In my opinion, we can’t evaluate beauty objectively. This is the main reason why people evaluate art subjectively. It is because our appreciation or admiration of art is largely concerned with our perception of beauty. Just like in the saying that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, one’s own perception and definition of beauty may differ from others. How we see art as beautiful does not only mean by how we see it through our naked eye. It also depends on our emotional attachment to the art and what impact the art has on us. Pragmatism or Practicalism. A thing or idea is beautiful if it satisfies a practical need or purpose to one's life. For instance, a statue is beautiful because it helps attract tourists to the area. Existentialism. A thing or idea is beautiful if it has a purpose or can give meaning in one's life. A mother, for example, saw a drawing on the fridge by her son and thought of it as beautiful because it means a lot to her. Realism. A thing or idea has an existence, meaning, purpose, and beauty that is independent of an individual's views on it. An example of this is a flower that has its own beauty that is independent from how others may see it as. Idealism. A thing or idea is beautiful only if it reaches a pre-conceived standard of beauty or perfection. A sculpture for instance is beautiful because it has the perfect proportions. Naturalism. A thing or idea is beautiful if it was already previously experienced and established to be beautiful. A sunset over the ocean is beautiful because it has always been known to be beautiful.
