings. It is clear that the writer cares about the topic. 0 Missing Trait or Not Handed In Word Choice Descriptive, colorful words and phrases communicate the message in an interesting way. Language that appeals to the senses and/or figurative language such as simile, alliteration or onomatopoeia may be used effectively. Adjectives and verbs are strong and interesting. Common words and phrases are avoided, but the vocabulary is not overdone. Conventions Every line is well-written and the grammar is correct, such as subject/verb agreement. Shows proofreading with no errors in spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Helps the reading flow smoothly. Any rules not followed are for effect. The language is not especially interesting, specific nor vivid, but overall it does communicate the message. It may sound awkward or words may be used inaccurately. It may be overloaded with too much higher level vocabulary to sound natural. Several errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation affect fluency, but general readability is not greatly affected. Needs closer proofreading. There is little attempt to carefully select descriptive language or the message is difficult for the reader to picture in the mind. Ordinary words are overused. There is no effort to write descriptively. Frequent mistakes in conventions make it difficult to read and understand. Needs to be edited. Severe mistakes in grammar, punctuation or spelling make it impossible to read. All lines are included. The ideas and content are related to the prompts. Specific details are added to each line. The lines flow and the meaning of each is clear. Word choice is descriptive, colorful and uses language that appeals to the senses. Figurative language such as simile may be used. The reader can visualize the ideas. Verbs and adjectives are strong and interesting. The author’s voice is natural and shows personal interest in the topic. Punctuation is used correctly (commas, capitals, end marks, apostrophes, etc.) Grammar is correct, such as subject/verb agreement, no fragments Spelling is correct Overall is a quality effort and shows thought and creativity.
