The German Institute of Research on Education of the Universities (IDRI), located at Hamburg
University, was founded in 1924 under the name Berlin Institutes for Research, the name of the
German and European research institute. This institution was to provide research and other
functions for the universities of Berlin and Munich that included the study of German and other
languages, among other subjects, as well as the study of the foundations, technology, literature and
sciences of a culture.
The Institute was founded by Jürgen Meissner, then head of Berlin's Research and Scientific Affairs
Directorate, and Wilhelm Lündy, who returned to the post in the late 1950s to replace his
predecessor who died in 1960. The latter was replaced by Robert Schatz and Herbert F. von Eustatius
in 1964. It is worth remembering that Meissner left his post as Head of the Institute in May of 1965
with the impression that he had been unable to retain most of his responsibilities. It was the
subsequent death of Schatz who led to the disappearance of the Institute head.
The German Institute of Research (RIM) began in 1923 as the second part of the American National
Institute on Education, and is responsible for the study of German literature to the present day. It
