Name:_____________________________________________ Period:______ Date:_____ Score:_______ Virtual Mitosis and Meiosis Lab NGSS Standard(s): ● HS-LS1.A Structure and Function: Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells ● HS-LS1-4 Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms. I. Introduction: When do cells make a copy and when do they create a new cell? This lab will help you understand the two types of cell division: Mitosis and Meiosis. When a parent cell makes a copy of themself and produces two identical daughter cells, this type of cell division is Mitosis. Mitosis can occur in some prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Mitosis creates a replication of a cell to replace, repair, or asexually reproduce. Similarly, during Meiosis an organism that reproduces sexually will undergo another division and switch of chromosomes to produce genetically altered daughter cells. II. Hypothesis: How would cell division alter if only Mitosis or if only Meiosis occurs? III.Virtual Mitosis and Meiosis Lab Procedures: 1. Access Cell Division: Mitosis and Meiosis virtual lab website: https://labaids.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/sgi-sims/mitosis-meiosis-sideways/index.html 2. Mitosis: use the Mitosis section of the virtual lab to complete the “You do” section of the table. 3. Meiosis: use the Meiosis section of the virtual lab to complete the “You do section of the table. 4. In small groups or the whole class, select the best description of each phase and complete the “We do” section of the table. 5. With a partner or in small groups, complete the Mitosis and Meiosis Questions and Answers table. IV. Use the Virtual lab to complete the following tables. I Do, You Do, We Do Mitosis Table: Name of Phase 1. Interphase 2. Prophase 3. Metaphase 4. Anaphase 5. Telophase I do: Image of phase You do: Description of phase We do: Class description of phase 6. Cytokinesis Mitosis and Meiosis Questions and Answers Question: 1. Number of cells produced 2. Daughter cells identical to parents cells? 3. Number of phases in each round of Mitosis Answers Meiosis Answers cell division 4. Can Crossing over occur? 5. Do chromosomes line up at the metaphase plate (equator) or the cell? V. Lab Report Create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast Mitosis and Meiosis. Use the phase bank to put the correct letter into the correct Venn Diagram location. Mitosis and Meiosis Phase Bank Human’s closest specie(s) relative shares an estimated 98.7% of our DNA. Who is/are our closest species relative?
