Sustainable development goals The sustainable development goals are the set of goals set by the general assembly of united nations in 2015. These interlinked goals were made to achieve a better and sustainable future for everyone. This assignment will try to focus on 3 major goals and what are the key initiatives taken by Punjab government and the corporate structure of Punjab to achieve these goals. Punjab’s overview on SDGs According to the Pakistan business council, 60% of the companies mention sustainable development goals in their annual reports. Out of which 70% of the companies don’t disclose their targets and strategies to achieve these goals. Punjab government also helps in attaining these goals and every year holds a summit to evaluate the performance of attainment of goals by 2030. We will follow the Pakistan report of 2019 on sustainable development goals, SDGs summit in Punjab 2018 and Pakistan business council SDGs report of 2018, to look at the respective goals and how these goals are targeted to be achieved in Punjab. Goal-13 Climate Action Pakistan has accepted the Paris agreement also is a member of Doha agreement. Still Pakistan is one the critical countries that is being affected by climate change. Pakistan government and corporate firms have taken many green initiatives to try and eliminate the climate change, which are discussed below; 10 billion tree tsunamis are a project that is now introduced in Punjab by government to reduce carbon emissions and green house effects. Many companies situated in Punjab have initiated green projects, to reduce the waste of electrical and power appliances to reduce carbon emission. Agriculture sector produces 2nd largest carbon emission in Pakistan, and many textile and sugar sectors companies like JDW Sugar Mills Ltd and many others have introduced green initiatives using green farming and manufacturing process. Companies like nestle, and many other have introduced proper disposal of garbage disposal. Government is taking green initiative to reduce plastic packaging products and convincing companies to use reusable packaging. Goal 5- Gender Equality Pakistan is a country in which women make 48.8% of the total population, while women only contribute 20% of the labour workforce. Still Pakistan’s government and corporate firms are working towards the equal opportunity for all and encourage women to be an active part in Pakistan’s economic workforce; Punjab government has launched a free help line and an app for the women to help women in trouble. Punjab government has also launched Domestic violence protection act and sexual harassment act in workforce. Companies like NESCOM, Pwc and many others have proper criteria for women recruitment and have sexual harassment policies to protect the women. Many companies and educational institutes like Fazaia colleges have launched day care facilities so women can work freely, and their children can play. Goal 2- Zero Hunger Malnutrition and food deficiency syndromes are one of the major issues in Pakistan and Punjab as a province has taken up the challenge to deal with such problems by; Exempting taxes on food fortification products. Punjab government had launched multisectoral nutrition strategies in 2018 which will complete its target by 2025. Companies like nestle and many other have launched campaigns for awareness of lack of iron in children and women. Still Pakistan is lacking behind in strategic development goals and has to work up a long way to achieve the targeted goals set by UN for 2030.
